Can someone explain why this happens?

I've been questioning why it happens, but I can't seem to figure out why this isn't a more asked question

I know this has to do something with sound being a wave and all, with repeating parts of low pressure and high pressure. However, what does that mean? And how would sound be affected if there wasn't repeats of high and low pressure?
