First of all he should have named that video "The AMERICAN man's guide to Colombia" or whatever. Not all Black men travel for this, so its offensive to me too that we he lumps us all in together.
Colombia is one of the countries i want to travel to in order to gauge South American interest in tourism to Africa. I'd prefer it if people didn't assume I was there to find women to pay for sex
That's a great point mate! I never thought about that before many black men (yourself included) made that exact comment. The video title itself actually makes black men look bad as it assumes all black men travel to pay for sex. It definitely affects respectable travelers like yourself, as when you get to countries like Colombia you get stereotyped. But don't worry mate, once you start speaking and let the locals know you're not like that it'll be fine 👍🏾 PS calling it "American man's guide" is also offensive since most Americans don't travel for that reason either lol maybe just "sex tourist's guide" 😂
I am African American and i realized that folks who made the Blackman’s guide to Cartagena get paid from CZcams views and numbers. So they thought maybe making a video of something different to get views. At the same time these CZcamsrs are not being mindful of the negative image they portraying of both their racial group and the women.

umm how about the single mans guide funny thing is when I was in Cartagena yes there were girls standing around etc but how often was I approached hmm maybe 6 times on my first trip where other places I have been to you are CONSTANTLY approached by prostitutes'

I have business in Medellin and live a good part of the year. Joel, doing this public service, you should not be overly sensitive... You absolutely have nothing to apologize for! I am an American and walking the streets I see other Americans (most of them are older guys BLACKS AND WHITES) they are loud, drunk usually, disrespectful to the locals (girls included) and I feel disgusted and ashamed by their behavior. My guess, these are people who don't feel privileged in the US and in Medellin they feel like kings vs. locals.
Remember, we all are guests here and should respect the locals just as we would expect foreigners to behave in our countries!

I am an African-American who just returned from an awesome week in Medellin. I am seriously considering relocating to Colombia after I retire next year. I saw the video where you made your comments that some deemed offensive and I previously watched the “Black Man’s Guide…” video that you called out. While I did not and do not think you are racist, I observed and felt in real-time that your comments seemed to imply that black men with passports are the reason that Medellin has gone downhill with prostitutes lining the streets of Calle 10 and the clubs at Parque Lleras. I assure you that Medellin has had longstanding economic problems that drive their women to prostitution and those issues long preceded black men visiting. I think that’s the thing to which people are reacting but what do I know.

I'm African American, travel, live in the DR with my family and speak Spanish. Everytime I got to Colombia it's for business or family vacation. Even though all types of people are sex tourist, we should all be honest. Some of the newer travelers are making it out in the open and have no class to do what they do behind closed doors. It's sad because when I travel as a black man, I get lumped into that unless I'm with my family because of the reputation guys have created for themselves. You're not racist at all man. I am a black woman in the U.S. from Texas. You have nothing to apologize for. I have been to Cartagena at the walled city. I have seen who goes and picks up prostitutes. And it’s not your fault they are all over the internet promoting sex tourism. Is that all black men? No but It’s enough to where people are noticing and they are being very loud about it. People have eyes to see and observe when something is being done loud and proud. That doesn’t make you a racist.

Joel I'm black and I love Colombia and let me tell you that I share your sentiment. I'm in fact against sex tourism and prostitution en general. I personally believe that it does no good for ANY society and colour has nothing to do with it. It's low level and I really hope that the government bands it, that the ladies can find a way to make money without it and that the men can get their act together and start forming healthier relationships with women where this is not the only way to deal with them.

Colombian escorts make double what Colombian doctors make, that's the problem. The Colombian government literally setup redlight district zones to support the sex trade in their country.......that's the problem.
Yeah Colombians have realised that they mishandled the whole situation, which is why I made the initial video explaining that they're now barricading Parque Lleras and trying to move the sex workers away from the major touristic areas of the city - because it's just a bad look for the city as a whole.

I think the key point is that when you go down the road of public judgement of a group of people that aren't doing anything illegal like you did, you open yourself up to be judged back fairly or unfairly. Some people would say that you being judged a racist is just as valid as you judging that the old man you saw with what you claim to be an underage girl. You kinda reap what you sow in this life.
Sleeping with underage women is definitely illegal - there's also a huge problem with that in Colombia. Just do a quick Google search and you'll find many articles on it.

I actually get dirty looks from them,because I look White. Little do they know that my kids are half black. Colombia is where I plan to retire. I just arrived back in Texas from visiting the Quindio region. Hopefully you can make a video of Filandia and Salento. It's beautiful there. Please do a video of Bioparque Ukumari in Pereira. I have yet to see one video in English. It's a great place to spend the day.

Black American, former military and Federal criminal investigator whose lived and traveled overseas since the early 80's. Now retired and living in Portugal. I'm not offended. I understand the sentiment behind the recently-coined "Passport Bro" mindset/movement/lifestyle. Yet, there is a fair amount of "tricking" mixed in with...or under the guise of....traveling to find a wife or exploring.

I agree, however I actually feel sorry for some Passport Bros - because some of them legitimately may not like dating in the US, so they travel to foreign countries to find women there to form a relationship with. However, now they're getting lumped into the same group as guys who have no interest in dating at all, they just travel to countries where they can buy cheap prostitutes.

@AKJoel I've met many men of india culture in Colombia. I find that they ask us about our travel experience to "check" the temperature of the culture in the given country. Because our skin in similar in color. I'm never offended when they ask me how I'm treated
Anyone who travels understands that the way other countries treat black people is the same as they'd treat anyone with dark skin. Only in the US does "black" just refer to African Americans.
Keep doing what you're doing on the channel, I have never thought that you were a racist in any way and I am black. Yes, there are many very beautiful women in Colombia, but not every dude is into the whole S*x tourist stuff, when I found your channel it was refreshing to get more information about Colombia that wasn't related to the whole S*x tourism world like many other YT channels. I don't judge anybody for doing what they want to do on their vacations or trips, but I personally enjoy getting more information about a country that I want to visit, like where to stay, how to conduct yourself around the locals, which areas are safe to visit...etc. Basically, keep doing what you are doing (thumbs up from me).

There’s ways to talk about it without putting yourself above them; using words like creeps weirdos etc.
Use Where’s Wes as an example. He did the exact same thing. He criticized a lot of people in the same way you did and preached how him getting married was the right thing to do and what should be done. Well, he got divorced and his wife’s family put death threats against him, he’s going through legal battles, he had to take down a chunk of his CZcams channel and ultimately he got chased out of Colombia after “doing the right thing.” I don’t wish that on anyone but it’s a cautionary tale.

There are a bunch of vids of guys that just go to these countries just to have sex with a Colombian woman , Thai women and women from the Philippines same with China and Japan , Russia , Sweden , Brazil and some other countries .......you can tell just by how they act around a women and especially the questions that they ask that he's just there for 1 thing and basically showing other men that they can do the same , most of the guys are treating those places as a go to place to hook up , it's no wonder why the men from those countries are pissed that guys "tourist" are using the women for sex especially impregnating them then leave to never see the women again
Granted I know that it takes 2 , so both sides are making the women look bad and the men that go to these countries are making most men get a bad rep before they even get a chance to go to these places

Yeah it's good that the local government has realized that it's destroying the city and finally taking measures to combat it - hopefully they can clean it up and at least send it to an area away from all the normal people lol
But the whole "Passport Bros" movement was a big thing on YT for a while, in fact that's how I initially learned about Colombia and traveling there. Thankfully, the algorithm seems to have course corrected because I don't see that content as much anymore.

I’m about the same colour as you (maybe a bit lighter due to lack of a tan lol) since parents are of mixed Caribbean descent. I didn’t see anything wrong with anything that you said. Certainly nothing that could be construed as racism.
I will make one comment though. Over the past 5-10 years I’ve noticed more and more “people of colour” posting videos about what it’s like to travel as a black/darker person… as if they’re LOOKING for racism from Caucasian people. I don’t get the obsession with it. And it saddens me to think that someone could cross a country off their list because of the perceptions of an entirely different person with a different attitude and upbringing. I’ve been traveling for over 20 years and been to almost 40 countries… from mostly black to mostly white… and never experienced any racism of any kind (to my knowledge). There are good people and bad people where ever you go. That will never change. While it’s true that some people will stare if your look is “outside of the norm” that doesn’t mean that they don’t like you… they’re just curious. At that point YOU have the power to show them what you’re all about and leave them with a good memory… just like they have the power as a local to leave you with a good (or bad) impression of their country.
Don’t be afraid to get out of your comfort zone. Best way to learn and grow.

When AA men decide to make truckloads of videos exactly like this, people will believe they are exactly like this. They talk about women like pieces of meat, while they themselves are no oil painting, plus fellow AA do not call them out on it.
I wouldn't worry about it. It was the title of the CZcams video. That is an easy and overplayed card. I honestly think a CZcamsr needs to do a video of who is hanging out in Parque Lleras. Then go to the rooftop bars and film who is throwing money at girls to dance on tables and harassing people who are not their color until they leave. Just because they don't like the truth, doesn't make it wrong.

Why apologize when it's your observation of what's going on in Medellín. With the exception of a few CZcams content that talks about Colombia and it's culture, the majority are talking about sex and how to get a Colombia baddie.

That's true Tony - that's a major reason I started my channel - as except for 2 or 3 channels everyone else was talking about prostitutes and doing "walking tours" which actually just pointed the camera at the tits and ass of unwilling women (some underage.) It was such a toxic market which didn't reflect Medellin or Colombia at all, so I wanted to change the perception of the country. And yes, exactly as you said the guys that come here only to pay for sex ruin it for the rest of us and give us a bad name amongst Colombians.

There are many channels I've seen with white bros and some black bros discussing prices of hoes. I don't really care as long as they're not doing anything illegal. I like what the city is trying to do. I believe prostitution needs to be legal as this way you can have more control over it. On the same note, it shouldn't be out on the main roads and in family areas.

As a Southern white man I have fought this my whole life when I fought against racism my whole life and raised 4 non racist kids. People look at me and make a judgement as they are lazy and use stereotypes. It's extremely hurtful how easily some people throw the term around like they are telling you to try a new hair color. Words matter like my parents taught me, and once its out of your mouth you can't just take it back. America has become largely judgemental, click bait, and lazy!

My main reason for making this video was to show that I didn't mean any offense to black people - the only reason I referenced the video "black man's guide to Colombia" is that it was the first one that popped up in the search history when I searched "being black in Colombia."
I often search this when travelling to a new country I'm unfamiliar with, as how the locals treat black people is often how they'll treat me, because if you haven't noticed I have the same color skin as many black Americans.
Also if you noticed I also put 3 thumbnails of sex tourism videos before I even mentioned "black man's guide to Colombia" and one of them even showed a guy who's not black.
All that said, I still stand by my fact that I don't support sex tourism - which is the same sentiment shared by most locals AND the Colombian government.

First off, you dont come across as racist but you should remember the country where your folks come from has some serious racial issues. They have had the caste system for ages even though may be there is progress being made now regarding equality. So without knowing you, people may judge what you say through lenses connected to India and not Australia per see even though Australia has its own history too.
I have worked with Indians in corporate as well as government and lived around them and its safe to say majority do not like mixing with other races. Why that is so I have never cared to know. I have a friend who works in technology from Pune and is in the US pretty often and one day I will visit since I have met his wife and kids on video chat. The last thing i found kind of funny is how you said you look at how blacks are viewed or treated in a country prior to visiting. Why do you not search for how Indians are treated . Whats your thought process, like if blacks are not treated well then you dont go, I dont get it. In my view, your mistake was in editing out the part as to how you had found that video, searching for content on traveling as a person of color in Colombia. When you deleted that part of your video, you should have deleted the reference to race, which no longer had any place in the video which was focused on sex tourism. Insensitive comments dealing with race can appropriately be called racist, even when not intended as such, particularly if they reinforce the racist perspectives that persist in our society. Hopefully you agree with this point, although it was not expressed at all clearly in this defensive video.

Dude, it's just the guys (white, black, yellow, purple, etc.) who roam down there looking for sex. And as I said before, a bunch of them were probably influenced by and bought into the webcam fantasy that Colombia is an adult Disneyland on steroids. Only solution at this point is implementing the Amsterdam model (meaning recognized red-light districts), but even that might be impractical given the heavy duty Catholicism that's part and parcel of Colombia in general. Anyway, met my girlfriend down there five years ago when I was assigned to the embassy in Bogota and I still get down there at least three times each year to see her - and yup, I'm 20 years older than she is, so yeah, every time we go out we occasionally get those disapproving glances from some folks who presume, you guessed it, that I'm a transient sexpat hanging out with my selected honeypot for the night. At this point we just shrug our shoulders and deal with it.

I don't think you are racist but I think you can be more nuanced in how you pass judgment on the channel on things you feel strongly about and can sometimes alienate a certain group of people watching. I am not a P4P person and I really do not like Medellin at all (I have spent 4 months in Cali this year and I absolutely love it) and did not think of racism at all when I watched the video but there have been instances where you were very black and white about certain things that could have rubbed people the wrong way (not related to race). As a Black man from the United States, I came across that same disgusting video. What makes it worse is that the content creator has a name that is very similar to mine. I came across that video after doing some searches online to see if there was some sort of Racism towards Black people prior to visiting Colombia. I specifically looked for racism towards Black men since my own country is notoriously threatened by us, which leads to police brutality and other forms of firearm violence towards us. Additionally, the Black American culture is depicted very similar to Colombian's in regards to gang violence, drugs, guns, danger, and uncontrollable sex. Ironically, the only reason I know about Pablo Escobar is because of 90's Rap music. The rapper Nas from New York City literally used to call himself Escobar.
So before I went to Colombia, I came across the "Black Man's Guide to Colombia" video thinking he was going to talk about the aforementioned issues and how we don't have to deal with that in Colombia. After watching the video, I couldn't have been more furious with that guy. I made it a point to never watch his content again, until I randomly came across a video of him going to Tijuana. The entire video was of him trying to get a camera in a brothel. He was complaining about the cartel members confiscating his camera, following him around, and overall giving him a hard time.
Simply put, if there was a way I could get people like him off the internet, I would do that in a heartbeat. It's because of him that I felt like I had to make an assertive effort to prove to Paisa that I wasn't there for sex tourism.
