    Imagine that greenhouse but only the roof glazing is above ground. A pit greenhouse. I built one in Missouri. It was a tropical greenhouse for orchids and only cost $18/month to operate. The floor was always about 56 degrees F due to the earth and the glazing was sloped for the latitude to max out solar penetration in winter. Worth the excavation cost.

      I have a question if you dont mind. What is the cover crop that you plant in your beds for fixing the soil? When do you sow these and when do you cut them down. I would love to do the same this year to improve my soil. Thank you for your time. Please keep making videos, id love to see how you sow / plan your seeds for successional harvests etc. Your videos are excellent! @@manuelangerer-permaculture

      @@Joe-yo1tmHey there and thank you very much! I use alfalfa, lupine, buckweed, vetch, beans, grains and clover. I sow these whenever I have no use for some of the space in the vegetable beds, but most of the cover cropping I`m doing happens in Autumn. But I`ve also sown some in the beginning of February when I noticed that the soil on two of my beds needs some decompaction and fertility.

      Thanks! Yes you are right, this building is not built for high productivity in terms of food production. Due to the limited light inside a passive solar greenhouse (which results from the need of good insulation) I do not think that there is a passive solar greenhouse that can put out the production of a normal polytunnel. But it enables you to grow plants that would not grow in a specific season or climate otherwise!

    I have watched a few of these greenhouse videos, and once finished they always just seem to have a few potted plants sitting in them. I noticed there was no wide shot showing the plants in the greenhouse lol.

    • @manuelangerer-permaculture
      @manuelangerer-permaculture  Před 7 měsíci +2

      Yes, that is often the case. A passive solar greenhouse is not the place of highest productivity. It is a place of multifunctionality or it enables you to grow stuff that wouldn`t grow in your climate without it. If you want high productivity then build a polytunnel. In a passive solar greenhouse there is less light and you also can get problems with aphids and other insects fast. But it is warmer in winter and cooler in summer than a normal greenhouse and that`s where the advantages are. It`s a passivly heated, multifunctional room which is perfect for starting seedlings, tropical plants and much more. It needs to fit the context, otherwise it is not worth the effort building one.

    • @manuelangerer-permaculture
      @manuelangerer-permaculture  Před rokem +4

      Danke! Im Gewächshaus ist es im Winter im Schnitt etwa 5 - 10 Grad wärmer als draußen. Wenn starker Frost kommt, ist diese Spanne noch größer - Letzte Woche hatten wir in der Nacht -17 Grad, im Gewächshaus hatte es noch immer etwa ein Grad. Das gute ist ja immer, dass wenn es richtig kalt wird auch die Sonne scheint - weshalb das Gewächshaus auch gleich wieder gewärmt wird.

  • @markschuette3770
    @markschuette3770 Před rokem

    i would reduce the roof glazing by at least 1/2- since its the major source of overheating. and maybe all together depending on what your trying to grow- or as a heating source for an atatched house only i would eliminate it totally. also in the higher latitudes i would go down to vertical front glazing inorde to minimize summer over heating.

    • @manuelangerer-permaculture
      @manuelangerer-permaculture  Před rokem +9

      In our case, if I were to build the greenhouse again, I would even increase the glazing a bit to have a little more light for the plants. The building is far from overheating in summer. The huge amount of clay in the walls and the good orientation of the building keep it cool in the summer. The hottest temperature recorded inside in the summer was 34 degrees Celsius when it was 39 degrees outside.

      Wir haben keine extra Beleuchtung, für unsere Zwecke brauchen wir das nicht - Mit Solarpanel und Akku wäre das natürlich eine Option. Ein wirklich cooles Gewächshaus. Vielfach sieht man bei diesen passive solar greenhouses, dass es einen saisonalen Wärmespeicher gibt (dass bspw. zur Kühlung im Sommer warme Luft in den Boden geblasen wird und diese Wärme im Winter mit der gleichen Lüftung wieder hochgeholt werden kann). Hast du das auch so gemacht und wenn nein, wieso nicht? Bleibt das Gewächshaus den ganzen Winter über frostfrei? Vielen Dank und liebe Grüsse aus der Schweiz :)

    • @manuelangerer-permaculture
      @manuelangerer-permaculture  Před rokem +2

      Danke für dein Kommentar! Ich habe das auch gemacht, habe die Rohre und den Ventilator mittlerweile abgebaut und zugeschüttet. Das System ist meiner Meinung nach enorm überbewertet und bedeutet einen großen baulichen Mehraufwand, der es nicht wert ist. Außerdem vergräbt man wieder eine Menge Kunststoff im Boden. Unser Gewächshaus ist das ganze Jahr über frostfrei und überhitzt im Sommer nicht, weil die Bauweise und Ausrichtung gut gewählt ist. Eine Erdbatterie braucht man nicht, wenn man gut baut! Liebe Grüße aus Oberösterreich!

      @Dutlerveili Před rokem +1

      @@manuelangerer-permaculture vielen lieben Dank für die aufschlussreiche Antwort :) so ein frostfreies Gewächshaus ist schon etwas mega tolles und eröffnet einem jede Menge Möglichkeiten und wenn das aif unserem Breitengrad sogar ohne den ganzen Plastik im Boden geht, ist es umso toller.

    • @manuelangerer-permaculture
      @manuelangerer-permaculture  Před rokem +1

      Yes we have some spider-mites inside the greenhouse, especially in winter! In summer I often water the plants from above, so that the leaves get washed regularly and in this way the mites dissapear during summer. In winter I don`t want to do this because the leaves would dry very slowly so the mites can spread a bit. But no problems for the plants until now. You just have to clean the fruits a bit before you eat them ;-)
