Pretty much, the entire galaxy is screwed without R2.
Yet Lucas once said, "Jar Jar is the key to all of this."
***** Yeah, and also I heard somewhere that he indirectly caused the rise of the Galactic Empire by giving Palpatine emergency powers or something, I have to check.
***** I wasn't trying to link the theory and Lucas' quote together, though it's such a coincidence that he said that......
+sgtfrozty George Lucas also said that he had "big plans for a specific character", and since he said "Jar Jar is the key to all of this", we can assume that he had big plans for Jar Jar. He allegedly halted the "big plans" because of the Prequels getting so much (unnecessary) hatred. The "Darth Jar Jar" theory makes so much sense and I'm hoping that JJ Abrams continues Lucas' plans.

I love how R2 is part of the Star Wars family. He's more of a Skywalker than Rey. He was Padme's, then Leia's, then Luke's. He loved Padme so much and loved being on Anakins side. In the new era, he loves Luke and Leia. What an awesome droid!
No he was Padmes then Anakin's then Leia's then Luke R2 was a droid who loved action which is probably why he blew off Padme and Leia for Anakin and Luke
R2 is the most helpful droid but BB8 is the cutest droid lol they both are the best droids. and R2 is still pretty cute.

This is exactly what I tell all my friends when the subject of Star Wars comes up. Without this little guy everyone dies. Definitely the very most important character in the franchise, and the kicker is he's never portrayed as getting fully recognized by the other characters for saving their skins.
Caracajou I 100% agree. It's sad that R2 barley gets any appreciation from the other characters. They really should recognize how important R2 really is.
because he is also selfless, he doesnt look for ay medals or recognition, he is the real hero that we all need, but not the hero we diserve.
In episode 1 they kind of honor him for saving the ship, which comes off a little strange. He is a machine built to fix starships, after all.
Interestingly in legends he lives well past everyone and tells their story to one of the Whills

Such an iconic robot. Promising, comforting bleeps and noises. Blue, white and silver, all calming colors. He's just an overall brilliant robot that you just can't hate.
It's impossible to not smile when he's on-screen.
It's amazing how a little droid who just strolls, turns his head and bleeps and whistle can convey so much emotion
R2 is a hacker in every sense of the word. He's cleaver and witty. He pushes the boundaries in things that are inherently limited. Hands down most under rated character
I love how R2 D2 has been from the first episode to episode 9 without being reset, if someone breaks into his memory he could find treasures of the old republic, the empire, the CIS, and muh other things.

A truly interesting flavour of character, voiceless yet not without back and forth dialogue. Cool calm and collected yet will burn some battle droids or buzzsaw thier way of a situation if need be. R2 is a genuinely original chracter.

The way R2 whistles when he falls off Jabba's sail barge kills me every time 😂
Does have a certain "Geronimo!" or "YOLO!" or "Whoohoo!" vibe to it.
It's sort of a carefree whistle like "Here goes nothing.". It's interesting how much detail is put into his beeps and whistles to convey what he is thinking.
R2 is actually quite observant of the battle and knows when to get off the sail barge without being told by Luke.

Tyler Pickup aka Starpool Well there was a comic that explained why the other droid at the begining of episode 4 broke when uncle Owen wanted to buy it. It felt the force teling him to break, and earlier escape from Jabba. So droids can feel force and maybe even use it

R2D2 is the true hero of Star Wars but no one gives him credit for. He's the x-factor in every star wars film from Anakin to Rey. He transcends Disney and Lucasfilms as the real hero.
