- The thyroid gland is a small organ that’s located in the front of the neck, wrapped around the windpipe aka the trachea. It is shaped like a butterfly, smaller in the middle with two wide wings that extend around the side of your throat. Your thyroid has an important job to do - releasing and controlling the levels of thyroid hormone. The main role of the thyroid hormone is to control many vital functions of your body including your metabolism. Thyroid disorders are very common. In fact, about 12% of people will experience abnormal thyroid function at some point during their lives, and an estimated 20 million people in the Unites States are suffering from some type of thyroid disorder.
Hypothyroidism, also called underactive thyroid, is when the thyroid gland doesn’t make enough thyroid hormones to meet your body’s needs. Recently confirmed by blood tests as having hypothyroidism, this video explains a lot that the doctors don't tell you is included with that. It makes me feel better knowing that there's a reason for all of these problems I have dealt with over the years. I have thyroid flares, so it was difficult to catch it on tests. I kept pushing my doctors and letting them know that they had to keep looking. Then boom! I went in to have my blood drawn when I was having a flare and they found it. Went in for further more crucial testing and it was confirmed through laboratory tests via blood work. Moral of the story, if you know something is wrong in your body, and you would know it because you're dealing with your body everyday, keep pushing until you get the help you need. You are 100% correct and I dealt with this for years I had to keep pushing the doctors until they found it. My symptoms were:
1.Extremely sleepy all day long
2. Freezing all the time

I researched it, diagnosed myself and went to the doctor and told him I think I have a thyroid problem. He looked at me ( female 5'5 120 lbs) and said YOU DON'T HAVE A THYROID PROBLEM. But I insisted to be tested. The results said I DIDN'T have a thyroid problem. I told the doctor, THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE, I WANT AN ANTIBODY TEST (like I said, I researched it). He tested me again and it came back POSITIVE. And he prescribed me some meds that I have been taking for 20yrs. I honestly think that he NEVER sent my blood in for testing the first time I asked him because he didn't think I had a thyroid problem. I had some related neck muscles issues later on, that he never really helped me with so I changed doctors, went to a internist/pain management doctor and she cured me in 6 wks.

@@blancavargas2062 Well not exactly cured. I was having acute neck, upper back pain which traveled through my arms to my fingers and across my chest including spasms. So, I had constricted muscles that were pinching my nerves near my cervical and thoracic spine. I was suffering for about 3 months. I was given muscle relaxers, pain meds and went to physical therapy within those 3 months. My Dr even injected SALINE into my neck which did nothing. I wasn't better. So I went to a new Dr., she first got me on a schedule of muscle stimulator sessions and ointment/moist heat packs which I had in her office. Did those for a month. I had improvement but still had pain. Then at the end of my program, she gave me about 3 steroid injections into various areas of my back. Then , I would say, 95% of my pain was gone. I know that my posture, stress, working on the computer and not stretching all contributed to this problem so I am very conscious of all these things that may bring it back. I did have a relapse about 10 years later, I went to the E.R. (cause it was that bad), they did some tests, gave me some meds in an IV. And I was all good in about 1hr. So , I say NOT EXACTLY cured because I could bring it back myself if I don't take care of myself.

ive struggled with these my entire life too. i finally caved after frustration trying to lose weight and saw a doctor. it took 4 doctors and around 3 years to finally have someone check my thyroid, i never even knew hashimotos existed. im still trying to find a good dose of levo, but at least there is a light at the end of the tunnel. im just sad i feel like i lost my youth to this.

I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism about 38 years ago. My Dr. told me that from now on, everything you eat will turn into fat. Now with having also Rheumatoid Arthritis which double the tiredness and weight gain with taking Prednisone. I am 5'1" and weigh over 200#. I feel at a loss to lose weight anymore. I've come to accept it and my husband loves me no matter what. I feel so thankful.
I have hypothyroidism too, I was diagnosed after my 2nd child in 1994. I did have borderline diabetes too about a year maybe, but recently I lost weight using Organic Unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar and reversed my borderline diabetes, this is done with diluting water to it. Think you supposed to have teaspoon or tablespoon , then dilute it with much water. I do eat Special K in the morning with my Silk Milk in it, followed by a peanut butter sandwich with wheat bread at lunch of what the dietician told me. I do eat pasta much with vegetables in it. The key is to have a high fiber diet with some protein in it with much water to drink. Even though the dietician wants me to have salads, sometimes I do, but I prefer vegetables in my pasta. My sister has same (past thyroid cancer, RA), she has lost weight by avoiding sugar and wheat. The prednisone drives hunger and has awful side effects.

Try taking all gluten out of your diet. Also, if you live somewhere where they add floride to the water, get a filter that will get rid of it. Most filters don't. Or buy floride free water.
In the states they add bromine to bread, so even be careful with gluten free and low carb breads.
Read Good Calories, Bad Calories. It will help you understand why you gain weight.

I have felt all of this since childhood but all my doctors ignored me. I am now 27 years old and my current primary doctor diagnosed me with this after doing a full blood panel. I can't believe it had to get to the point where it was interfering so much with my life that it couldn't be ignored anymore.

I fought with docs for 7 years to get tested. Eventually I got put down as a hypochondriac even though it was screamingly obvious there was something wrong with the amount of hair I had lost and the amount of weight I had gained even though I eat hardly anything. Went to a private testing service and sure enough hypothyroid.

You just saved my life. I have every symptom except hair loss probably due to taking Vit B complex daily as well as MSM (sulfur mineral) which builds hair. I wondered why I gained so much weight, had such horrible cramps during workouts and nights despite boosting magnesium, calcium, sodium, potassium, and fluids. Never imagined the thyroid was the cause! I got massive Charley horse cramps at night - so painful.
Also explains why my skin itches all the time, and I have poor memory and bad concentration.
One point I want to make that may help others. The thyroid gland is very dependent on the adrenal glands, and this is where the problem begins. Our modern day levels of stress on body are enormous. Our food nutrition is poor from depleted soils, over farming, processed foods, etc. So we are low on Vit B complex, minerals and multi vitamins. Adrenals feed on Vit B complex. When low, the adrenals are exhausted and functioning at half or low capacity. This affects the thyroid in turn. Boost adrenals, and you boost thyroid naturally without any drugs.
Take Vit B complex injections initially to raise levels fast. Take Vit B complex 100 mg twice daily at 8 am and 4 pm (no later). Take your Multi Vitamin/Mineral at 12 noon so you don't have too much B at one time. Space these out. Your pee will turn bright yellow due to excess leaving body, no problem.
Also start taking Adrenal Gland extract - Adrenergize by Enzymatic Therapy brand. This will directly boost your adrenal glands. Don't mix with B's - take in between. They also don't mix well with anything that stimulates your adrenal glands like the hormone Pregnenolone or DHEA - don't take same time.
Once your adrenal glands are working well, you will find chronic sinusitis, frequent colds, frequent flu or sickness a thing of the past. Its gone! I have every single symptom but I do not want to be on some kind of synthetic drug like syntax or Synthroid or whatever it’s called that you have to be on for the rest of your life. Also some of these medication cause weight gain. No thanks

Well I’ve suffered from all of the symptoms and my doctor consistent consistently told me that my thyroid was normal. It wasn’t until a month ago at WellMed when I saw another doctor that she took my blood work and told me that I did have a thyroid problem and she put me on medication. She also diagnosed me with insulin resistance and put me on Metformin. I go see her in three months so hope I start to feel better. The worst symptoms that I have is leg cramps muscle cramps almost every night. I also have memory loss foggy thinking dry skin and I’m always cold to name a few so I’m hoping that the thyroid medication she prescribed me will take away all of my symptoms.

Wow. I wish I had been able to see this information 20 years ago! Apparently, I have had the symptoms all my life; I was put on Levothyroxine just about 5 years ago and it has helped a lot. When my Dr. took my TSH it was 8, they put me on meds, but never really looked at why my thyroid wasn't working. It seems strange to treat symptoms without looking for the cause.
I have waisted thousands of dollars seeing specialist after specialist bc of my hypothyroidism. Most doctors want to put a Band-Aid on it and treat the symptoms, they are too lazy to do the deeper work and look for the cause. I worked in the medical industry for several years and know firsthand how doctors so often look for the easy answer or what will garnish the most money for them or kick back from big pharm, Instead of diving deeper. I was wondering what medicine are you on now and did it cause weight gain?

I have had hypothyroidism for 17 years and it has been managed on same dose since they found the right dose for me. My adrenal glands are failing and now my thyroid is getting worse and worse. I’m gaining weight even though I’m eating healthy and it’s so frustrating.
I had my thyroid removed 35 years ago over two operations and it took awhile for the doctor to get my meds right. I also have my adrenal gland checked every year because they found I have a gene disorder called mens 2. My family members have been checked and my brother, his daughter and my son have inherited this gene and have had their thyroids removed because of cancer risk. Mens 2 also affects the adrenal gland reason we have it checked. Not sure of your age or gender but I started gaining weight during my menopause and my doctor who checks my adrenal gland each year told me to cut my carbs right down. I was not producing the hormones anymore which help in breaking down carbs. I did this and my weight is back to normal.
I got my bloodwork results today after having it done for my annual physical. My thyroid levels were high and I was shocked at how much it made sense due to the symptoms I've been having. The more I research the more it makes sense. I've had dry skin for years, recent constipation, high cholesterol, depression, sleeping too much and muscle cramps. I'll start meds in 6 weeks if my levels are still high at that point
