It's pretty interesting to see everyones takes. Overrated / Underrated are often confused with Dislike / Like. It's still fun to hear the perspectives.
That’s because the question isn’t really translated accurately. In japanese he’s asking “what is an anime that popular but you don’t personally like?” And vice versa.
Well you have to consider their perspective: are they getting the definitions confused or is this based off the people they see/interact with overrating the anime? I’m pretty sure it’s the latter over the former.
@@budderslime67 well it would be tough to get Japanese people to answer questions like that cause it could be seen as open criticism and that's a bit taboo in Japan
I think overrated means people speak highly of it but you find it meh which usually equates to indifference or dislike. For example, the movie Everything Everywhere All At Once. It won so many Oscars but lots of people including a bunch of Japanese people find it meh. My brother even said to me after watching it on Netflix recently that it was 🗑.
Underrated means you think it's so good but it doesn't get as much recognition as it deserves. For me for example I think Takahashi Rumiko's Urusei Yatsura is her best work but it's not as well-known as Inuyasha and Ranma 1/2. Probably because it doesn't involve fighting like shounen manga. But to me the characters and gags are so creative and memorable.

Controversy is like something like "s1 Shield hero" where its released timing was really bad during the Me too era. Where they Shield hero got flack since it gives a story about a dude who is wrongfully accussed of SA". That premise made the series a point of debate.
(Here is what dictionary meaning of Controversy: disagreement, typically when prolonged, public, and heated.)
Now what is the controversy about MIA, like you even cited s1. Where that season has like relatively no controversy at all.
There was nothing that cause "diagreements or heated conflicting opinion about MIA" In short it was not a"controversial show". It's just a really dark story where most poeple agree upon.

I personally love Gintama and i think its overlooked by a lot of people. So if you like comedy give this show a try. Its considered the best in its genre. As the show goes on the jokes and overall comedy gets better and better as well as action and main story progresses.
I’m looking for the region B blu-ray of Gintama, will definitely give it a shot if I can.

Demon slayer is not famous for it's story but instead the animation quality and fight scene choreography is just top notch.

Fairy tale is kinda boring though i watched 100+ episodes....it's similar to 1 pc but 1pc is exciting and enjoyable to watch...i love 1pc btw, my no.2 fav anime...demon slayer is always my no.1

An underrated anime that I wish was licensed in the US is Major. For some reason the sequel series is (Major 2nd), but the original series and OVA aren't. There's lots of baseball anime out there, but Major is by far the best. I love how it focuses on a single character's journey from Little League all the way up to achieving his dream of becoming a player in the Major Leagues. I also like that the main character isn't always successful and has realistic setbacks such as injuries, and eligibility when he gets to the high school level of baseball.

Overrated: School Days - A decent attempt at turning a visual novel into an anime, but I never really liked the characters or story. A lot of anime fans (used to) recommend it. It's supposed to be shocking, but I can't say I cared much.
Underrated: Mushi-shi - A bit slow but great take on Japanese folklore, following a Mushi-shi (bug master?). Fairly episodic, with many beautiful scenes and stories that teach some kind of moral. (Alternative rec: Kaiba - Avant-garde, thought provoking and emotional anime.)
All-time best: Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 - A thought up story following two siblings who are caught up in a big Magnitude 8.0 earthquake in the heart of Tokyo. It's very interesting and emotional, as well as being a short and quick watch. The anime was created before the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake. (Alternative rec: Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood - Just a great story and high budget quality.)
underrated from my perspective as someone who doesn't watch that much anime: Bartender - Glass of God (a lovely slice of life about a passionate bartender and his ability to read people's emotions and make the perfect drink for them), and just because of how weird it is and the ominous, oppressive atmosphere it builds like nothing else: Serial Experiments Lain.
All time fav: Redline.
Overrated: Attack on Titan
Underrated: Record of Lodoss War
Favorite: GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka)

Black Lagoon will forever be my favorite and while it's not underrated, it's definitely ignored far too much.
Black Lagoon is a great anime, but it's violence, it's satirical tongue in cheek stereotypes and overt racism would make it tough watch for some. It also sports some of the best English dubbing tracks that one would find anywhere.

Frieza is spitting facts unfortunately. Toriyama’s DB is the best DB. It feels so plain and stale now like a cash grab. I like the color transformations but most of them came out of nowhere in DBS and we got too many in a short timespan.

I watched Plastic Memories when it was released. It's memorable but not THAT good.
s2 of jjk was a pretty big downgrade compared to s1, classic MAPPA.

Same thing with the first girl of Playing DS as Overrated for the reason that it was simplified enough to appeal to a wide demographics.

I'm not 100% sure I got the meaning of overrated, but I'll assume it's: "popular, but (IMHO) not that good".
Then it'll be "Solo Leveling", as it didn't do it for me and at some moments I thought that it's in the worst spot of cringey and boring at the same time. I prefer something like "KamiKatsu: Working for God in a Godless World" which was so bad it's good. :P
