Inimitable MP. Heard several times in Chicago. Chatted with him also. Fun chat. (Amateur pianist, myself). Heard a younger Pollini perform the Boulez ps 2 with such skill, and he shaped the form so that this difficult composition actually made sense to my ears.

I've read many times that Pollini at this age was actually superior to the artist he became a few years later--the extremely cautious perfectionist who was actually a bit dull. Now I hear it. In fact, if I didn't know this was Pollini I honestly wouldn't recognize him. His tone is even different, better than later

@@thepianocornertpcAh. You were at the Chopin competition? Look, Pollini was a great pianist. However, when I think to myself "Who would I like to hear playing this piece?" I don't think of Pollini. I'm not the only person who criticized him for being a perfectionist at the expense of expression. If you want flawless playing with beautiful tone and impeccable musicianship then ABM is the pianist. I think Pollini did have an unusually large repertoire. Many pianists with stratospheric reputations didn't actually have large repertoires.

I agree with MarkSmith. I really like his playing at this very young age of 18. Later his playing got dry, cold and computer like. I also heard him play live in Carnegie Hall in 1976. I mention that because some have said live performances were very different from studio recordings.

      私が足掛け15年に渉るウィーン資料研究滞在中に生演奏で接したポリーニは当時50代。頭髪も薄くなりかけていて、既に老境の域に差し掛かっているように見えました。演奏も。
