Well, you told me in a video a few years back when I asked you this exact question. You said something like, it's like throwing 50 darts at the board and one or two stick.
There's a video out there where George Benson says the same.
Like: "when I was younger I'd wonder how come at home I learned and practiced 10 new licks but then I play a gig and I'd only remember to play one? Then I said aha, I need to learn and practice 100 and then maybe I'll keep 10."
Hahaha, if he says that, then...🤷‍♂️

Thanks Christiaan, Good to know I'm not the only one. I suppose that is how everyone makes up new licks.

so then the answer is to just forget improv then? and stick to prewritten solos for songs? i mean i had this thought a few weeks ago, and you are going to play these songs to people only so many times. why worry about trying to be so random? might as well just engineer a few solos to each song that you can switch around to throw off your audience. writing songs, and great solos is what is going to pay your bills. doesn't matter if it is truly improvised or not. plus you also have to ask yourself how many of the players that you listen to improvise. now i know you are in a different category as most of them do, but for myself i can only think of maybe 6 or 7. the rest of them don't improvise, and play hard wired solos that never change, or at least not much.
