As a 3D animator who animated characters playing piano, I can say that it's absolutely common that the character doesn't play the song correctly. Animation is thought to be appealing at camera, and depending on the camera angle, if he played the song as it is, maybe the arms and hands wouldn't be composition wise correct. It's animated following the song beats so it seems like he's playing it, it's not like the animator doesn't give a s**t haha

Animation isn’t often about realism (though there is an appeal to realism too!), it’s about what looks artistically best to the camera. The animators are given a thumbnail/storyboard to catch the feel of, and if they moved the camera to show the right hand playing the Correct notes in one of the early shots, the feeling of the shot and camera angle would have changed. It’s about art, not correct hand placement - though I do love these videos a lot!

As someone with nearly 12 years of musical experience under my belt, it just has to look right, it doesnt have to _be_ right. Just like how when you are playing specific piece, it doesn't have to _be_ right it just has to _sound_ right. And this accomplishes that pretty well I'd say. Without stopping and going frame by frame, there pretty much is no way you'd know it was wrong unless you are both an expert pianist and you have perfect pitch, and even then it's probably not on screen long enough or shown at the right angle to catch any of that, especially not on your first viewing.

Tom was literally playing correctly and it was a fully animated piano, it had the best angles it could have, and it was fantastic, it even got an Oscar. Whether is it appealing or not to the camera angles, Illumination should've putted some more effort on making that scene a bit more believable, nonetheless of that sole fact that 3D animation is tougher than 2D animation, you can still put some effort on making it realistic enough knowing very well this is a goddamn musical animated movie.

Guys just keep in mind that they are trying to capture the expressions of the character, the actions of his hands, and leave enough room for the stage lights in the background all while staying true to perspective. If his hand were to move any further, they would have to back the "camera" up to include everything, thus messing up the whole composition and making it look awkward and unnatural. This shot alone has so many elements that animators need to account for and there's just no way they could make everything true to life. In the end, they made the right decision to cut least important one as not to disrupt the essence of the scene. Hardly anyone will notice that the keys don't perfectly match the notes, but EVERYONE will notice if the perspective is warped. So just lend them a little leeway, animation is hard.

It's just one of those fascinating insights and thought-descisions that really bring out the magic of the illusion they work hard to bring together. I find it really interesting

since a lot of comments dont understand why this happens:
Animators have to follow the storyboard, so that it doesnt ruin the composition that the director has already planned for during that stage. Especially in a shot like this, where perspective plays a very big role, if the hand is dragged too far away from the camera, it will ruin the initial composition, and will make the shot looks too complex and awkward. So it's the director's decision to either be realistic, or focus on visual composition. There's no right or wrong answer.
But this not always the case. Like the Gru's shot. I doubt following the actual notes will destroy composition. Other than saving animating time, they might be facing technical issues like the pose might be impossible for Gru's proportion to do, or the cloth simulation could go wonky if Gru's doing certain stuff. We never know.

ty, the majority of comments on both this video (and others similar to it) just needlessly-shit on the animators for in-the-name of realism, wo ever taking time to consider just how complex and tricky animation is. at the end-of-the day, animation is an artform used as a vehicle for storytelling and artistic-expression, and animators shouldnt have to compromise their work for the sake of realism. there are many pieces-of-media that *do* go out of their way to animate instruments correctly (likely at-the-expense of lots of time, money and energy) and we should be spending-time celebrating those works, as-opposed to tearing-down others over smn as nit-picky as this (not to say this is what the creators of these videos are inherently doing, but rather the people in the comments)

    • @ckwi2245
      @ckwi2245 Před 2 lety +8

@@_kaleido Honestly, I think the problem might've actually been the shoulders/armpits. Considering Johnny has exceptionally broad shoulders for a standard size piano moving them too far in or out can easily cause issues or simply his shoulders would make the playing in the proper spot look really cramped, like elbows tucked into the ribs to get both hands in the right spot on the piano.
On the other hand, I don't think his fingers clipping into the keys would be too much of an issue, but his hands and fingers being proportionally longer, and his thumb seeming to be proportionally shorter may cause some issues with how they are supposed to be used on a human hand.
So more they opted to make the character appearing to play properly, rather than the instrument being played in the right spot. Could very well be a combination of both as well. Still considering he's roughly playing the same piece from his end is better than the random slamming and finger wiggling that somehow comes out a concerto.
Edit: Just looked up some images of Johnny, if you see the still during Sing 2's dance practice, at one point he has his palm up and fingers relatively straight, his thumb doesn't even make it to the base knuckle, where a human's thumb makes to almost the first knuckle out. This alone makes it impossible to for him to use his thumbs properly to play while angling his forearms towards his sternum, which would be required to keep his elbows off his ribs and get his hands into the proper keys. To get his thumbs where they need to be, he would basically have to chicken wing his wrists, which I highly doubt you could find a pianist that could actually play like that.

All of this points to it being very likely that they 100% did this intentionally, they fully well knew how the song was meant to be played and maybe they even animated it accordingly originally but later in the making progress they just decided to change the position of the hands in order to better fit the camera angles that the director wanted. People be acting like this is just another case of animators "not bothering with the details" and while I think that in itself isn't as big a problem as people are making it out to be I also think that it's not even the case here

I don’t think people are understanding how long a scene like this takes to make. Sure, they could’ve animated it right, but I’m not going to be expecting a professional animator to also be skilled at reading sheet music. At least it’s on the right area of the piano! No one is paying attention to notes unless it’s for a video like this- in which it’s for fun. It takes wayyyy too long to make it accurate- and although it would be super cool if it were- it’s incredibly impractical.
I play piano and animate (neither professionally though) and I can say that I wouldn’t have made it match properly either because no child cares enough to pause it and study and compare each note with it’s real note, and that’s the target audience. It just isn’t made for composers.
as long as it’s convincing then no need to worry about revising animations for another three months for this one scene.

The person you were replying to did not even share your superficial sentiments, he has a nuanced perspective about why little details like realistic piano keys are almost never implemented. Many animators couldn't change the scene even if they knew they could animate right/better and wanted to do a better composition. What the story boarder plans is what goes, and if the animation director doesn't care about such a detail then that's that.

It really isn’t about complete accuracy when it comes to movies.
Even one clean outline (without any colors or clean line art) for 1 minute takes 4 hours to skribble. It‘s extremely difficult and most animators sit days on one little scene and it still looks alright in my opinion.
And the hands could look so much less appealing. You have to think about what LOOKS the best on screen, because everything has to be adjusted for the medium it is shown in.
Like you have to write a book differently than a screenplay, because the one is visually and the other one has to awake the emotions through imagination.
There are also so many movies where the characters are played by actors, where many moves are just wrong. Cars wouldn’t explode like it‘s shown and you can‘t brake someone else’s neck, like they show it on screen, but it looks better and so on is the better choice for the medium it‘s set in.

Still filmstudios make a hand drawn scratch most of the time with a few hundred pictures to decide what to put in a scene etc.
And to program a character, you need a few character designs, probably hand drawn, to know where it has to go, when you animate them (like typical face-expressions etc.).
Still I get the point, that it probably is another process to animate it then when drawn by hand, so this scene itself could have been doable in the right way. (I hope my english is understandable, I sometimes mash up the grammar with that of other languages)
