How to Clean Disc Brake Pads and Rotors - STOP BRAKE SQUEAKING!

  • Here's the technique I use to clean squeaking disc brake pads and rotors when they are contaminated.
    3 things you need: disc brake cleaner, a clean rag and some very fine grit sand paper or wet and dry paper.
    -Remove the wheel then the pads.
    -On one pad at a time closely spray disc brake cleaner onto the pad to loosen the dirt and oil.
    -Wipe the freshly sprayed pad back and forth on a clean rag to remove the dirt that you've loosened.
    -Spray and wipe the pad again until the amount of dirt being wiped on the rag is minimal.
    -Put the wet and dry/sand paper on a flat surface and rub the pad gently in a circular motion to remove some material and bring out the fresh layer underneath.
    -Wipe away the dust on a clean section of the rag.
    -Thoroughly spray both sides of the rotor with disc brake cleaner then wipe dry with a clean rag to remove the dirt and oil. Repeat this process until the area of the rag used to wipe the rotor shows no signs of dirt.
    -Re-install the pads and wheel and check the caliper alignment.
    -Bed the freshly cleaned pads and rotor back in by performing several stops on the road....cycle at speed and brake to allow the bike to slow to walking pace.

    9/10 video as it shows all the steps, but NOT how it sounded AFTER the fix. I too have a bicycle with a baby elephant screaming in agony when I apply the breaks - just as in the intro of this video - but I would have liked to have heard proof that it actually did anything.
    WIll try this later today and I am quite confident that it will do "something" - atleast untill I get a set of new pads in the mail.

      Well. What to say?
      I did the brake-job and started with the rear and I was amazed by how well it worked. It was quite a mouse and spurred on by this success I did the front. Assembled everythng and tok it for a short ride aaaaand... it howls like a baby elephant beaten around the trunk with a screaming banshee.
      The old brakepads where horrible before I cleaned them, but after brake cleaner and sanding them on 800 grit wet/dry paper using alcohol they looked like new. Cleaned the rotors and there was no more black that came off of them and they felt like they were new.
      So, what gives?
      What I hear is one thing, but when it howls you can also feel the whole bicycle vibrating between the legs so is this some clue to what else this could be? Rotors seems to run true and the pads are really gripping and biting into them and the stopping power is really really good.
      Any ideas?

      @@GoingShirtlesshi im not sure how bikes work entirely, but maybe your break isn’t centered so when the wheel is attached it may be grinding on one side. As far as how to adjust it, i have no clue. But thats something i saw in another video’s comments as I need to do some maintenance myself. Also hope you figured it out otherwise in this 9 months, but if not please feel free to share what it was cause i have the same problem.

      @@GoingShirtless So you're saying it worked really well for brake performance, but they've gotten load AF? Did it go away with time?

    • @GoingShirtless
      @GoingShirtless Před měsícem

      @@RadoHudran Sadly no,. They brakes are grabby as hell but they are stil quite annoyingly loud. It is hard to pinpoint the source of the noise as they do sound different now and I feel this is more a vibration than the actuall pads making the noise.
      I wonder if there could be something done in the way of decoupling the calipers from the frame by adding a rubber o-ring or just a piece of old innertyre tubing fashioned to be a spacer of sorts.

      what does that mean "bed the pads"?

    • @geomango20
      @geomango20 Před 2 lety +6

      @@ernis.e kinda like "breaking in" the pads. You gotta get up to speed about 20+ kmh and then slowly pull on the brakes so that initial layer of brake pads wear off and kinda get used to the rotor surface. It's very important because down the line you'll get uneven braking. I've been there just a few weeks ago. Dont rush in cleaning your brake pads and rotors!

    Don't spray so much. One short spray is plenty enough. You need to clean it mechanically afterwards anyways and many brake cleaners are toxic.
