Thanks!!! Very helpful- looking for a one semester supplement before my oldest starts dual enrollment next year. This give me several options to look into.

For future reference, if you like Rod & Staff minus the teacher element, consider Language Arts from Christian Light Education (CLE), essentially a self-teaching, consumable form of R&S.

I have heard more about them in the last year. I need to look into them😉 Thanks for sharing!!

Couple questions for you. 😊 When do you start grammar instruction? I know there are different thoughts on that. Next, having used different programs, do you switch things up to keep it fresh and learn it different ways or is it more because you find something not working for that particular child? I’m dealing with this with my youngest. First wondering if it’s more of an age thing but not wanting to lose what she has learned (she’s in 3rd grade. We started R&S last year but it’s feeling a bit too abstract this year in the middle of level 3). And wondering if switching to something new would be helpful or more confusing especially if it’s a completely different way of going about it. Not sure if through your experience with several children and several programs could offer wisdom.

Ok yes it could be her age 😉 my boys started anywhere from 3rd to 5th. I switch programs because the first one I use is parent led but very good!! (Will mention that in my next video) then I move to one that would be more independent. I feel like grammar can be like math . You cannot move on until they understand and that will be different for everyone. I would just do a sentence from maybe something she is writing and discuss gently things she has learned (not even everyday). You can then wait until next year to introduce again. Winston Grammar is a gentle hands on Grammar. My 2nd son really struggled and this helped. Lots of prayer and love with gentle review and she will get it. ❤ (but at her age there is no hurry!!!!) by the way I do believe Rod and Staff good but it is advanced😉

My son is 16 and is not college bound but life bound. For his senior year I want a good common sense grammar program that will refresh him to be able to write a letter, email, resume etc. We don’t have time for extensive curriculums so we just want a good broad review so he’s ready for life not academia. I never considered the act prep for this but what you described seems to be what we’re looking for. What did you use for his test prep? Or do you know of something that would fit what we’re looking for? Thanks for your help!

Hi I am wondering if a business management class would be something to look for. I do feel like writing a resume or letter is important. And to tell you the truth my boys have discovered - grammarly- which checks your writing and gives suggestions 😉
Maybe looking at something like Udemy. I wish I could be more helpful there. This was an area of life experience for us - not really using a curriculum 😉

Thanks so much for sharing! What do you use for writing / composition?

We always end up with IEW. Over the years it has been in different forms: videos at home, theme books, co-ops etc😉 I do have a video on that and what we used❤️
