Hundreds of thousands of guns are stolen each year because people don't store them safely, and most of them end up being used in violent crimes since they are virtually untraceable.
The laws could easily be made useful by requiring locks to undergo a test before approval, an actual test and not just asking the janitor to open the lock with a handful of mashed potatoes and pocket lint.

@@leetri there is absolutely something foolish with ensuring a gun is secured in a hard case in a vehicle that can just as easily by stolen to be destructively opened later. When it comes to theft, any of these types of gun cases provide no protection from being stolen other than concealing the gun while making it obvious something of value is inside. Sure, it might require the thief to go home or to his car before he gets access so he can't immediately use the firearm that very minute. So maybe it buys you a few minutes or an hour. That still does not have any significant effect on the problem of guns being stolen to be used later, like in the vast majority of cases.
There are a few similar types of cases that do also have a wire you can secure to something in the car. That at least would help a bit as the thief has to take an extra step and needs an extra tool.
I'm all for safe gun storage at home to keep children out. But to prevent theft is shaky at best unless you are talking about at home storage in an expensive safe.
Locked gun box requirement in cars are laws because they make people feel good, not because they are effective at preventing theft. Any laws that are designed to make people feel safe while effectively doing nothing other than adding barriers to legal activity are silly in my opinion.
