You're so genuine by showing us your portfolio even if it is not a full UX case study. I always have thought in my mind that everyone who is hired by a well-known tech company, must have a legit UX case study. After seeing this video, now I was wrong.
Thank you for sharing your portfolio; it makes me feel more at ease as I try to break into the product design field .....I realize that my portfolio doesn't have to be perfect; I should be ok as long as I can talk through my process. Thank you, and happy new year!
Thank you for sharing your experience and portfolio :). Sometimes I worry too much and don't know what kind of designers top-notch companies hire and watching this helped me take a grasp of what it might actually look like like.
Its nice to come across this video. Thanks for keeping it real and for reminding us that life is not about perfection. No company, job, team or project is perfect ... so it isn't fair to expect all UX designers to have "perfect" case studies.
This is cool! I thought you’d show something unimaginable and way out of my league but after seeing the vid, I realized that my portfolio is not that far from what you showed here. Which means that you don’t have to be an industry veteran to join the big leagues like Uber. Thanks! I should probably book a portfolio review with you :P
Thank you for this video, I really find it motivating to see other people talking about their work, especially when they make an engaging video like you, you are awesome
Thanks so much Fermke! ❤️ 3 topics would love to see in your future videos: 1) Curious how you were able to find the real life projects to work on (e.g. reaching out to friends / establishing rapport to someone you didn't know and wining their trust to work on their product 2) Would LOVE to hear more about how you manage relationship with your stakeholders at work (UX collaboration requires good people skills too I'd imagine) 3) Also LOVE to learn more about your thinking process about design problems (e.g. tradeoffs & decisions around what should be built). Thanks again!
@@femkedesign You are beyond amazing! Thank you for all your support for the community! As I start preparing for my transition into the UX world in 2021, I look forward to chatting in depth during your mentoring session! :) Thanks again and happy holidays!
Thanks for sharing Femke! Your videos are very helpful. I have a question though. How did you present your work? Did you have a PDF presentation and show your work as prototypes?
Question for Femke or anyone else that might know the answer! I have a few ui/ux-projects that are 2 years old, that i do like and want to implement in my portfolio now! however, as i've gotten better i do notice that they could use some improvements. Should i improve them before adding them to the portfolio, or should i leave them to show how my skills have developed/show growth? PS: I'm so glad i found your channel! 🥰 It's so wonderful to get some insight from someone in the industry about expectations, how to get in etc. And even though i just found you i have already learned a lot, so thank you! keep up the great work! 😀
Most projects don't have much to do with UX per se, and they are mostly web design projects. It's interesting to know that this portfolio got you hired at Uber 👏🏽
Thanks a lot for sharing your past projects! Your videos are always helpful x I had few questions while i was watching this. Seems like you had quite a number of projects! Was this the portfolio you got your initial interview with? If so, did you select few projects to actually walk them through in the interview stage?
Thanks a lot for this video, Femke! Such great work!! It actually explained a lot why I haven't been getting many interviews... I was like "Right! THAT's what it's supposed to look like!" :D Did you actually show that many projects? And I saw you posted a link to how to present projects during the interview, but did you have to send in a portfolio first? If you did, do you have any advice on how to put up a portfolio document? The one that you submit with the application.
Hi Femke! Thanks for sharing yout portfolio. Recentely, I was considering doing a bit of freelance to include in my portfolio. Do you remember any of your go-to ux/ui freelance job offers platmorms or are you (or anyone else reading this) familiar with some current ones? However, as of now, I don't have any experience in commercial projects. Can you talk a bit how to get started with freelance and gain clients trust?
Out of curiosity, since, as you said, you didn't have much concrete ux-work to show, I was just wondering if in the interview you talked anything about the "pre-design" ux-work at all? (thinking personas, user journeys, stuff like that) Or is your job maybe still mor focused on the more visual aspects of ux-work? 😊 So interesting to see either way!
Good info to know for future potential jobs! Where you recommend storing projects to add to portfolio? Like a local drive? External drive? Or does it matter?
Well the portfolio is good, but i expected more for be able to enter to Uber. This makes me feel that is not that veeeery difficult as I had imagine. 😅
Femke thank you for these videos, but want to make a constructive criticism. So you applied to the company with that portfolio, but in your other video you were talking about how a portfolio should be. So I'm asking where the why section or refinement section.. Did you share the ideation process of your work or your story how you design these products? So in theory your arguments are valid about how a portfolio should be, but in reality design process changes based on the client needs, budget and time. so it affects the all UX phases like Research, IA, IxD, UI and Prototyping and also deliverables...Thank you again for that great video...
Hey! Thanks for the questions - the work I showed in this video is from 4+ years ago. So my advice in the video around presenting portfolio projects is advice and lessons I've learned since the work you saw in this video. Hope that helps clarify.
Hi, are you a uxr or ux designer? What does a portfolio look like for a ux researcher and how do you create one from scratch as a newbie coming into the field? Thx!
Hi Femke, Thank you so much for sharing this. I'm in a bit of a tight spot right now where I don't have all the info I need to build a full case study with some of my work as I wasn't organized or thinking to save more of the technical and informative information around the projects I worked on, rather just anything that was design. Do you have any suggestions on how to showcase your work with limited visuals and limited background/success metrics?
I have a video coming out soon all about how to talk about projects that didn’t ship or where you don’t have business impact. As for lack of visuals, that is really important. I would caution against showcasing work when you don’t have the supporting visuals as design is such a visual medium and you’ll be expected to have visuals to support your story
Bahaha this video was not only useful but cute. Also after I shared a lot of your videos, apparently videos like this one hit hard for many of my peers who are juniors, cause there are visual examples. I found this contrast interesting as a senior myself, because sometimes I work on stuff and just listen to your video, because what you just talk about are often agreeable, useful and whatnot to me
How do you present the demo of your projects? What database and server do you need to give them for the employers to access them.? How do you do that please help me
Hey, thanks for the video. What do you mean when you mention don't have design thinking? Do you mean you jump straight into the visual design work instead of the research process? Thanks.
Femke: I don’t think this is a ux project Me: it definitely is! You thought of the ux and made good decisions so those websites both looked good and made sense 👏🏼 Maybe she meant they didn’t represent *product* design work?
Any suggestions of where to find freelance work? I tried to register in some sites but its was not accepted, I think because I don't have much experience

Of course! Happy New Year!
Truly inspirational. I'm trying to get into the UX/UI space after years in engineering/manufacturing, and watching your vids calms my nerves.
Glad to hear it! Good luck with your journey :)
Thank you for showing your previous work. I kinda expected perfection from the start.

The downside of being a digital nomad... can't buy table and chair :( rely on a coworking space! the desk looks awesome!
I love your new setup
Thanks for your video
I am a big fan of you and love to watch any video you post these days
Great video! Have you created a deck / presentation to showcase the projects? Or was it just like case studies on web?
8:47 Look how organized I was back then, that's so cute. 🤣😂
I'm guessing that changed very quickly. In my case, things get messy.

Hello Femke, I am a big fan of yours, I just want to ask what software are you using for the footer text animation? Thank you! ❤

Hi Femke! What kind of UX research would you suggest for a digital product company's website like Moonmail?
