Oh hey, that's my art of Rena and her many alts in Anamnesis you used. Star Ocean: The Second Story is my favourite game ever, Rena being my favourite character in anything ever so that picture was a labour of love. And she has another alt I have to add to that, oof.
Japan has good taste, Rena is not only my own favorite character in the series, but one of my favorite RPG female characters of all time. I was pretty sad they shut down the Star Ocean mobile game outside of Japan, I had finally managed to get Rena as my healer in it. I really hope they re-release this for the Switch like they did Star Ocean 1 in the west.
I think i only beat this 4 times. After finding out i could duplicate the level up item near the end of the game, i was so op it didn't feel right to keep going.
Man, Second Story is such a great JRPG. A lot of memories with the game, the atmosphere, the plot twists, the OST. It's insane. Since First Departure was brought to Switch & PS4 it's almost given that they'll also bring Second Story, and I hope that with a much better improvements than Second Evolution. What I need: -Upscaled graphics & performance -Naturally, remixes of cult classic tracks like Stab The Sword of Justice, KaMiKaZe, Mighty Blow & the Incarnation of Devil(to be honest, if getting a full Remake would mean new tracks than I'd rather have a remake than a remaster). - New character portraits, or at least upscaled Second Story portraits. The Second Evolution ones are so so, prefer the Second Story ones, but getting something akin to Anamnesis art style would be great, with an option to choose the old artstyle like in Second Evolution and the upcoming Langrisser remaster. -New talents and skills -Difficulty setting to ramp up the challenge(speedrunning Second Story was always fun)
Great video! I love Star Ocean 2nd Story, its my favorite RPG of all time. I never knew, that Rena is the favorite in japan, I really thought it would be Claude or Dias. :) Rena is my childhood heroine, and I simply love her. Keep up the good work!
If it makes you feel better, the Japanese manga also cuts short when they enter the portal to Energy Nede as well. I'm still working on translating the 5 drama CD's that take place after the anime. But I also feel that the CD's were just random episodes that never got made into full anime episodes. Each CD is about 60 minutes long for the story segment, followed by an interview with all of the cast members about how the story was either difficult, fun, what they enjoyed, and what they didn't enjoy. It's really neat. This series was a major influence for me to learn Japanese because I had a burning passion to know what was being said on the drama CD's lol.
One of my favorite RPGs from my childhood. This, Chrono Trigger, Grandia, and Xenogears consumed my life for a time. I considered picking up I am Sakura to kind of get that feel again, but couldn't bring myself to..sometimes you can't go back.
I never thought SO2 was that hard. Not as hard as Valkyrie Profile, but both games are easily "broken" if you lnow what you're doing. But this means the 1st playthru can be pretty tough. Great video! More Valkyrie Profile 1 videos please!
Star Ocean will always be my favorite series of all time, it has something to it that I can't quite place but that draws me in all of the time. I received a copy of Star Ocean 2 for my 7th birthday (I'm 29) and ever since I have loved the series. I just finished collecting all of the physical copies of the games too, it took me forever to track down a copy of Star Ocean 1 and Blue Sphere but now that I have them I can rest easy. This list was great too, by the way, I'm always curious to see if there is something I missed or didn't know and you did teach me new things!
I frakking love Star Ocean: The Second Story! I played it at least 10 times over, I loved everything about it! It was so detailed in what you could do, I'd get lost in all the skills combinations! Great Video!
Probably the most influential game from my Childhood, i played through it so many times. I remember getting an A+ in art class redrawring Ashton, nobody knowing where i got the inspiration for a character like that. He's still one of my favorite video game character to this day.
Star Ocean 2 is one of my favorite jrpg's of all time. The multiple protagonists, multiple worlds, the contrast of low and high tech, the sad and romantic story line, interesting towns, fun skills, and the awesome boss fights all combined to make a whole greater than the sum of its parts. Good video!
One of my favorite RPG's ever. It was the second RPG I played after FF7. I have no idea why they haven't ported Second Evolution to Switch or translated the PS4/Vita version to English.
Star Ocean 2 is the best in the series (Is what I would say if I played them all). I've played the first 3 and The Second Story is my favorite out of those though. I'm glad Erick is back with the "10 things you didn't know" series, as this and "What the heck happened" are his best.
Yeah the fight against two of the Ten Wise Men, Vesper and Decus was the hardest boss fight for me back then, followed closely behind by Indalecio himself.
Star Ocean was the first game I ever played more than twice. The replayability is awesome. Not only can you choose different characters to play as, you can choose different party members and interactions. All of which impacts the outcome of the game.
another thing about Star Ocean ex anime is that it only covers the first half of the game. It ends right when they are teleported to other world at end of tower dungeon.
You forgot to add: They came out with an Anime for Star Ocean 2 also... Star Ocean EX. they even localized it for the US... It's personally my #1 most favorite anime to date.
you forgot one extreme example of censorship in so-2: during the final battle against indalecio, he uses his special attack "divine comedy", which includes his daughter filia being sacrificed. In the japanese original, filia is actually nailed to a cross. In the western game versions, the cross was removed.
One of my favorite memory. Even though that I don't understand any story bcuz The language but i still enjoy battle system and music. I hope somedays in future I will see The second story remake or sell Again on ps4. Now I'm playing SO departure for 20 hrs. I miss it so much
Hi, I haven't watched this video yet. This is one of my favorite video games of all time, and I've never seen a video about it before. Thanks for making one, I'm genuinely glad it graced my timeline tonight. Okay, I'm gonna press play now, just wanted to say I appreciate it.
An old favorite of mine; the game is flawed, but you end up spending most of the game’s runtime playing with the good parts, making for a fun experience. This alongside Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Pokemon Red/Blue, and Legend of Dragoon were what made me fall in love with the JRPG genre, warts and all.
11: Ashton is the actual hero of light. You can see him shown in the church glass and in the opening of Star Ocean EX. In game he wears black with a blue cape in the church glass and tv show opening he is shown in white with a red cape. His weapon Holy Cross also matches the weapon held by the hero of light.
Great work! Star Ocean 2 is amazing. I am a huge fan and collector for it. Blue Sphere has been translated by fans into English btw. This is a very recent occurrence. You can find bootleg English copies on eBay and various other places (fishyfacegames). In my opinion, Star Ocean Blue Sphere is the best RPG on the GBC, hands down. Look into the Game Boy Room, where you get access to the best weapons by switching the cart to an original Game Boy. Thanks again for showing love to one of my favorite RPGs. Respect: +"80 points" in just "10 seconds."
Claude’s Killer Arts are mostly a mix of Illia and Roddix’s, so it could be that the Star Ocean 1 team stayed together. I would say secret lovechild, but Mirror Slice is directly from Phia. One theme that tends to be invoked is genetic engineering. Star Ocean 1-4 all have significant plots dealing with the aftermath, and Earth seems to be the only planet that actually can make fairly well-adjusted superhumans, as both Last Hope and Till the End of Time have them as protagonists.
This was one of my first PlayStation RPGs. I remember trying to fill in in the voice commands board fully and to beat the battle arena, I used Claude, got to the final boss over and over but never won, he was like level 100+ the rest of my team was like 80 ish.
Spell casters are the key. The final boss is fast and can cast while moving. If you use 3 spell casters and stagger out their spells, the boss won't be able to cast anything and it will stun him enough to allow for your melee character to catch him and get in some brutal attacks.
I'm not sure which game did it first, but I feel like SO2 was the first of it's kind to include crafting, item creation, and a more developed relationship system as part of the game. Also you're totally right about the game being extremely hard. Was playing the PSP universe difficulty run and am stuck halfway through Phynal >_>
this is one of my top games of all times, the game allows you to twist the story at some points, that made it so much unique , i will never forget how the characters i choose to end together started to change their behavior on some scenes until it hit that important conversation before the big battle and the scene was completely different , it made me so proud . My favorites are Rena for female and Ashton for male, making those two end together as lovers was very rewarding . If one thing this game good improve is the skill slots, different from tales, only two slots for skill (r1 l1) is too little, and you cant change it during battle . the game is brutal in the universe difficult, i had to develop a very different strategy to beat it, but with the certain people and gear, it can be very easy.
The only thing I'll give the psp credit for is the upscale and smoothing in graphics and giving the Ten Wise Men their names. But I still prefer the PS1 original. It's the game I grew up on, one of the first online communities I was a part of was dedicated to Star Ocean 2, housing a forums, fanarts page, listing for fanfics and had pages dedicated to chronicling all the private actions in the game and the multiple endings. When Star Ocean Ex came out in Japan we were all agog and you'd see new forum posts dedicated to each new episode. The psp version even took out the ability for magic to interact with other spells. Like if Rena and Celine cast a spell at the same time you can get a mixture of both spells that may boost o es effect or cancel each other out. It's the same for all spellcasters including enemies. It was one of the most interesting pieces of the original game.
I ACCIDENTALLY went through all the private actions to remove the "limiter" from Indalecio.... Which requires insane levelling up and really isnt for casual players like I was. Because of that I still have never actually finished this game.
@@indalcecio LOL I did that too. Forced me to grind my party to 99 and it was still a difficult fight. And that wasn't even in either of the harder difficulty modes (galaxy and universe).
the battles are hard (even after nerfed) because of the battle-system itself.. too much freedom lol (unlimited stunlock, crazy debuff etc.).. man, its still fun even with the challenges
As my favorite game ever released (the original anyway), I'm a huge collector and always appreciate this game getting more love. As always, love your channel too
Man I remembered the anime... it was one of the best, but, sadly... it couldn't do justice to the immense storyline and side interactions of the game. Once you get to Nede, that's where the real challenges start!
Waited and searched many years for star icean blue sphere english version....and finslly in 2020 i found a translation snd played it,at least something good came from 2020
This game was massive and took so long to properly finish. Anyone remember trying to get all the characters to say their words in order to get universe mode???
In regards to Blue Sphere being a direct sequel to Second Story, you say no other game in the series has a direct sequel. However, Second Story is literally a direct sequel to First Departure.
I am so glad it is getting the love it deserves. In 1998 when i was a dumb 12 yrar old my mind was transported away by taking home these jewel cases from kmart when rveryonr else just picked final fantasy, i took chances on star ocean, jade cocoon, legend of legaia, etc. And now almost 20 years later others can drift away to a magical place like i did at 12 to motoi sakuraba's music 🎉
I guess the difficulty drop is why they ended up making an unlimited phase for the final boss tied to a private action. This is my second favorite ps1 rpg behind Xenogears.
Also for #1 fact, if i have to guess which boss was altered, i imagine its Lucifer. He's by the far the easiest of the 10 Wise Men, much easier than many fights preceding him, even though he's hyped as the mastermind behind most of the events of the game but most of his abilities do little damage.
Great video! One of my top 2 favorite games of all time. I can replay the PlayStation version forever and never get tired of it. Thank you for answering WHY they changed the names of all the 10 wise men… and it’s so funny to hear about the alcohol drinks censorship. (I know if First departure you can have an “adult” make certain mixed drinks.)
I rented Star Ocean 2 and nearly beat it over a weekend as a teenager. I then eventually played it again years later and finally finished it. It is one of my favorite RPGs to this day. I love having sci-fi mixed with fantasy in stories. Here's hoping the next Star Ocean is great (not just good either!). Yep, I'll set my hopes high even if they end up being dashed.
The square soft an enix merger really killed this series off. Kinda odd since the merger was being done to save the jrpg. I've found that each series after the second story just kept getting worse.
I'm currently playing this on my Vita, the PSP version. I'm really enjoying it, but I wish the visuals were a bit sharper. I've been jumping from this to Xenogears, to Dragon Quest V (SNES fan translation). I need to stop doing that, because I keep getting story lines mixed up.
I've been ebay searching Vita's because I want to go back and play RPGs from my childhood.Really torn though.I own a switch but it's my only console right now.
I feel like a lot of people don't know about Anamnesis, it is a pretty good game, & looks way better than what you would expect from a phone game. Ir's too bad they shut down the Global version though.
I recently finished my run in second story on universe mode and got Indalecio limiter off and Iselia queen done after the cave of trials was finished. It was supposed to be harder?? Damn. Im going to play through second evolution just to see what this Welch hype is all about.
Good game. I had a illegal copy I bought in Venezuela and played on my modded PS1. I finally managed to get an original copy from the Netherlands, but i had to pay 70 dollars for it.
Oh hey, that's my art of Rena and her many alts in Anamnesis you used.
Star Ocean: The Second Story is my favourite game ever, Rena being my favourite character in anything ever so that picture was a labour of love. And she has another alt I have to add to that, oof.
good man

I really hope they re-release this for the Switch like they did Star Ocean 1 in the west.
Damn you actually got Rena!!? Lucky.
mobile games are trash though?
Man I had Rena, Dias, and the “SPICULE OW OW OW OW” guy
I love her , too. Rena is just awsome
Star Ocean 2 is one of the few games I beat multiple times.
Same. A lot of replay value. Loved this game.
Two times for me...
I think i only beat this 4 times. After finding out i could duplicate the level up item near the end of the game, i was so op it didn't feel right to keep going.
I can't even count the number of times I've beat this game. I still love to replay an beat this game, it just doesn't get old.
good taste. its my fave next to suikoden 2
Man, Second Story is such a great JRPG. A lot of memories with the game, the atmosphere, the plot twists, the OST. It's insane.

I never knew, that Rena is the favorite in japan, I really thought it would be Claude or Dias. :)
Rena is my childhood heroine, and I simply love her.
Keep up the good work!
Same here, even after all these years it's still my all time favorite rpg.
Indalecio limiter off on Universe is still a living nightmare .
Once you corner him with the right characters its not that hard tbh.
This is my favorite Star Ocean! I think the villains got shafted a bit as some of them were very interesting, particularly Dr. Lantis.
The way EX ended (which is basically right when disc one ends) saddened me. I would have LOVED to see them go to Nede in the anime.
same.
If it makes you feel better, the Japanese manga also cuts short when they enter the portal to Energy Nede as well. I'm still working on translating the 5 drama CD's that take place after the anime. He was so much my favourite character I stole his last name 😏👌
I always thought that when Claude would yell “ tear into pieces” I always thought he said “ pear into peaches”
ahueheuhe
My favorite RPG of all time. I wish I could forget everything about the game just so I can play it from scratch again
Also it broke my original ps1
It's fun to come back to this video knowing we are now getting Star Ocean : The Second Story R.
Good video!
A bit surprised to hear that the Blue Sphere has never released outside of Japan...That's one of my favorite titles in SO series
One of my favorite RPG's ever. It was the second RPG I played after FF7. I have no idea why they haven't ported Second Evolution to Switch or translated the PS4/Vita version to English.

Yeah the fight against two of the Ten Wise Men, Vesper and Decus was the hardest boss fight for me back then, followed closely behind by Indalecio himself.
Ah...sounds like you didn't fight the secret version of Indalecio.
EX Claude is voiced by Captain N.
If that doesn't sell you on it, I don't wanna know you.
EX also had my favourite Claude and Rena voices by far.
You forgot to add: They came out with an Anime for Star Ocean 2 also... Star Ocean EX. they even localized it for the US... It's personally my #1 most favorite anime to date.
Meh i got bored with it.
Star Ocean EX only covers the 1st half of Star Ocean 2 though I liked it.
He did mention it, though...
He did mention it. At 3:40 .
you forgot one extreme example of censorship in so-2: during the final battle against indalecio, he uses his special attack "divine comedy", which includes his daughter filia being sacrificed. This is my favorite game, thank you so much for covering this masterpiece. ❤️
a harder version of unlimited Gabriel on universe.... 0-o
I played this game nonstop when I finally got it a couple years ago. However I cannot beat the final boss to save my life. 😅
@diekbeck That was my strategy too, I just spammed moonbeam with Leon to keep interrupting him ha
Spell casters are the key. The final boss is fast and can cast while moving. If you use 3 spell casters and stagger out their spells, the boss won't be able to cast anything and it will stun him enough to allow for your melee character to catch him and get in some brutal attacks.

Wow the game has a very beautiful opening cinematic and music
I named my fuckin' bright blue Acura RSX after Rena. She's fuckin' dope.
I just found my copy of this game for PSP, thought it was gone, man i wish they would release all these game again for PS4 or switch
My favorite star ocean and i remember getting close to the end and just getting the crap kicked out of me by the bosses lol good times lol
As a kid i got stuck for a few weeks on the Fire guy in the end tower.
Replaying now. The best JRPG ever.
I can't wait for the updated video 10 things you may not know about Star Ocean The Second Story R
Rena is my favorite Star Ocean character. Also SO2 is my favorite game of all time.
If u like hard bosses amd not satisfied with the end game bosses, then try the extra dungeon that opens after u beat the game!
I hope you mention that voice acting. Pear into Peaches!
Crawd has advanced forward. 😂😂😂
Star Ocean the Last Hope is still one of my all time fav JRPS
the battles are hard (even after nerfed) because of the battle-system itself.. too much freedom lol (unlimited stunlock, crazy debuff etc.).. man, its still fun even with the challenges
As my favorite game ever released (the original anyway), I'm a huge collector and always appreciate this game getting more love. As always, love your channel too
Great video! Star Ocean needs more recognition and more sequels. SO fans, email Square Enix asking for SO6!
You were right about the rerelease, except its a full on remake 😁
Awesome job man, love this video. :D
I really hope they remaster this we updated graphics and also do the same with xenogears
Second Evo. is the best JRPG of all time(in my opinion). I really wished they’d make a new version that’d be better but that was the best.
The dragons round that guy's neck made this game awesome. Awwwww!!! They were SO cute!!!!
Man I remembered the anime... it was one of the best, but, sadly... it couldn't do justice to the immense storyline and side interactions of the game.
Once you get to Nede, that's where the real challenges start!
One of my all time favorite games. Motois soundtrack is a masterpiece.
Waited and searched many years for star icean blue sphere english version....and finslly in 2020 i found a translation snd played it,at least something good came from 2020
This game was massive and took so long to properly finish. Anyone remember trying to get all the characters to say their words in order to get universe mode???
I loved this. It was great when you got full orchestra and suddenly ended up with weapons and shields three times more powerful
tales of phantasia > star ocean 2 but they do different things well. if they combined their strengths it may very well make the best game of all time
In regards to Blue Sphere being a direct sequel to Second Story, you say no other game in the series has a direct sequel. However, Second Story is literally a direct sequel to First Departure.
I am so glad it is getting the love it deserves. I love playing RPGs. This game is my favorite RPG in the world. I been a fan since it came out. I still have my copy.
I guess the difficulty drop is why they ended up making an unlimited phase for the final boss tied to a private action. This is my second favorite ps1 rpg behind Xenogears.
You have the voice of a prophet, Second Story R is coming!

this is still my favorite star ocean of all time. i still play the ps1 version periodically.
this is the best tri-ace game. then its VP.
I miss Valkyrie Profile
I really wish they would put star ocean second story on the switch. I keep looking but so far nothing.
I rented this game when I was a kid and I was blown away. I would love to track down a copy but I need to get a working playstation first!
One of these ten had better be a rerelease date!!!
Number 11 - 18 Years later Square Enix took a big dump and named it "Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness" xD
The gameboy color sequel got a fan translation in english recently
I feel like a lot of people don't know about Anamnesis, it is a pretty good game, & looks way better than what you would expect from a phone game. Ir's too bad they shut down the Global version though.
Easily my favourite game of the series good list
I recently finished my run in second story on universe mode and got Indalecio limiter off and Iselia queen done after the cave of trials was finished. It was supposed to be harder?? Damn. Im going to play through second evolution just to see what this Welch hype is all about.
Prob my fav RPG of all time... It's real close
I'm still waiting for them to release a Second Evolution enhanced to modern consoles and PC much like they did with First Departure.
Hopefully we will get Second Story/Evolution on Switch/PS4 someday soon. Preferably an updated version with new portraits like First Departure R was
Good game. I had a illegal copy I bought in Venezuela and played on my modded PS1. I finally managed to get an original copy from the Netherlands, but i had to pay 70 dollars for it.
Ha! 5:18 your prediction was right on!
Always play Star Ocean 2 in Universe mode👍
Loved 2and story. Wish some form of it would release for the Switch
one thing I didn’t know was how much I would love the game until I started playing it.
you should've mentioned that the game also has a novelization, though I can't remember if it was written before or after the game was made
Most slept on jrpg in the states
One of my favorite JRPG games. I watched the anime before playing the game thus I knew the walkthrough.... It was great...
theres a blue sphere translation discord channel finally!
There's a repro that was released for Blue Sphere. I got it. I want to find some way to stream it.
@@Alexeon it's a full translation. So the whole thing is in English.
First tactics ogre now this? Man, it's been an awesome year for rpgs huh?
There are so many endings to this amazing game I beat this game 6 times wished I have seen all the endings
I recently found this game in my collection and have no memory of ever buying or playing it. Reckon I'll have to do something about that.
100 FUCKING ENDINGS! That blows my mind.
