I have had the fortune of seeing these guys perform live many times. The first being in 1967. I have found that their songs can evoke emotional experiences. Sometimes the perfection of harmonies, the strength of individual vocals, the instruments combined with beautiful voices, can bring memories and feelings rushing to the mind. I too have shed a tear listening to the musical memories of my youth.

Phil Spector produced "You;ve Lost that Loving Feeling," but this record was produced by Bill Medley after a falling out woith Spector. Medley was able to sucessfuly imitate the Wall of Sound. Unchained melody was written by a 16 year old boy in the 1950’s. Somehow it fell upon the ears of some Hollywood producer and it was part of the movie score of a grade B movie. A couple years later it was picked up by a vocal group in the early 1960’s becoming a hit.

If you had heard these wonderful songs before they would not inspire such a feeling of wonder in you now that you can have a true appreciation of what you are hearing. You are now on a journey through the rabbit holes of musical time and there are so many real treats and a wonderful variety of music ahead. You are now hooked and there is no way out. I listened to songs like these when they came out and when I was in the New Zealand Army, and some even became like anthems. My joy in and appreciation for this music has been reawakened by young people like you and that is a real blessing to me and many others. You are right, we are meeting across space and time, most likely never to meet, and yet we are becoming family and love is growing between all of us, and these wonderful talented people, many of whom are no longer with us, are the catalyst. The immortal power of God and pure talent is at work. If you don't mind I would like to suggest you react to a song called "Hurt" by Johnny Cash. What I find interesting is, in the 1920s and 1930s, music was one of the first venues to integrate blacks and whites. The bands/singers went for talent, not skin color, and great music was produced. Of course, the government stepped in and put a stop to it for a while, but the artists broke out of that again.

I may be wrong, but I believe that both "Soul and Inspiration" and "You've Lost that Lovin' Feelin'" were written by a husband-wife team of Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. I believe that Phil Spector was also credited with writing "You've Lost that Lovin' Feelin'". I understand that "Heart and Soul" was in pre-production with the Righteous Brothers learning the song when the songwriters had a falling out with producer Phil Spector. Because of that, "Soul and Inspiration" was no longer available for production. Some time after that, the Righteous Brothers and Phil Spector parted ways. The Righteous Brothers then approached Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil about obtaining the rights to sing "Soul and Inspiration." They were told "We have something better." That something better was "You've Lost that Lovin' Feelin'". After "Lovin' Feelin'" was produced rights were granted for the Brothers to sing "Soul and Inspiration". According to the internet, Cynthia Weil is still alive. Both she and Bill Medley are 82. Barry Mann is 83.
I am going by memory for most of this. All the details may not be accurate.

As good as this was, it pales in comparison to the studio version. Phil Spector had been their producer just prior to them leaving his label when they joined Verve Records, a division of MGM, for this release. Bill Medley produced this song, and he did his level best to reproduce the same Phil Spector "Wall of Sound" technique that Spector was known for, and which helped to shape the Righteous Brothers' sound. (Spector, incidentally, just died last week at the age of 81.)
Anyway, with or without Phil Spector at the controls of this song, it had many of the same production characteristics of the records he produced of the Righteous Brothers when they were on Philles Records. And none of that sound can really be captured in live performances such as the one seen and heard here in this video where the Righteous Brothers were singing along with the live orchestra that was on hand for NBC-TV's "The Dean Martin Show." A nice performance, and one of the rare Righteous Brothers mid-1960s performances captured in color. But to really judge this song, you need to hear the studio release.
The song, incidentally, was written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, the same songwriting duo that penned their classic "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" and their follow-up to it, "Just Once In My Life." That songwriting duo was quite prolific, and is worth a Wikipedia search to see just how many hit songs they composed.

Phil Spector didn’t produce this. This was a live performance on The Dean Martin Show. (You ought to do some of Dino’s songs.). The studio version wasn’t produced by Spector either. They had left his record label and Bill Medley (the deep voiced Righteous Brother) produced it for Verve Records (a division of MGM). He did a great job of replicating the Spector wall of sound. But it’s not there on this live performance with Dean Martin’s house band.
You need to hear their breakthrough hit, “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’.” (Look for the black and white video where they’re in silhouette at the start.). It was the #1 most played record on American radio in the 20th century. And for good reason. An all-time classic. It’s the song they sang at their 2003 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
You should watch s movie called The Wrecking Crew (free on CZcams). It’s about the L.A. session musicians that played on about a gazillion hit songs in the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s. They were the band on all the Righteous Brothers records (as well as many, many other artists, both solo and group). You’ll be blown away by all the songs they played on. Check it out.

Harri, like a lot of reactors you choose too many live versions, but in most cases like here, they are usually inferior . The studio version gets the full Spector echo chamber and wall of sound treatment. and kills this one. How would Unchained Melody sound if the two of them sung it together? Honestly, I don't think it would have worked. Do a little search and you can find Bill Medley singing Unchained Melody in his live show in Las Vegas where he has partnered up with a guy named Bucky who sings Bobby Hatfield's parts. Bill does a solo treatment of Unchained Melody as a tribute to Bobby, who died in 2003. It is an entirely different song when Bill sings it. Not bad, just different. Here: czcams.com/video/iV6H0oOCM2Q/video.html
Incidentally, the Righteous Brothers were not the first to record Unchained Melody. It was written for a movie named "Unchained" that was released in 1955. According to IMDb, the movie is about "a convict in a medium-security prison (who) is torn between his need to finish his sentence and (to) get back to his wife and family and his desire to escape the confines of prison." So now the lyrics of "Unchained Melody" make a bit more sense, huh? During calendar 1955, fully FOUR different versions of Unchained Melody appeared on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, including one instrumental version. Perhaps the best remembered versions from that year are the ones by Al Hibbler and Roy Hamilton. There's even an interesting video on CZcams that sort of traces the history of Unchained Melody that includes snippets from most all of the various versions that have charted. Check out the history of the song here: czcams.com/video/LrquswYcwV0/video.html
But it was ten years later in 1965 when Bobby Hatfield made the song his own in a way no one ever had before and no one has since. As for why Bobby sang it without Bill, well, Bill kind of explains it here in this clip, which contains what happened just before and just after the clip you've seen before of Bobby singing the song. czcams.com/video/m0EBs6uRgtw/video.html

Bill Medley produced the song. I don't think they ever did Unchained Melody together. I did how find this version with Bill Medley singing Unchained Melody czcams.com/video/56qWAAV8f_4/video.html . After listening to it, I think if they would have sung it together it would have been great.

      Amazing that he produced this

@@HarriBestReactions Yes I also hear him say that he produced Unchained Melody because Spector didn't want to take time with a B-side, but then it was credited to Spector.

Yeah - just heard about Phil... what an amazing producer.. but also what a bizarre and controlling personality... Ronnie had to climb over a fence to escape (lol) - and he threatened John Lennon with a gun ... and all kinds of stories... I do believe he deserved to be in jail.. for the killing of Lana Clarkson... it's hard to separate admiration for talent ... I think Phil was musical genius... from what you learn... also, a creepy, awful, murderer... so... umm... IDK

He wasnt ok though..i dont think he killed her or did those awful things on purpose. It was the drugs and i think he could have been bipolar as well

@@HarriBestReactions Yeah - he was not okay..and had not been for most of his adult life, as far as I've heard.... but his musical genius allowed him to get by with outrageous behavior -- and of course, to afford drugs, drink, and whatever other forms of excess... Ronnie is the ultimate survivor... that girl is still singing -- and she is awesome... (met her about 20 years ago and she was the sweetest thing!) -- RIP Phil...

Bonnie and Clyde were a male/female duo of criminals who went on a crime spree, how does that relate to the Righteous Brothers? lol

Your comments brought me back to the movie Spinal Tap! 😂😎🔥🔥🔥🔥 I did not like this arrangement of this tune. The band was over powering, it sounds like the brought the tempo up for time purposes of television. It you see the other appearance of this tune. I think it was Hullabaloo. You will understand what I am saying! Oh yeah...their masterpiece is: you lost that loving feeling!

The black and white version on Hullabaloo is way better than this. The instruments in this are too prominent.
