Great episode this week as Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum remember the first appearance of a very special guest in Season 3 Episode 5: PERRY!
The guys share on set intimidations working with the great Michael McKean, some funny and embarrassing off set stories with him, and what it was like working alongside a guest who really moves the show forward.
Michael talks about the crazy coincidence of the coinciding solar flares when the episode aired and how impressive the wire work was here.
Tom remembers his iconic tractor flipping scene and his flax seed fast while on set during this shoot.

PERRY (S3E05) MICHAEL MCKEAN Intimidation, Crazy Coincidences & Tom’s Tractor Throw #smallville #talkville #season3 - Zábava
"He's been in this town for two days and has been drunk the whole time, and he's noticing more about Clark than Lana and Chloe ever do." 🤣🤣 Quote of the episode for sure. Well done Ryan.
so accurate hahah
I actually laughed on that one as well.
I sometimes feel like the only way to really view this show is that everyone around Clark basically knows he's magic, but his friends are too nice to press him about any details, and Lex can never quite get any proof of exactly what's up. I mean Lionel TOTALLY knows Clark has super powers at this point but is just keeping quiet about it while keeping various investigations going for more info.
But yeah that was a killer line by Ryan haha.
Ryan wasn't entirely right tho cause Lana knew since Clark saved her from the tornado that he might be different, she even confronted him about it. Lana had suspicions hence why she believed Van in "Extinction" when he told her that Clark was bulletproof. As for Chloe she was always digging in Clark's personnal life cause she was intrigued by him being secretive and was like something doesn't add up lol. Perry's advantage was that he was conscious and right in front of Clark when he saw him using his powers.
@@TalkVillePodcast Perry White is the OG azzhole boss newpaper editor before Spiderman Marvel's new 60's superbeing got J. Jonah Jameson
"If you ever make it to Metropolis, look me up. I owe you one." That line gave me chills when I first saw this episode.
Yes I feel like they are really starting to lay the ground work for Clark's "future."
Me too!
Yeah me too & the song accompaniment Walking in Memphis also basically made the whole scene! Can’t believe they dissed it - that has really upset me
The best part of this show was the Hangman game in the beginning when Tom gives both Michael and Ryan nearly every letter and they still couldn't come up with Joseph. The Wheel of Fortune memes.
All of us who have already solved it, yelling at our screens, "JOSEPH!!!"😅
The song "Walking in Memphis" I always believed was a tribute to Lane Smith's portrayal of Perry White in the old Lois and Clark the New Adventures of Superman. His character was a huge Elvis fan.
I like when John Schneider goes all Dukes of Hazard and does some crazy truck driving 😂
Michael McKean was the perfect choice to play Perry White! He did a fabulous job! Love this podcast ❤❤❤
yup fantastic casting
The reason "Walking In Memphis" was used in the ending scene was a tip of the hat to Lane Smith who'd played Perry White in "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman." In the classic comics and TV series, Perry White was known for exclaiming "Great Caesar's Ghost" when he was surprised. In "Lois and Clark," since Lane Smith was a southerner, they made his Perry White an avid Elvis fan and his exclamation was "Great shades of Elvis." Hence, a song about Memphis. Sadly, Lane passed two years later from ALS.
Awesome background, thank you. I'm going to add it to the Smallville wiki entry for this episode!
This is where Season 3 really starts kicking into gear. Perry is such a key episode, and not only because it introduced an iconic character. It's the episode where Lex begins to unravel, where Lionel's deep dark past begins to come to the forefront and where Chloe starts wondering how she can escape Lionel's clutches.
I also give it extra credit for treating a legacy character with respect. A lost art in today's Hollywood.
great point. string of great episodes from here
It also establishes the source of Clark’s powers, which is a small but important detail in Superman mythos.
Aside from Christopher Reeve, Michael McKean is the best guest star this show ever had. The man just commands the screen every time he's on and his range of emotions is amazing. The scene with Michael at the Luthor Mansion especially is brilliant. He was the best choice to portray any version of Perry White.
I think Dean Cain's guest appearance was pretty cool too. I don't remember exactly what season he guest starred in (maybe season 7?) but I do remember watching it like "oh shit, that's Superman" lol.
@@SarahthevampyrslayerI think it was Season 6. He portrayed an immortal surgeon named Curtis Knox, which was supposed to be a version of Vandal Savage from the comics. His character was “healing” meteor-infected people, and he was killing some of them and stealing their organs to make his sedated wife immortal.
@@Sarahthevampyrslayer Season 7 Episode 4. Dean was very good in it. He played the creepy character better than anyone would have predicted. Like spencer said, it should have been Vandal Savage, but they named him differently.
@@Costas22 he definitely played a creep so well. I think him playing in that movie The Perfect Husband helped him tap into his creep factor lol.
Season 3 of Smallville is really when the show starts to hit its stride. Love the podcast, gentlemen!!
agreed! Al & Miles talk about it in depth in a couple episodes
Seasons 3 and 4 are my favorite of the series. I have to agree with you. So good!
Season 3 or season 5 is the best season. Really liked both.
Caller: I thought Clark’s secret being revealed was overused. Do you agree?”
Rosey: No
I laughed so hard🤣🤣🤣🤣
haha love Michael P
That was funny and I also love the honesty from Rosey and how excited he was about the episode.
In this episode is clear that Clark is hero with or without his powers.
Clark usually takes responsibility even when he doesn’t have powers.
"Can you imagine an uber back then? You'd have to call the guy to pick you up..."
Michael casually describing how taxi's work.
Man the crazy stuff actors do for their jobs. Tom mentioning fasting for days... probably getting ready for Relic. I actually love that upcoming episode. Thanks guys! Fun part of my day!❤
haha getting ready for relic. love it
I always felt that any time Perry was on screen, I knew it would be a great performance. Not that other guest stars weren't great, but he was just such a great casting choice, he was a breath of fresh air.
couldn't agree more
And when Clark saved him on the gorge without his powers, it most certainly did show that he was always still a hero. Really appreciated how the series often touched on that.
This was one of my favorite episodes of the series. When Clark throws the tractor and the look on Perry's face when it lands in front of him just priceless 😂I give this episode 2 🌹 and and he does return for 2 more episodes later in the series. 😅
going to be a top one this season for sure
Aww man, I loved his return when he had scenes with Lois!! Epic!!
Their chemistry was instanteous!
Perry: Great Ceasars Ghost!
😂😂😂😂❤❤❤❤❤
The reaction Lex had to Perry was spot on. While Lex wants to know Clark's secrets, he has a problem with Perry violating his friend's privacy. We see this many times. The internal turmoil of wishing to know someone better while still wanting to protect them. In this case, he has to deal with his dad's ruthless expectations, his own curiosity, and his relationships with both guys.
Big Michael McKean fan so this is definitely one of my favorite Smallville episodes. He played a great Perry White. And though he did make a few more appearances I was always kind of disappointed he didn't appear with a little more frequency in later seasons after the Daily Planet becomes more prominently featured.
Did anyone else’s heart soar when Michael gave the highest rating???❤❤❤ love you guys!!!
I seriously considered calling in about Perry White NOT noticing Clarks hands were healed less than 24 hours after suffering MAJOR rope burns while saving him at the end of the episode, but held off figuring someone else would mention it. (which ended up being the case) Just prior to this, Lana ALSO missed this when she met Clark in the barn in the previous scene.
The fact that Welling shares the same middle name as Rosey's brother makes it even worse he couldn't remember it. 🤣
He also shares it with Clark, his middle name is Joseph too
Must be fate
Perry and Clark were at their own crossroads. Remember how the story ended? Perry says to Clark something to the extent of “I read your stories. They need work, but they’re good. Hit me up if you need a job in Metropolis. I owe you one.”
That planted the seed for Clark so he could start thinking about his future choices in life. Perry had his crossroads and he chose his path.
It was perfect, IMO.
Season 3 is when I really remember being wowed by the acting, especially Michael's performance in upcoming episodes.
Perry White dumping the flask after Clark threw the tractor was a direct homage to Superman 2 when Zod, Ursa, and Non where did on earth, but landed in the water, and then walked on water. The guy in the fishing boat saw this, looked at his cup, and then he dumped his cup over the side of the boat. Lol
I love that they paid respect to that scene😆
I thought of this scene too
I love almost every single episode of this television series. At the time this show came out, I was serving aboard the aircraft carrier USS GEORGE WASHINGTON CVN 73, and our ship was in NEW York harbor on September 11th. I was witness to one of the worst events in Hyman history, and our entire division would watch this show on our downtime. It kind of gave us exactly what we needed at that time, which was HOPE. The belief and hope in humanity 🙏 that we as military members needed so deeply. This show has magic in it.😢 There's a quality that is emanating from each and every episode that inspired all of us. Some of that has to do with the performances of. TOM WELLING and Michael Rosenbaum. Some of it has to do with the scripts of AL and MILES. (Who's presence is missed greatly in the last few seasons, IMO, but it's still good)and some of it has to do with the nature of the characters from Superman. No ther film or television show has captured the spirit of the source material in the same way. The show and its stories make the viewer want to be a better person. Thank you for your work. I promise you that it was time well spent. It had a positive effect on this world. 🌎
Ryan's 'ahaan!' after Michael reads Clark's line "..glad that this phenomenon has nothing to do with him!" is so funny 🤣🤣
This was a fun episode for me as we get to see a rare occasion where Clark loses control of his powers but doesn’t actually lose them (they flicker on and off during the solar eclipse)
42:40 Choked on my water when I heard this noise from Tom lolz
I feel like Ryan gets the show more than Tom and Michael lol😂. He comes from a viewers perspective. But walking in Memphis kinda sets the tone for perry and Clark's future relationship from how perry gets back on his true journalistic path.
"To Littleville, Kansas! And all the little Kansassians in it!" I always loved that line. XD
Michael McKean is a great talent. He has made numerous guest appearances but I particularly like him on X-Files and Homeland. Besides acting, he and Annette O'toole received an Oscar nomination for best song back in 2003.
Did not know! Off to Google I go
I totally forgot he was on _Homeland._ His character bio on the show wiki just says "Jeffrey Turner is a judge." That's it haha. Season 1 apparently.
I love the music written by Michael McKean and Annette O’Toole. A Mighty Wind is one of my favorite movies ever.
The X-Files Dreamland episodes are great.
My favorite scene on this episode was the tractor toss. From the toss-to Johnathan and Clark’s acting-to the tractor landing-and finally Michael McKean’s incredible comedic timing! It was a great and hilarious scene! Well done to all actors involved!
That tractor throw scene will always be iconic. Great episode. Mike McKean was a great Perry White. You get to see Lex’s continued slipping mental state which comes to a big conclusion in the coming episodes. I’m giving this one a solid two roses 🌹🌹
yeah funny hearing how it's so requested for tom
Having a patreon subscriber on is a fantastic idea. Love the podcast and I'll always hold on to Smallville, but understandably, Michael and Tom tend to not notice the shows easter eggs and references to other DC characters, franchises and some other deeper lore connections. It's almost never important to the overall story I admit, but people tend to appreciate those details. That's why the shows creators had the set designers put in references to things like "Smallville Crows vs Emerald Knights" on signs posted in the halls of Smallville High, as an example. Emerald Knights of course being a reference to Green Lanterns. It's also why there are entire youtube channels dedicated to pointing out all those references in movies and shows, channels that have million of subscribers and views in many cases. I've never seen anyone do an Easter egg breakdown for Smallville, it's quite an undertaking watching 220 or so episodes and paying attention for every last Easter egg, and since you guys are going through the series for the first time it's an excellent opportunity to point out those easter eggs. Having a patreon on the show would be a great opportunity to get a long time fans perspective on things, chances are they would have been a fan of Superman and superheroes before Smallville came out and may very well see a lot of references to other DC characters/franchises that otherwise go unmentioned.
Michael McKean as Perry White was superb! hope you could bring him at some point for at least S9 (Hostage, great Perry/Lois episode, S10 was a voice guest). The introduction of one of the Fab4 of the Daily Planet
I loved Michael McKean as Perry White along with the episode itself. It was also nice to have Clark kind of lose his powers during the solar flare, but then later come back. Thank you guys so much! ❤
still can't believe there was an actual solar flare
I love this episode! So much fun! Michael McKean as Perry White is an awesome character! And the episode reveals to Clark and the Kents the source of Clark's powers, which I believe was previously unknown. And the effects of the solar flare and how the creators played with that were fun, funny, and just awesome! One of my favorites!
Laurence Fishburne plays Perry White in MoS and Batman vs. Superman!
This show has become my mid-week morning therapy session for work 😅😅😅
I give this episode 🌹🌹🌹 if we judge by Tom’s standards it works on so many levels, and it became an fan favorite the minute it aired. Michael McKean is a legend and he did an amazing job, perfect casting. Finally the song “Walking in Memphis” is one my favorite exit songs of all time, it’s quirky and upbeat and you know that there’s more to come between those two characters. Awesome episode!
“I just put on a suit and covered up my……flaws.” Rosey…🤣🤣🤣
Nobody can play Jonathan Kent as well as John Schneider did. The writing is excellent, but one's gotta sell it. A man of principle.
On a different note, Tom could insult you with that smile on his face and you will still smile back. It lights up the room lol. I grew up watching Smallville and really miss the show. When is the animated version coming out?
One of my favorite episodes. Total commitment from every actor😂
I wish Perry had been in more than three episodes! I especially loved him later when he had scenes with Lois in season 9.
I’m still laughing that they couldn’t figure out Joseph, especially after Tom gave them almost every letter… 😂
Tom is still as charming and magnetic as he was in the show wow
I'm awaiting a major surgery here in New Zealand and just wanted to thank Michael, Tom and Ryan for setting this up and even though I can't ask my own questions because I'm literally on the other side of the world, I learn something everyday. ❤❤
Great episode and great song (walking in memphis), inspiring music, makes clark feel more like a hero. The music makes this show 10x better. Michael Mckean is a great actor in BCS too.
X Styles😄 McKean performance here reminded me a lot on his The X Files "Dreamland" character Morris Fletcher. This episode was first for Dr. Claire Foster. I would like maybe a longer Lex/Claire/Lionel story arc. Playing with Lex mind was fun (to watch). Can't wait for "Shattered" and " Asylum".
Such an underrated episode. Perry's so good and his character and this ep were handled so well.
TGI Wednesday!!!! Love this episode! Perry White is in the house! Love the procuel story of Perry before he was the editor od the Dialy Planet! Special effects were great and also the arb about Clark Powers and the solar flare!! Love you guys!! And the bust is behind Tom!!!! Love how it looks there!!!!
the man himself! glad we got to feature Toms finally
🌹🌹Solid 2 Rose's, Cameo from a Big name from DC Comics Superman Characters Perry White! "Great Caesars Ghost!" And The Legendary Tractor Throw🤣 Priceless moment in the Show💙❤️🤘 And the start of Dark Lex and What is to come some of the Best Acting of Michael Rosenbaum can't wait💯 Awesome episode and hearing the Stories 👌
Shoutout to editing for the "Get out" part from Rosey. ON FUCKIN POINT
Love the talk ville podcast, been fun hearing your thoughts about each episode. I’m rewatching the whole show again, currently on season 9 right now
Glad you enjoy it!
Re: Walking in Memphis
I think I once read on Kryptonsite (or somewhere) they used that song because the Perry White character in the Lois & Clark show was a huge Elvis fan, and it was a homage to him.
Oh. Make sens
Michael McKean’s brilliant performance along with the interesting and random conversations between the three of you made this a brilliant episode. Thank you for entertaining us with your unique point of view 😊
If you want to decide on Ryan's favorite scene at the same time as Tom while factoring in the delay, just have Micheal write his choice on the paper he's always holding and Tom can vocalize his while Michael visually reveal his.
I never had a problem with the song at the end. I always got the feeling that it was conveying new beginnings for both Perry and Clark because Perry offered an avenue into The Daily Planet (and we all know he ends up there). I don't think the lyrics were meant to be taken literally. I think it set the right mood for the end of this episode.
According to IMDB it was a throwback to Lane Smith's portrayal of Perry White in Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, because he loved Elvis.
@@chuckbeard8585 That's interesting
Exactly. Can’t believe they criticised the song!
One of the better episodes, especially if you knew the lore, which I didn't. Would've been great if more episodes were like this.
It always stuns me how much you guys don't remember 😂 I was surprised by the role Perry plays when he comes back to Smallville so I'm excited to see your guys reaction!
This episode has my favorite ever Chloe line to Perry: Wise decision coming inside. The weather service expects a light shower of threshing machines followed by a drizzle of combines.
Michael this is were you started SHINING MAN,THE WAY YOU LOOKED AT LANA WHEN SHE CAME TO YOUR HOUSE ABOUT PERRY,GIVES ME COLDCHILLS
Perry reminded me of a more serious version of Otis from the Andy Griffith Show. Haha. I loved it. ❤
I just finished the whole series just now. Been doing Smallville marathon since July. I LOVE IT!!! I didn’t get to watch the series back when it started cos work and stuff but now I’m 52 years old, I guess it’s time to catch up. LOL. I’m a Superman fan but this series really tops it. It tells a story about Clark Kent growing up and facing challenges. Great job. Tom Welling is the best Clark Kent/Superman and Michael Rosenbaum is the best Lex Luthor!! Kristen Kreuk will always be Lana Lang! Ok bottom line.. All the cast are superb!!!
Totally agree! Superman is my favorite superhero. But this show really made me fall in love with the character even more. One of the best shows ever made. Best origins of a superhero ever done. The show will always be one of a kind for many years to come.
Tom Welling has the same middle name as Clark Kent, Joseph. That’s ironic and iconic.
The ending of the episode was charming as hell. Playing the song Walking in Memphis as Perry leaves on the bus for Metropolis was absolute gold.
I love this episode, my favorite scene is Lex opening the bar's door with the light behind him, kind of a western hero, 🌹🌹.
Yes Michael McKean was an awesome guest star and added so much to the episode! He is a Legend, awesome show guys!
13:10 Speaking as a former full time thespian myself what I love about this podcast and how most dedicated professional actors work is regardless of the show’s audience or rabid fanbase good actors may not know a damn thing extra about the franchise they are in BUT they WILL give it their all from scene to scene. Hearing one of the best Lex Luthor actors ever genuinely wonder out loud if Perry White is an important Superman side character simultaneously brought my DC loving heart nothing but joy and a tinge of pathetic fanboy sadness…
“He doesn’t know who Perry White is!? Next you’re gonna tell me Rosie doesn’t know how many kids Perry has or where he went to school!?! Geesh, I hope somebody got fired for THAT blunder!?”…
Moments later….
“Uh oh… I have wasted my life…” 😜🤣❤️
Great episode of Talkville btw!
The tractor toss was likely my favorite scene in this episode .
Very good episode!!!... Perry was great, however, my favorite storyline in this episode was Lex battling his demons and being the usual big brother to both Clark and Lana so shoutout to Rosey 😎... Pete came in clutch and seeing Pete and Lana saving Clark in this one was a nice twist 👍🏾👍🏾... Jonathan and Martha being super patient with Clark's powers going out of control (due to the solar flare) shows how great they are as parents (as usual, of course)... Perry got on my nerves, which shows how great McKean is as this character ✊🏾✊🏾... All in all, I give this episode 🌹🌹1/2 (2.5 roses)... #TalkVilleWednesdays #LoveThePodcastFellas
Perry White is in like every Superman media. Cartoons, all of the movies. Any time Clark Kent and Lois Lane work for the Daily Planet, Perry White is there.
Perry White was in the original superman films, lois and clark- the 1993 series and even in man of steel played by Laurence fishbourne
When you get Pete on the podcast, that will be peak Smallville. Really hoping for it one day. 😂
They have been so sarcastic about Pete, it feels really unlikely at this point haha.
@@jerodastespecially after Michael has mocked Sam's acting skills 😬
And the show really did Pete dirty as a character. I don't blame Sam if he doesn't want to be associated
For the Stride gum episode lol
One of my favorite episodes of the entire series. Michael McKean was a perfect choice to portray Perry White. I would also have to agree that Season 3 was beginning of Smallville hitting its stride. Back in the day, for me, Smallville was appointment television. My loved ones knew not to call -- absolutely no interruptions!!
💛💙❤️💋💯
I watched season 2 within 25 hours. I like season 3 more, currently on ep 19). Love the nostalgia when I come across an episode I saw on TV when younger. Keep up the good work ❤
So Tom’s and Clark’s middle name is Joseph, awesome!
The use of the song “Walking In Memphis” is a nod to how Perry White is a big fan of Elvis Presley. This is especially shown in the Lane Smith portrayal of the character from the 90s tv show Lois and Clark The New Adventures of Superman.
There's a nice little reference to the Adventures of Superman (1952), where Perry keeps calling Sheriff Adams "Chief," and at the end of the scene she responds "don't call me chief," which is what Perry White in AoS would exclaim all the time after Jimmy, Lois, or Clark would call him "Chief." I remember when I first watched this episode of Smallville, I got a good laugh out of that moment between Perry and Sheriff Adams.
I really liked this episode.I Was so happy to see Clark and Perry interactions.
I saw like one year ago Better Call Saul, and now I am watching Smallville for the first time (I am in S5 right now) and when I saw that Chuck was an iconic character like Perry White I was just amazed of how good he was
This episode felt older and less teenage story, it was relatively slow but there were a lot of little hints about Clark's future as a hero and a journalist. I liked that they addressed the origins of Clark's powers from the sun, although he got to this conclusion quite fast.
I liked the scenes with Lex, he is less reserved but more on edge and more emotional. Michael acts it brilliantly.
Although I thought this episode was slow paced, for the easter eggs I will give it a 🌹
Next week a great episode can't wait!
One of my all time favorite episodes!
Tom has the same middle name as Clark Kent. That is kinda cool.
I’m so excited for this one!!! I rewatched Perry last week! I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on this one and your stories working with Michael McKean ^_^ So grateful for this podcast ❤ Thank you for blessing us week after week with it ❤️ Happy Talk Ville Wednesday ❤️☄️🌽
Hope you enjoy it!
@@TalkVillePodcast always ❤️ Thank you ❤️
They make a swoosh sound on Clark in the opening kitchen scene and Clark is still outside the door 😂
"Can you imagine having to Uber back then?"
Yes, Michael it's called a taxi.
I really enjoyed this episode. I have seen both Michael and Annette in this show and Law & Order and loved those episodes. I really liked how this episode was kind of a nod to Superman 2 when Lois jumps into the river at Niagara Falls and wants Clark to save her just like Perry did to Clark. The effects were great and it was great that we got to see Clark use all but his x-ray vision in this episode. I also liked that they introduced a flawed Perry White and even though we don't see it on screen we see that he grew into the great chief we all know him to be. I definitely agree with Tom and Ryan with 2 roses. Great episode and great performance by everyone.
I am just happy to hear Rosie use the term “dope”! Now I don’t feel as old 😂
Always a favorite episode of Mine. Loved how the show brought in a DC character such as Perry White. And how the story of this episode had Perry trying to expose Clark and his powers, but after he is saved by Clark without them Perry realises that he didn't want to tear down a good person and thus decides to change Also really enjoyed his interactions with the other characters such as Lex, Chloe and even Lana. Also a plus that he is married to Annette O'toole/Martha Kent in Real. Overall, very exciting and funny episode.😀😀🙏
you're the man Nick
@@TalkVillePodcast Thanks . As are you guys are always.😀❤❤❤
You know, Smallville wasn't Jeannot Szwarc's first foray into DC. He also directed the Supergirl movie (1984), with then newcomer Helen Slater, who shows up in later episodes of Smallville.
I look fwd to Talkville every week
Wednesday's are great due to Talkville
Michael forgot for a second that taxis existed before uber lol. I remember having to call the cab company and my drivers having to look on an actual map to find where I was going lol.
Am I the only one wondering why they allways wear a hat despite being inside of a room?😂
I love how this ep sets up the best storyline of the first 3 seasons of the show with the Luthors. 😍
8:29 Yes Michael, it's called a Taxi. 13:36 Lane Smith is my favorite Perry White, from the Lois & Clark show with Dean Cain.
"Perry" was one of the first Smallville episodes I watched with my Dad when it first aired. I kept going, "That's the guy from the Superman cartoon!" while my Dad explained Perry White was always Clark's boss in the comics.
Lol
Yay! Nice to hear another Aussie caller. I always liked Perry especially when Lois works with him.
