I'd say keeping expectations low opens up the potential for surprise. I had no idea Boracay, the premier tourist island in the Phils, would be so fun but it was when I first went there in 2007. I've been there over 100 times since and still love to go. Thailand was a more acquired taste for as I first went there in 2001, but it's gotten exponentially better since as perhaps the best SE Asian country to visit.

how do you fund your travels?
I was laid off last summer and got a nice severance package. I also have some savings and investments. I will probably eventually need to go back and work for a few years before I move abroad permanently.
