As an F1 visa student on Optional Practical Training (OPT), from the start date shown on your EAD card, you cannot accrue more than 90 cumulative days of unemployment during the 12 month OPT duration. For the STEM OPT extension, you are limited to 150 cumulative days of unemployment including any periods of unemployment during the initial 12 months of OPT.
Many F1 international students fail to stop this unemployment clock from ticking because of a poor understanding of the optional practical training (OPT) system.

USCIS Update: Due to the effects of the pandemic on the US job market, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) currently allows F1 students to maintain their OPT even if they work less than the minimum 20 hours per week requirement. Nevertheless, this modification is subject to change at any time in the future (www.uscis.gov/working-in-the-...)

Yup!
Hi! Great information in your video. I have 57 days left on my OPT but have a job offer to start mid May which means if i stay it will be more than 90 days. My question is, can i leave USA only to come back for that job like a week before? Again thank you for your time.
while being employed by an university, I know they updated my SEVIS info. If I get a contract job or even start a business, how do I report those changes to the USCIS?
Under contract jobs does your employer provide a W-2 to file for taxes? like say a tutoring platform where you get paid hourly? with that F1 visa you'd still have to pay for insurance and retirement plans on your own? I know these stuff were deducted and filed by my university when I was a GTA.
Thank you for sharing! I have two questions. Question 1, I put opt start date as July 8,2021on the application. And I have not get opt application status update until now. When would the unemployment day start? Question 2, if I never get a job until the 90 unemployment days, do I still have 60 grade period after that? Thank you!
Not until you've received the EAD and start date has been reached. Check this video out: czcams.com/video/LKRX4Smbg0M/video.html
You said that people with STEM background can only work as a full time employee under either 1 or several employers. But then you searched for electrical engineering jobs as contractor, which is a STEM degree. Am I missing something?
Those examples are for OPT not STEM OPT. You're right that electrical engineering is a STEM degree. A job as a 1099 independent contractor does not qualify for the STEM OPT Extension, as there has to be a direct employer-employee relationship (a W2 employment).
Hi, I am a data science master's graduate and currently struggling with a job hunt and on F1 OPT. Would doing online paid tasks at Appen cover OPT?
Keep at it Jongwon! Job hunting is not always easy.
@@SojourningScholar I found a volunteer work and it is keeping my visa status
Nothing's gonna work. The job market is very corrupt. Only recommendations work. That shouldn't be the case.
@@jongwonjohnleehey jong, im in the same position aswell. id like to know about that volunteer position can we talk sometime when you are free?
Hi I’m on first OPT and failed to report employer information to my school. It is more than 90 days now, but I have proof from my employer that I worked for them. I have pay stubs, W2, Bank statements, offer letter and experience letter for proofs. Could you please let me know what can I do? Should I leave the country?
I'll recommend you speak with an experienced immigration attorney for the best advice on your personal case. OPT students are required to report employment in order to be compliant.
Ok. Thank you so much.
