First Look: Netgear Nighthawk M6 & M6 Pro - New Flagship 5G Mobile Hotspots for AT&T

  • AT&T and Netgear have released two new flagship 5G mobile hotspots - the Netgear Nighthawk M6 MR6110 and Nighthawk M6 Pro MR6500.
    Both hotspots are the first to come to market featuring the Qualcomm X65 & X62 modem chipsets - enabling some significant future-proofing improvements over the X55 modem that has been used in all 5G hotspots and routers to date.
    But while the Nighthawk M6 seems to be limited in some key ways, the Nighthawk M6 Pro paves new ground with new technologies like Wi-Fi 6E and 2.5 Gbps Ethernet.

    I'm a tower climber an att has been rolling on new site builds South of Dallas and att has the most band width ive seen between every carrier. Near cities Verizon will max out at 5 band widths. Att runs 8 or 9.. it's a pain to work on but.. BUTT.. I expect att to be one of the first mobile internet to go unlimited when they have a structured mainframe to handle the data of internet use like home internet.

    Just looked up your video because I was looking into the M6 pro after netgear offered to sell me an unlocked one for $999. The weird requirement to remove the battery and plug into wall power might be related to this entry I found in the user manual:
    "FCC regulations restrict the operation of this device in the 5.925-7.125 GHz band to indoor use only.
    6 GHz is available only when the device is powered by AC adapter connected to AC mains.
    The device cannot be used outdoors on 6 GHz, as required by FCC/IC rules."
    Apparently, by law, they can't let you just go anywhere pumping out 6GHz signals.

    • @MobileInternetResourceCenter
      @MobileInternetResourceCenter  Před 11 měsíci +4

      Indeed - 6 GHz has restrictions that make it tricky to legally use outdoors. Pretending that power outlets only exist indoors may be a way for the M6 to take the easy route to comply with the rules.

    I spent hours researching different data plans that could allow for more data usage, and after a phone call to a local att retailer, I found that there is an unlimited plan available if your account is set up as a business/commercial account for around $70/month. I do have my own business, however, the process for opening up a business account was not difficult and didn't require more than a social security #. I suspect anyone could do this regardless if they have their own business or not... hope this helps someone!

    It should be noted that there are actually 3 versions of this Netgear M6 Nighthawk hotspot, MR6110 (the base), MR6500 (AT&T Pro), and MR6400 (Dish, not rev'd here but is also "Pro" equiv)... and some regional sub-models that no one should touch. The functional difference between these models are the bands they connect to, the MR6400 is far and away the best version because it connects to more bands excluding mmW which is about as useful as the WIFI 6E is, it isn't. The MR6400, however, is only available thru Dish in selected cities with Dish 5G (not satellite) plan. My mother is in rural Ohio with very poor internet options available at her address, still testing but best option I've evaluated for her yet. Additionally, the MR6400 will work fine on AT&T or T-Mobile networks, just have to buy through Dish though device is unlocked.

    Netgear M6 seemed ideal product. I kept waiting for it to come back in stock. Even went to a few AT&T stores hoping to find one. No dice, nobody has seen these in months. I suspect Netgear would wave vaguely at "supply chain issues". I have given up and picked up a T-Mobile KVD21 which has no data cap for a good price. I don't like KVD21 bulk, nor denial of external antenna ports but it delivers in spades on high speed data.

The MR1100 we have is “just ok” sensitive on B12 and B14 and even less on B5. iPhone 13 gets several dB more signal, all things being equal. Worse, it suffers from de-sensitation: literally where we are on the Blue Ridge Parkway right now, with directional antennas I can get -86dBm RSRP and -10dB RSRQ, normally plenty for a magnificent connection, but 500kbps is all there is to be had, and it’s not the throttling.

    I have an M6 pro on the first net unlimited plan worked for months then suddenly started locking up several times a day. The device is rated to be connected to 32 devices I’m at about 20 and it worked fine for months. I am now on my third M6 and they are telling me it’s locking up because I’ve got too many things connected to it but nothing has changed. So, I have the model that you referred to in the graphic at the beginning, the Nighthawk MR1100 with AT&T. I have a "grandfathered" AT&T plan that I purchased in May 2018. I bought this model after watching your April 2018 video that announced that hotspots purchased before that date in early May 2018 would get the grandfathered AT&T plan. This hotspot and plan have served me SOOOO well over the past 4+ years giving me (for all intents and purchases) true unlimited, unthrottled cellular Internet.
    I called AT&T regarding this upgrade and they would NOT let me keep my grandfathered data plan. Are you saying that based upon your information I CAN get one of these new Nighthawks and keep my grandfathered plan but just ask AT&T to "not provision" the device for 5g? This would give me better LTE than my Nighthawk MR1100 (and better WiFi)? Then would I just use it as a 4G/LTE device with the hope that someday I could have them "turn-on" 5G if they allow me to keep my other plan?
