I didn't find the Japanese politics confusing at all. The Taiko dies, he has a too-young kid he wants to succeed him, appoints a 5-man powerful Regency until the kid is old enough. The Regents don't like each other and are jockeying for power and influence. Why is that too hard for people to follow?
I don’t think the hierarchy is supposed to be clear bc your seeing things from John blackthorns pov and he still doesn’t understand who everyone is and the customs
I like how he had an outburst of believable cross-cultural outrage instead of just pretending to be crazy.
