I used to watch Star Test religiously and I saw this episode before I even knew who Julian Cope was. Ended up getting into his music as an adult, saw him live in 2001. I dig him.

Oh Julian you have been in my life for such a long time. Your music, has lived in my head and heart and I have lived it all even the stuff I've found more difficult.
Why isn't this man known more widely.
What a funny, beautiful, clever, ridiculous wonderful man

Loop tape, yeah. That would be bad. I'd consider it hellish after an indefinite amount of loops, too. Everyone hates on U2 - it's like it's stylish to do, but maybe they actually mean it. I hope so. I like to think a lot of other people have the same sense as me when it comes to matters regarding anything to do with U-stinkin'-2.

"Have you ever been to a fortune teller?" "No... well thats not really the case," Basically he's saying he was at a party years prior with Ian, and someone suggested they have their fortunes done by a fortune teller. They said Mac would would be sucsessful and be loved by everyone but he would die by 30. A drummer by the name of Dave Pickett would try but would not be successful. Julian would be succsessful in his 30s but would be disliked by everyone at 35. They were 18 at the time of the party, at the time of the filming of this show Mac had recently turned 30. So the fortune was not completely accurate. Julian had felt guilty for all that time, over a decade, concerned a bit that Ian would do well and be loved but die by 30, because of the fortune I guess? Maybe it was Julians idea? So he Was rather relived Ian wouldn't die so young and he wasn't going to turn into a complete jerk.

Very interesting, but he was obviously too wired to give his absolute truths; he was being very naughty about The Teardrop Explodes for instance. He has belittled his music output in comparison to his written word since, but he must know he is among the great melody-makers of the eighties. His best-known songs are crap in comparison to his actual best songs. He's done at least twenty songs that are better than "Reward" as an example. Just my opinion, obviously.

    • @DarlingPhenylethylamine
