During WWII Britain and Germany were sworn enemies. By 1965 the relationship between the two countries was so solid that the late British monarch her majesty Queen Elizabeth II was on a state visit to western Germany.

Mum was a kid living around Carshalton way when the German buzzbombs destroyed the first of three family homes her Dad and Mum would lose during the Blitz. She told me of the time when her Mum was heading toward the safety of the Parish Church when Nan decided it was no good and turned around. The church took a direct hit that night with all inside killed. Mum recalled to me how she watched in stunned horror as a airplane spun into the Crystal Pa lace while Dad told of the sky dark as night with dogfighting Spitfire and ME109.
These are the reasons I decided I would give up my career to take care of Mum and Dad. I insisted they pass away at home with myself at their side lightly holding tightly a once strong but now so very frail hand.
