Testing out 11 different quilt ruler grip products was an intense video to plan and to film, but I'm so glad I did! Many times, other quilters ask me about the best grip product for rulers, and I have no idea what to tell them! Now, after testing out an extensive variety of different grip products, I can definitively say which is my favorite.
Rather than testing all the quilt ruler grip products, and then only sharing my favorite, I take you through all my tests in real time in this video. You can see the same experiments, and may have a different result.

Thanks for the comparison! Well done! I do wish you had shown how they perform on fabric, since that's how they will be used.
Hi Beryl! Great point! I still have all these rulers with the grippy still on them... maybe a follow-up video is in my future. 🥰
Yes, I agree. Use of fabric would be great!
Oh and maybe a long ruler-24”. Those are the ones that always slip on me.
Hi Carolina, I’ve usually used InvisiGrip on my rulers.
I'd never used it before - now I'm a fan! 🥰
Very interesting! Thanks for doing this 'study' of all those products! I also enjoyed hearing your assessment of the whole grippy vs slightly grippy topic. I thought I would always want grippy but you made a good point about wanting grip when you want it, but not otherwise. I'm an engineer by trade so appreciate the scientific nature of your tests. 😊 Great experimenting video!
What’s the point of putting it on a mat, without fabric?/ the whole idea is on fabric to be non slip.
I have used the Guidelines Grip Strips and found that they tend to fall off the rulers after a short time, which was disappointing. Found this video very informative. Thanks!
Good to know! I'm not using these for any extended amount of time, so that's not data I would have without your input! 🥰
@@CarolinaMoore I found the same thing. They tend to start ungripping at the ends and when you stick them back down they don't stay put for long. I even tried trimming them down...and down, and down, to get more life out of them before ripping them off and trashing the lot of them.
@@meacadwell oh no! Thanks for the feedback. 🥰
My two favorites are Quilter's Select and Creative Grids. It works for me.
Thank you for doing this!
Love that you found what works for you! 🥰
I appreciate that you did this, I learned about some products I didn't even know existed. I do wonder though why you didn't compare performance on fabric since that's all that really matters. Not sure how to apply your observations on other surfaces.
I understand. I didn't have a fabric application in mind for these rulers. And for me, the clarity on the Glow rulers is what drove me to do the video. 🥰
Thanks for the comparison. I love the Invisaline product for my rulers! It grips on fabrics nicely & when you cut on a fold the fabric cuts nice & straight with no wonky curve in the fabrics, great product Invisaline. I need to your Glow ruler!
Glad to hear that others like it, too! ❤️
I've used several of these, but the one that has worked the best for me is the Handi Grip strips. A little rougher to the fingertips than the silicone feeling ones, but well worth it for how it performs. I use it on both my cutting rulers and my quilting rulers. Highly recommend it!
Love that you found a solution that works best for you!! 🥰
Thanks for doing this I have the spray and just bought the invisigrip but haven't used either yet! Invisigrip ❤
About a month ago I purchased some grippy kind of dots at Joann's. I don't remember the brand and I already threw the packaging away. They are about 3/8 to 1/2 inch wide clear cirlcles and they are a little thick. I put them on my 6 x 24 quilt ruler and my 9.5 in square. I HATE THEM! They move my fabric off my grid lines before I even get to cut. It drives me absolutely nuts! Takes 3x as long to measure and cut with them on, but if I don't, then my ruler moves as I'm cutting- so its a toss up on what is more aggrivating. I think there is definately a sweet spot when it comes to how much grip is enough but not too much. Your video made me very interested in the invisigrip you tried last! When I buy my new Carolina Moore 24 inch glow ruler this summer, I'll be sure to get some! 😉
The thickest of all the materials I tried was the strips on the edges. The thinnest was the spray... so there are lots of options. I will have to do a follow up video where I try all these on fabric. I'm going to need to come up with a project where it makes sense for me to cut fabric with these sized rulers... 🤔
@@CarolinaMoore Maybe it's time to trim up scraps using these rulers?
Would have been interesting to have an added experiment; using each ruler and cutting material.
I've used the center or donut holes on smaller rulers. Works great
Yes! That's a perfect use! ❤️
I really wish you would have shown these using some fabric. I’ve used a couple of these products and the difference with fabric is important and the level that it might cause the ruler to be lifted off the fabric before cutting is also important.
I've not used many grippy products in the past, so this was new to me ... I still have all these rulers, so I'll be working on a follow-up video with fabric. 🥰
Love the comparisons. Who knew it would be such a gripping video to watch.... oi... I know... I had to.
Bwahahaha!! I LOVE puns! Well done! ❤️
I know this is not traditional but i found cheep medical tape with a cores on the top works GREAT. and can remove completely. Ps i am saving up for a light up ruler i love that idea for my mom with eye problems. Thanks for reading my comment😊
A couple people have mentioned thia... I'm going to have to look into it when I do a part 2 video... 🥰
And thanks for your comment! Folks like you stopping to leave a comment does SO much to help my videos be seen, and grow this little channel. 🥰
Thanks for your scientific demo. Not of caution: on some rulers, alcohol may remove the markings on your rulers. Ask me how I know!
Oh no!! That is no good at all! 😭
I've used the Odif 404 spray on my rulers that shift on me. It works great,
Yay!! I love that there are so many great solutions out there, so we can each pick our favorite! Every one of these 11 solutions worked as a ruler gripper. Which is part of why I showed the process for all of them, instead of trying them off camera and then doing a short video sharing my favorite. I want each quilter to have as much information as possible to pick their own favorite. 🥰
I would like to see how they work cutting on top of fabric, what do you think about using them cutting some fabric? To me that would be a really good test. I would trust you to do it off camera and just tell me the results. I would even send you a yard of fabric to cut up if you wanted me to. I am 70 and I just don't have the hand strength I did when I was younger to hold the ruler in place. Currently my only option seems to be using a hand weight on the end of a long ruler when cutting longer peices of material. I also now wear a glove on the hand holding the ruler incase I slip while cutting! I just couldn't afford a big cut. I even wear the ones for the kitchen when using a gradder or mandolin when slicing. I do appreciate you doing this video, It must have been very expensive for you but for this test it seams they were all the same as far as not slipping.
I do plan to do an update on fabric. I have a relationship with Art Gallery Fwbrics, so I have no shortage of fabric - though it was very kind of you to offer.
Have you looked into the Sew Tites cutting mat? I did a review video, but honestly, it didn't do the ruler and mat justice. Much easier to use than I show in the video. And rhe magnets help to hold down the fabric, reducing wrist and hand strain. The only downside is that it is expensive.
Love love grippy! We use it at our shop!
🥰🥰🥰
The invigrip pulled off my lines and numbers when I tried to remove it. Ruined my ruler😢.
Oh wow! Really? How long was it on the ruler, and what kind of ruler was it? I'm so intrigued!
Great job.
Thank you!! It was a LOT of work, but I think it is so useful to see someone try all the different products. 🥰
I use invis grip and it is not necessay to cover the entire ruler. Depending on the size of the ruler I just add 2 strips (that way you are not covering the hole). I was surprised on how long it stays on which is a long time.
Interesting! I was just following the instructions on each product (if there were any) and not doing any further research... but I was really impressed by the invisigrip!
Right. Should be tried on fabric.
That all will work on a flat surface with fabric, hello?
Thanks!
Wow!! Thank you. 😊
I'd be concerned that those sandpaper strips could potentially scratch the cutting mats or remove the marking from them as well as harming the rulers.
When I first started sewing eons ago, I used Fiskars rulers because of the price. As I gained experience I did what so many of us do and started trying different brands...meaning I now own way too many rulers and none of them really worked best. Then I came across QuiltCut Ultragrid rulers. They're made in the USA and have this unique ability to cling to the fabric so I don't really need the products from this video anymore. Some fabrics are "more slickery" than others (I sew quilts, bags, and garments) so I'll put an antique sad iron as a weight on the ruler to help out for that.
Do you think any of these products would work on template plastic? Thanks.
My invisigrip pealed up after only one day so it wouldn't slide on the fabric any longer.
How easy to position it accurately and what keeps it's grip.
Would like to see the difference with the tape rolls as well.
It is looking like I may need to do a followup... Which tape rolls?
I think a better "slide" test would have been to use the rulers on fabric and see if they move
Totally understand! I still have all the rulers, with their grippy on them... I just need to come up with a reason I'd be using these to cut fabric... probably squaring up a bunch of HSTs? Need to get sewing...
Will it damage your fabrics?
Great question! None of these are sticky enough or sharp enough that I'd worry about damage to my fabric. 🥰
Thank you hope to see you again at Camarillo Quilting Association. Camarillo California. Want to buy all your lighting rulers. Take care love all you you do.
🥰🥰🥰
I wonder if Hugo tape would work, hmmm??
Oh... interesting... I might have some of that around here somewhere?
Interesting, but a better demo would have been showing how it works on fabric.
