    D2 is a type of steel used in knives. It was pretty awesome when it first came out. It's now cheap enough to be found in many Chinese knives, and it does make for a pretty good blade. It trades stainlessness for edge performance, so don't leave it wet. It's up to you whether you trust the manufacturer that it's actually D2.

    • @alphadawg81
      @alphadawg81 Před 11 měsíci +2

      It doesn't matter what kind of steel it is if it's not heat treated properly. And that's the problem with the cheap Chinese knives.
      Additionally, D2 isn't stainless a pretty brittle. That's why the only bubble D2 blades have a thick blade stock. ...but that still doesn't help the fragile tip.

      @@alphadawg81 So maybe i should do a torture test on these knives? Put them in a vice, use a weight tool to pressure them, or maybe into my press? See what it takes before they give out to test actual strength?

    Knife 2 for sure. Also, a little advice from a long time high end knife collector…you should do the paper test slowly to get a better idea of what the edge is doing as far as edge geometry and sharpness are concerned. Take care and keep up the great work!!!

    About that Gerber knife, Temu does ship from legitimate brands in the USA. They do also have their "home base" in the USA as well. Yes they are owned by a Chinese Company but they have some real winning items.

      I'd wager Temu has very few U.S. brands though. I also doubt Temu stocks the legit product as well, especially concerning knives. Any knifemaker worth their salt will not be selling their knives on Temu, Gerber included. I guarantee Temu is not an authorized Gerber retailer. If you see anything from Kershaw, Benchmade, Hogue, Microtech, Spyderco, Buck, Zero Tolerance, etc, for such a cheap price it is highly likely to be a counterfeit/fake.
      Temu is the last place you should be buying knives. Sure it's nice to save money and get stuff for cheap, but I'd rather have the real thing even if it means I have to spend more money to get it. As a collector/enthusiast of pocket knives, it really gets my goat seeing fakes for sale on these Chinese storefronts. I want the legit stuff and this crap devalues the real McCoy.

      Hello I recieved the knife recently and have to say it's really worth the price. It's small enough to carry and would be perfect for a outdoor use or as knife for the kitchen. The weight feels good in hand and it seems well balanced, the pattern etched on the blade looks great and even the sheath smells like real leather! The finish on the handle is a bit rough on one side by the blade but in no way detracts from the overall appearace and functionality of the blade. For the price I got this (around $15 US) I have to say it's really worth it. Sorry this was rather long winded.

    I Love those old Camillus TL-29 electrician knives. I got one from my grandpa, who was an electrician for over 40 years, and I carry it on a regular basis. I 'm not an electrician myself, but the scraper blade, wire strippers, and flathead screwdriver really comes in handy. I've had times where I've needed to strip a battery cable, scrape adhesive off of something, or tighten loose screws and it really helped. That knife you got from temu isn't an electrician's knife. It ain't shit compared to a TL-29.

    maybe 1/4 to 1/3 of an inch and without pulling lay the knife flat to the wood. if the tip breaks off or bends that means bad metal or heat treating , if the tip survives that mean a good quality knife

    you need to do the paper test after the wood testing, or get some rope and cut the rope about 20 times with each knife then do the paper test to see how the edge retention is. you can sharpen a fruit rollup to the point of slicing a paper, but its not going to do it more than a few times which is the important part.

    The pen-shaped knife is not thin. It is 4mm thick, only the top is sanded. The gray color shows that it is made of high-carbon steel.
    I spent almost 3 hours sharpening its top with a diamond sharpener. Steel is really hard. The handle is made of rosewood.
    The knife, which reminded you of a karambit, makes very thin cuts on the skin of the finger, but very nasty ones. The blood won't stop flowing. He is very dangerous.
    What does the best knives mean?
    You have chosen 3 knives for completely different uses. You can only use the tanto type for combat.
    The one with the blue handle is a hunting knife, slightly modeled on a kukri.
    The downward-curved handle increases the impact force when dividing game and facilitates cutting with the front part of the blade.

    It's probably a mix of metal's and would break easily if clamped and tested in a vise. D2 is nice for work knives imo and I doubt some of those are D2 steel. Not saying they all aren't but I'm betting some aren't. Now D2 is commonly a tool steel and is pretty solid like I said for a knife you don't mind using and beating on. But yeah I'd bet these are mostly all mixed random metal's and probably not hardened properly either.

    • @DustinLikesJiujitsu
      @DustinLikesJiujitsu Před 10 měsíci

      No real reason to fake D2. It's pretty cheap steel as is. Heat treatment maybe questionable but I'd say the steel is D2.
      When you get into more exotic steels, m390, cruwear etc that's when I'd question it.
      I have a masalong and ganzo both in legit D2. Fit and finish on the masalong is subpar but all ganzos slap for the price.

    The interesting thing about these top 3 picks is that they've all been discontinued. I'd suggest that is because they are counterfeit knives. Dubious Chinese companies will produce copies of well-known knives, using cheaper materials, including 'pot' steel, steel used to make cooking pots, but labeled as higher-end steel. That type of pot steel can't be properly heat-treated and will go blunt almost immediately, and be very hard to get a sharp edge. Not because the steel is hard, but because it is too soft.
    I have a genuine Gerber Strongarm (like the copy in your video), and it was about USD80. It is a tough, sharp, all-rounder that is a great tool.
    I would suggest that these knives might be fine to have around to 'show off', but they won't be practical for any real use.
    With respect to which one I think is the best value, I'd pick No2. It has a minimalist aesthetic, and looks expensive. Plus, you can't beat the price.
    Cheers from Australia.
