      @@GASilverHunter I always wondered, why if its money for money, is it legal for them to say no? It’s a legal tender after all. Can they refuse to take your dumps?

    • @GASilverHunter
      @GASilverHunter  Před 2 lety +8

      I don’t know if legally they can. I have never had anyone say no. I have gotten a lot of dirty looks. I have been asked not to bring back halves to the same bank I got them from by the bank manager before. Legally they probably have to take them back.

    • @RedShiftedDollar
      @RedShiftedDollar Před rokem +5

      @@Kaouix They can legally say no because coins are not legal tender. Rather they are lawful money. There is a subtle distinction there which basically means that you can use coins as a legally sound way to settle debt and pay for purchases, but either the buyer or the seller reserve the right to refuse to accept or use them. Bills on the other hand are legal tender. This means that if you wish to settle a debt using bills, the recipient must accept them. If you are a seller who only accepts cash, the buyer must pay in cash and the seller is legally protected in their insistence on only using physical currency. This only applies to debt settlement.

    Great information for us new coin roll hunters! I have found some success when striking out on a box of quarters is to ask the teller if I can buy 10 rolls - They seem to be willing to do that and then I go to another member branch and do the same! So after 5-6 banks I have my $500 in quarters! 👍 New Subscriber! Happy hunting!

    Thanks for the advice. I just started coin roll hunting, and I ran into resistance from various branches. I filled out a survey Fifth Third bank sent to my email, and I mentioned problems obtaining these rolls. The next day, I got a call from my local branch, and I had a nice conversation with the branch manager. She explained to me exactly what was going on with the coin shortage. She answered all my questions, and she offered to allow me to order boxes when their limitations are lifted. I was completely honest, and I promised not to be a hassle.

    Very good information. I work as security at a bank. The bank I work at is in a tourist area. Most who live within a few mile radius of the branch are wealthy and low income with few middle class. They do not accept cash from non-account holders because of the high likelihood of people bringing in fake bills. They could check the bills but then they would have a much higher turnover which would cost them them allot of time and money.

    I have had better luck buying 3 to 5 rolls at a time and stockpiling them until i have a full box. Every box i have ever bought has had mostly one type of coin in it so I would end up with hundreds of the same coin. When I buy them in lower batches they give me the coins they are using up front to stock their change and there is much better variety because most of them seem to be customer return rolls. Just my opinion. Thanls for the video, I enjoyed the info.

    I've had no issue obtaining entire boxes, but live in a pretty urban area. So they get regular deliveries and deal with a lot of businesses that need coins. In fact at Wells Fargo I had asked for a single box. Usually I'll ask for a box and they'll say let me check if we have it etc.... so the teller say yeah we can do that she grabs the little cart which I'm not thinking anything of it because boxes are heavy (so just be safe). Then a few moments later she comes back with 8 boxes! I was only expecting a single box. Not sure if she misheard me or what but didnt even expect them to hand out 8 boxes.
    She looked so sad about bringing them all out and me only wanting a single box. So told her you know what I'll take 6 boxes hahaha

I started collecting recently and found at the three banks that sold me coins (two I have an account at) the tellers are confused by someone non-business buying coins. Thank you for the information on getting boxes of coins from a bank.
    I have found the resistance you speak of.
    I opened up a new bank account and later that day I emailed the lady that opened the account up to ask about ordering coins.
    Mind you, I spoke to her about collecting coins, and wanting to do this while at the bank. I got the feeling she had no interest in working with me, then. And her email response confirmed it. First, I get a story about needing a business account, I was willing to do that, while telling me none of her other business customers order coins. So, a business account would not have made any difference is what I got out of it.
    One would think a $15,000.00 deposit with zero percent interest paid to me, that the bank can then loan 20% of it out at 7- 20 plus percent would get them to order me some coins.
    Beyond telling her the coins would not be coming back and seeing if we could come to some time period to order coins, once a month, every two months. etc.. There is nothing else I can do.
    I know what the problems are, some bank tellers don't think about customer service nor building customer or potential customer goodwill before saying no. The other issues are pushback from the people delivering the coins, moving and handling the coins in the bank and getting the coins back.
    I don't speak for others, but when I promise to do something I do it. I think too many people assume everyone is lying to them so no becomes the standard response to avoid the hassle.
    There are plenty of banks where I live too. As you said, you need to keep looking until you find a bank or banks willing to work with you and have the cash ready to get the transaction done.
    Tellers are people too. You don't need to go Eddy Haskle, Google him if you don't know who he is, but it help to show appreciation when someone is doing you a favor.

      @GASilverHunter  Před 2 lety

      I hate to hear that. I can tell you that my main bank that I get coins from now told me they absolutely would not order coins. Thats what most coin roll hunters do.. but if you are buying halves and returning them to the same bank... that often leads to a fairly short relationship with that bank. But if you are returning quarters to get nickels or dimes to get pennies... most banks are fine with that because its all currency that will eventually make its way out the door.

    • @GASilverHunter
      @GASilverHunter  Před 4 měsíci +2

      Unfortunately there is no way of knowing. I would say, a lot of coin roll hunters do put marks on the wrappers so they don't accidentally pick up their own returns... so if you see 25 rolls all with the same mark or lettering on them, I would either pass or maybe pick up 2-3 of them to see what you get. Another thing I have done sparingly is take your pocket scale with you. If you are looking at penny rolls... weigh a few of them. If they are all around 126g they are all zinc and likely searched.

    Alright I’ve been to idk even know how many banks around me that I have accounts with. I go in and ask for either one box of nickels or one box of pennies and immediately they ask if I’m a business I’ll say no and then they’ll say I can’t get anything unless I have a business account. Idk if it’s my areas bank, a state law that got passed, or what but it’s annoying. I have 5 different accounts at all separate banks and they all do the same. Ngl I have no clue what to do at this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

      Not sure. May be your area. Perhaps start with customer wrapped coin if they will let you. If you have multiple banks and hitting multiple branches and that’s the story… you may need to open a business account somewhere. Anyone can open one.

    When you're getting coins what's considered too much or too often for coin returns, is it better to return a mixture of coins when your coin roll hunting a bunch, do you get coins from One Bank and then return the change to three different other Banks or what is the percentage that you work with? Of course if you don't mind the ask. Should I try and convince them that I get paid in change?

    • @GASilverHunter
      @GASilverHunter  Před 11 měsíci

      Banks typically doesn't care how you got the change. I find it actually helps when I tell people I am a collector and coin roll hunter. Some branches may give you the cold shoulder but that has not been my experience. I have a really good relationship with nearly every branch I go in to... even the dump banks. I often apologize for bring coins in so often to my dump banks. That said, I do spread out my returns across 2 banks and 3-4 branches. I try to dump my coins to a different bank each time I have coins to return. So this week I returned $1000 in Dollar coins to one Wells Fargo Branch. Today I returned $1000 in Half Dollars to a different Wells Fargo Branch. Over the weekend I dropped off $500 in Quarters to a 5/3rd Branch. So no one bank got saddled with all of that change at the same time. I will say banks typically don't mind getting your pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters... The halves will start to wear on the bank as it costs them time and money to unwrap and bag and return to the armored car companies... and thats why I spread those out as a priority. I have had only 1 branch turn me away in 3-4 years... and I had one regular branch where I was dropping a lot of stuff tell me I had to stop with the halves which I did for about a year. Now I will randomly... like once every month or two... drop halves there. I return all other types of coins to them all the time. Hope this helps.

      It all depends on the time of year that you go. I still get fully new boxes from time to time, but you can definitely tell when the fed is pushing new coins to banks as you will get box after box of new coins.
