I was privileged to see Rostropovich on two occasions. Once as a cello soloist in the Dvorak and once as conductor in the Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich 5th symphonies. These are among the most memorable and profound musical experiences of my life. I have many dozens of his recordings. He was definitely one of a kind.

I know what you mean. I would argue though that William Primrose, Lionel Tertis and Yuri Bashmet have done something of the sorts. They all premiered lots of new pieces, taught, recorded, rasied the bar and so on. And Tabea Zimmermann, Kim Kashkashian, Amihai Grosz, Lawrence Power, Timothy Ridout, Antoine Tamestit (and many others) are definitely carrying on the torch in my opinion 🙂
It's not the same incredible one-man effort that Rostropovich put forth, but it's also really interesting to look into, if you are interested 😊

I've got this collection for Christmas! I enjoy every minute of it! I started the cello 2 years ago and I put my honest videos on CZcams, not to inspire people (because I don't play that well), but just not to discourage older people who also started from scratch like me, so they can see that we don't have all huge progresses like some other CZcamsrs are trying to make us believe. Anyway, this collection comes with a book, translated in French, German and English, 3 dvd's and the rest cd's. I think it was my best gift ever!
@Donna Casserly No, not really. I can play 8 notes on the flute, and 9 chords on the guitar and ukulele. Nothing more. I really started to play the cello from scratch and it is possible to learn it from an elder age. Also to read music. Never done that before either. I hope you will follow your passion and go for it!

And Rostropovich said, in the year 2.000 or so (when I heard him say it), that the greatest cellist ever was Casals :) Of course this is NOT a competition. Thank God for both Casals AND for Rostropovich. AND Dupre, and soooo many others. What a Cello Century !!!
Tho Pham....I heard Rostropovich play at least 20times live...and one thing he was not, was inconsistent!! Your comments are ludicrous.

it’s the dvorak cello concerto
I was playing cello in a dinner orchestra in the painted hall, London when the great man, as a guest, walked past, looked over, smiled, and gave me a nod. A simple act that had a huge impact on me.
Does someone know the name and composer of the piece around 7min58? It repeats at 9min20. thanks!
I listened to the first and second cello concerto of Penderecki, but it doesn't seems to be part of it? Can you name the piece?
Ik tried Shazam and it appears to be the second movement of the Dvorak cello concerto. :)
@@TomG8324, Sorry to be too late, probably by now you already know, but yes, it's Dvořák's cello concerto second theme of the second movement. At the end of the video sounds the 1st theme of the same movement.
Great cellist but his Bach Cello Suites are anything but convincing.
I think Pablo Casals wes the greatest cellist of the 20th century.

Both were great cellist in the 20 th century, unfortunately we did have much recording with Casals, but we have lots and lots of fantastic recording with Rostopovich.
