The song is very important in our cultural history; Ottoman Empire used the "Hijri calendar" till it collapsed. The song's name is "Hey Onbeşli" means "Hey fifteener" which describes the soldiers who were fought in ww1 and were born in 1315 conscripted 18 years olds according to the "Hijri calendar" .
most of them were 14-15 years old.

the strange guitar is called "microtonal guitar " which lets a player to play both semi tones and micro tones. It's patented by the player in the vido himself. He got a tedx talk about it.
This is an old Turkish folk song with a lot of emotional melodies and lyrics telling a war time story of the Turkish nation passing through a stressful era in its history with a lot of hardships and suffering that took place during the World War One (WWI). The battles of Gallipoli were fought against the allied forces essembled to break down the unity of Ottoman Empire. The song starts with an opening verse&chorus singing "Hey onbeşli, onbeşli - Tokat yolları taşlı - Hey Onbeşli, onbeşli - Tokat yolları taşlı - Onbeşliler gidiyor - Kızların gözü yaşlı - Aslan yarim kız senini adın Hediye...", which would be very hard to translate into English without loosing the meaning but roughly translating as "Hey! fifteen born, fifteen born - Roads of Tokat (the city) are stony - Hey! fifteen born, fifteen born - Roads of Tokat (the city) are stony - Boys (who were) born fiffteen are set to go (to war) - Girls are in deep sorrow with their teary eyes - She, my lioness beloved, is the girl whom I call by the name Hediye...". So the picking of the name "Hediye" has a special emphasis here because it means "gift" or "present" in Turkish. This I think implies that all the girls would be left behind when their teenager fiancees/husbands died fighting the war eventually. Hence these girls left behind would be like a present (memento) from their deceased. Now the bottom line behind these lyrics is that the Ottoman State authority had to start enlisting young teenagers who were born in 1315 Islamic calendar (Gregorian 1899) and older because casualty was so high that most older adults apparently died off at the war already and the Ottoman State fell short of troops to fight the war at frontlines of Gallipoli. So the WWI was so devistating for the Turkish nation. That is so deep brother! Every time I get to listen to this song I can hardly prevent myself from crying. It sounds so emotional to me and tear drops start falling down from my eyes. The song has a slow pace with a bit of bluesy vibe to it. I hope this small briefing would help you better grasp the feeling behind this tune. I know there is more to the lyrics to translate but it would take up too much space as the opening verse&chorus tells us much about the whole meaning already.
Thanks for your reyaction Bridget and Rey. I appreciate what you are doing for us.
Stay safe!
Adamlar bizim müzikleri dinledikçe hayatları boyunca neleri kaçırdıklarının farkına varıyorlar içlerinden boşa yaşadık götü kaşıdık dediklerine yemin edebilirim ama kanıtlayamam 😂😂😂
That guitar that you blown away by is a special one made by the artist who uses it. Its Frets changed to Komas which is special to the turkish makam. And if im not wrong, it is the only guitar which is built that way.
Yes and i think at the begining his little son created this guitar with legos
The 8 string guitar you saw was designed by him (Tolgahan Çoğulu) in 2008. He named it "microtonal guitar"
Didgeridon't 😂😂 we have the same sense of humor Bridget ! 😍
we miss you both welcome back again 🎶👍
The guitar that you saw is called microtonal guitar designed by Tolgahan Cogulu who is the player as well. You can react his covers like "Yine mi Cicek" or his duets like "Boomerang" with Sinan Ayyildiz, a baglama player, or "Kurdilihicazkar Saz Semai" with oud. You will love the instrument :)
Çok güzel. Aslında çok hüzünlü bir türkü. Savasta ölen 15 yaşındaki çocuklar icin yazılmış.😢👏👌
Paul Dwyer reactions are necessary. That Scottish guy sings Turkish songs like no other. Go to his channel, sort by most popular, pick one, doesnt matter which because I am sure you will want to watch every single one over a few months!

We truly love Paul Dwyer. I am not kidding. We always say he should be a state sponsored artist, which is an official endorsement in Turkey.
You guys are so cute together
Rey is right it is the didgeridoo the guy is playing (2:43). The didgeridoo (also spelt didjeridu, among other variants) is a wind instrument, played with continuously vibrating lips to produce a continuous drone while using a special breathing technique called circular breathing. The didgeridoo was developed by Aboriginal peoples of northern Australia at least 1,500 years ago, and is now in use around the world, though still most strongly associated with Indigenous Australian music (Wikipedia definition).
This song is about the young Turkish soldiers who have to fight in WW1. I think we see didgeridoo (native Australian instrument) because of remembrance of the Anzac soldiers who died at this war too
Thats Erkan Ogur at the beginning playing on fretless guitar. A big big big Jazz Musician.

This person developed the frets of the guitar. Because the guitar is insufficient for Turkish folk music. So the guitar doesn't produce the sounds we want. I'm sending you the video of this person introducing this guitar: The aim of this person is to reduce the difference between our traditional musical instrument, the "bağlama" and the guitar. The music in the video belongs to the famous minstrel Âşık Veysel (Kara Toprak).
czcams.com/video/Gq9cokFwWpI/video.html&ab_channel=TEDxTalks
In fact, he wanted to go beyond the limits of the notes. It's not just about binding. This is a topic that was also discussed during the Ottoman Empire. Western and Eastern music. Turkish music does not fully comply with western notes. There are music that fits, there are music that do not fit, there are giants.

So please react to one of those Azerbaijani songs named as "Qarabağ üçün oxu 2 - Tut Ağacı and Aman Aman Ayrılıq" at czcams.com/video/lJ97GmKcQKs/video.html.
