    Yolo quickly followed Alone (their first song released entirely composed and arranged by them) and is technically their oldest song as Kanami composed this before Band Maid existed. It has my favourite pre chorus and chorus and the counterpoint in the second verse takes me back to 'prog' of the early seventies.

    YOLO (one of my favs by the band) is not only an older song by the band, but it's probably the oldest Kanami-composed song we have. It was released as the A side of a single that marked them making their own music (prior to that, the band played songs written by established songwriters). (The two B-side songs on that YOLO single (Matchless Gum and Unfair Game) are also fabulous songs and well worth reacting to.) YOLO was written as an instrumental by Kanami (lead guitarist and band's songwriter) prior to the band's formation, but adapted for the band in response to Saiki's (lead singer) interest in making it a Band-Maid song. For me, YOLO really shows off Kanami's early, immense songwriting talent.

    • @mikeat2637
      @mikeat2637 Před 9 měsíci

      I had heard that also, and it's a tremendous composition. Not only can you tell the age of the video by Akane's hat, which is really cute, but you can clearly see Saiki's knees unadorned and unfettered, lol. I really enjoy this song, it just has a great feel about it. The general melding of Akane, Kanami and Misa is just amazing, it's like they are part of a hive mind. And you have to give Miku a lot credit for getting her guitar proficiency to where it is today. It sure didn't hurt to have Kanami as her sensei either.

  • @viaverde3153

    Update. This is from 2016. Kanami is still playing her earlier guitar- Addictone and Misa is playing her second Bass Guitar- G&L. Miku was the first to upgrade her guitar from Rickenbacker in 2015 to Zamaitis, the second model of which she is playing here.

  • @JuanSan66
    @JuanSan66 Před 2 lety +26

    Hey, keen eye for detail. Well... yes to everything. You've nailed. This is a song from 2016, specifically the second one they published written and arranged (lyrics and music) by the band, so it's like taking a look at their origins. YOLO was released as a single (theme song of the video game Valiant Knights) with two B-side songs named Matchless Gump and Unfair Game, and instrumental YOLO. I highly recommend it, it's an amazing listening experience, inconceivable for a band that had just started releasing their own tracks. All their equipment was different then (from the drums to the mic) so yes it is true that their sound was different. And of course yes, in the video the lights are modified in intensity to adapt to the message of the song (during the last postchorus). Thank you Tony!, one of my favorite songs, timeless classic.

    This was the closer for their first long-form concert video, at Akasaka Blitz. It doesn't get the attention of the other three concert videos because it's abridged, with only seven of the show's 20 songs, and obviously just doesn't have a lot of material that they released later, but it's on the eve of the release of their first full-length album and the energy is _off the charts_ and triumphant. I can't hear the studio version of "YOLO" without also hearing the crowd cheering. The 30-minute edited length can also be a plus when one has things to do, because we all know how hard it is to watch just _part_ of a Band-Maid performance without getting stuck watching until the end of a two-hour show.

    You can generally tell the time-frame of a Band-Maid video by both the outfits and the gear.
    Here, you see Kanami with an Addictone, Miku with a Zemaitis, MISA with a (I think) G&L 5-string, and Akane with a 4-piece kit, which tells you it's late-2016. Miku had just recently switched from the Rickenbacker 620, Kanami would shortly after switch to PRS, and Akane would shortly after switch to a 5-piece kit.

    So enjoyable hearing your reaction and explanation of theory. This song to me is quite impressive given how early on it was in their career. The instruments are playing some pretty rhythmically creative stuff. It's like they're using complexity, then simplicity, etc. as a means of tension and release. Band-Maid's aesthetic as it was imagined by Miku, the founder of the band, was to use the Japanese Sumi-e style of black (ink) on white (paper) with, very occasionally, a small splash of colour added. Thus the black and white maid's outfits and the blue and red roses. You were right about the colours changing. I love the post-production on this video, which starts in monochrome then has little touches of red, blue, yellow and green appearing, as their instruments' colours are highlighted, then the colours slowly increase in hue until they are all fully revealed. I love the song because you get three songs for the price of one - Rock lite, Rock and a touch of Hard Rock, all neatly sewn together with Obi-Wan Kanami's scoring! Enjoying your breakdowns of their techniques and your appreciation and admiration of all their hard work.

    This is older Band-Maid. Think 2018-ish. Classic Band-Maid sound here: slightly punky, slightly metalish, slightly proggy, catchy chorus,

    We lost TinyHat-san (RIP) in 2019. Others can give better details. I, for one, don't lament it as much because, by all accounts she found it very uncomfortable to wear especially during live performances as it had to be pinned on so tightly. I'm glad she's able to be her best self now because her best self is frickin' awesome.

    Not sue if the video really changed or not. They had a lot of light between them and the camera, either that or it was an effect of a light on some smoke in the air. Ether way it desaturated the color until the light was on just them. If you want to do a LIVE video try 'Real Existence' LIVE. If you want to stick to OMVs if you just want interesting drum beat I suggest 'DICE'. or if you want interesting song structure, 'Puzzle'. Or , if you want something heavy, 'Different' is like 'Black Hole', 'Rinne' is like Thrash Metal.

    This is one of the very very few Band Maid songs that has never clicked with me.
    I do enjoy how the 2-5 note instrumental licks seem to bounce off each other. There's a lot of funk going on underneath, which I love.
    But there's something about the chorus melody and delivery that just doesn't sit well with me. It's almost as if the vocal and instrumental lines are from 2 different songs with completely different feels. Normally that works (👍Corallium), but not here.

    YOU KEEP USING THE WORD POPPY OVER AND OVER. I LOVE GREAT POP ROCK BUT YOU SOUND VERY INSULTING WHEN YOU USE THAT WORD. CAN YOU DEFINE AND EXPLAIN THE MUSIC THEORY OF ,"POPPY"? YOU REALLY SOUND LIKE YOU ARE OVERCOMPENSATIONING FOR SOME KIND OF MISGUIDED HATRED OF YOUR GAY FEMININE SIDE. BTW, SEEMED LIKE THE VOCALS WENT WAY WAY OVER YOUR HEAD. THE INSTRUMENTS WERE PERFECTLY BALANCED TO SHOWCASE THE VOCALS. YOU SHOULD ONLY LISTEN TO INSTUMENTALS IF YOU THINK SINGERS SHOULD BE OVERDSHADOWED AT ALL TIMES.
