Segment 1: Introduction to Oil Painting
"First up, let's talk about oil painting. This traditional medium has been cherished by artists for centuries, and it offers a unique set of characteristics that set it apart."
    1. Medium and Base:
    • "Oil paints are pigments mixed with drying oils, commonly linseed oil."
    • "Artists often work on surfaces like canvas or wood, primed with gesso for a smooth base."
    2. Layering and Blending:
    • "One of the key features is the ability to layer colors, creating depth and complexity."
    • "The slow drying time allows for seamless blending directly on the canvas."
    3. Drying Time:
    • "Oil paintings have a slow drying time, providing artists with an extended working period for adjustments and refinements."
    4. Texture and Impasto:
    • "Texture can be built up with thick paint strokes, and impasto techniques create a three-dimensional effect."
    5. Opacity:
    • "Oil paints tend to be more opaque, covering underlying layers effectively."

Segment 2: Introduction to Watercolor Painting Transitionanimationorvisualcue
"Now, let's shift our focus to watercolor painting - a medium loved for its unique characteristics and luminous quality."
    1. Medium and Base:
    • "Watercolors use pigments suspended in a water-based solution, often gum arabic."
    • "Artists typically work on watercolor paper, which can handle the wet application of paint."
    2. Layering and Transparency:
    • "Unlike oils, watercolors are applied in transparent layers, allowing the underlying layers to shine through."
    • "The transparency of watercolor pigments contributes to a beautiful, luminous effect."
    3. Drying Time:
    • "Watercolors dry quickly, making it challenging to make significant changes once the paint is applied."
    4. Texture and Granulation:
    • "Texture is often reliant on the paper's surface, and some pigments naturally separate, creating a granulated effect."
    5. Control and Precision:
    • "Watercolor demands precision, as corrections can be challenging due to the transparent nature of the paint."

Wow Marion. Interesting. Love your finished painting. I have been painting with oil for seven years. I have participated in an art class painting mostly oil for that lenght of time. Students in that class find watercolor difficult because they feel they don't have control 😂. However,I find it exciting. You have been a huge inspiration. ❤

Hi Judy, that is so interesting and thank you for your lovely comment too. Which do you think is easier, oil or watercolour? I know it's a tricky question, lol

@@MarionChapmanArtist hello again. I don't think either medium is easy. Oil sort of stays where you put it. Mark making, texture and colours are wonderful. And if you are painting in a representational way it is very satisfying. HOWEVER. Watercolour is so exciting!! Putting colours down that move and mix is wonderful. So much scope and creative experiences. I am trying to paint with watercolor every day and am gaining confidence. I paint with oil once a week at class. Marion, your tutorials are really very inspiring. Cheer, Judy

Is painting with these oil sticks similar in nature to painting with oil pastels? I am a watercolorist as well - but dabble with acrylics & soft & oil pastels. These oil sticks intrigue me... You are quite a talented "oil" painter as well...Love it.

Hi Ann, thanks! Yes, they are similar but oil sticks are fatter, wetter and softer than oil pastels. And so easy to use and blend.
