HAVE a Z8 and a Zf. Recently purchased a Z30 for the purpose of travel. Just traded in the Z30 as it missed focus roughly 50% of the shots. Maybe I had a bad copy. Ordered a Sony RX100 VII that should be here next week.

Spent a few evenings taking photos of my kid and dog on the couch to test the Z30 autofocus, so we are talking about stationary subjects. Fortunate to have a stable of Nikon Z lenes. The 16-50 kit was the worst for autofocus. Did a little better with the 2.8 zooms, and best with the 1.8 primes. My best hit rate came with single point, with the eye autofocus missing the majority of the time using any of the lenses.
This is my exact observation, at least until the Z f, gets a dedicated bird detection. The AF speed wont be as fast as the Z 8/9 since it’s not a stacked sensor, but it is fast enough. More pixels are welcome for birding for sure. But remember, the Z f can shoot in lower light and I find the image quality when it gets darker is better on the Z f. But I’m going to grab my Z 9 for any serious wildlife.
I have been using this concept for a while first with my D610 and D7000 then D750 with D500 and now XF with Zfc. I even have the CX Nikon1 V1 and J5 in the mix.
Oh almost the same here! Upgraded massively from APS-C d3500 to D500 and D700, z6 and zfc and latest v2 for bird photography (up to 810mm on longer end of DX telephoto) and v1 with 50mm eq. for take-away photo 🙂
What I find extraordinary about the Z30 is the size. With the full-frame Z 26 2.8, it is a powerful street kit...almost at the size of my old Ricoh GRIII, but even cheaper!! I have a Zf and a Z8 and will be selling my Zf, which is a tremendous camera in it's own right...but I find that the Z8 and Z30 provide a nice kit for me, with the Z8 being my workhorse/pro camera and the Z30 as my everyday carry, but also a back-up in a pinch. The only DX lenses I have are the 12-28 and 50-250...both are extraordinary! Thanks for showcasing the underrated Z30!
I don’t have a nikon z mount ff camera.. but im just wondering if the cameras have a crop sensor mode.. that would give you these same benefits without having to buy the z30
I’d use the Z6ii and Z8 in dx mode for better af performance. This camera is designed for vloggers. Great you CAN take some photos with it. Nikon has made 2 other models that provide the benefits of dx you are referring to. All they need to do is update them. When that happens I’ll bite. In the meantime I’ll use my for frames in dx mode. I have Z6ii, and I bought Z30 when it first went on sale. After a couple weeks I returned Z30 for two reasons: 1) it's meaningless, it doesn't really add anything to Z6ii in practical sense, there aren't any good APS-C lenses, and FF lenses don't work well because of cropping, the AF is pretty bad too, 2) shooting with it is a pain, ergonomics sucks and not having an EVF is a major flaw, the LCD is barely usable in daylight. If somebody has a need to zoom via cropping (mostly birders) they are better served by Z7/ii cameras and they will probably save money as well.
hello! love you're videos. Im a beginning photographer and I'm wondering your opinion on which camera I should get. Currently it's between the Canon r50 and the Nikon d750. I like the canon because of it's modern technology, beginner friendly interface, and it's sharp canon colors, but I like the Nikon because it has a larger ecosystem of lenses, it's full frame, and it would challenge me to take more time with my photos. I would also like a versatile camera that is good at videos, but I also don't need super high resolution 4k whatever specs. I'm also into landscape photography, animal photography, street photography, but not quite so much portrait photography. Anyways, thanks for taking the time to read this, and I'm also open to other suggestions in that price range!
If you're looking at r50 and d750 then a Z30 Will be the best choice budget wise and the quality on this little beast is a plus you won't lose as long as you are comfortable shooting without a viewfinder
I have a z6ii i upgraded from my z5 3/4 frame. Does this video kind of apply to the z5 as well? Meaning using my full frame lenses with my 5 increases focal length?
45mp sensors - z8, z9 - have 1000% usable crop modes at 19mp and even a m4/3 crop at 2.2x. So 3 cameras in one. I like the small size of th z30, but 40mm and 75mm effectives don't interest me

What lens were you using and firmware? The update to the firmware improved autofocus.

yes they do. you can go to dx mode on the ff, though the megapixels won't be the same but still usable

I am tempted to buy the Z50 I sold a year ago because I was expecting a mark 2 to come out by now.

The nikon z5 is a full frame sensor so this video wouldn't apply to that camera
