Not specific to the example in this video but it's entirely possible along with many other chain of events. Surely as an officer you can see how a small infraction can cause serious consequences potentially killing someone. It's only a minor offence right so who cares? Well tell that to the families who's loved ones have been killed by a driver not paying attention for what is a BS ticket by your standards. Still got bigger fish to fry? Same applies to using a mobile phone while driving.

      Some offences are created to generate income for a city, police are rewarded for tickets brought in, not for doing right by the public that day.
      I can give you an example from where I live in Germany at the moment, I do street performing and they recently banned amplifiers, now people will get tickets for using an amp for a singer yet there is no punishment for the drummers down the street playing nearly twice the volume. What it does do it provide the police an extra way to increase revenue and profit from it but what it isn't is "fair"

That’s the audience who really wants it. But if you really want to drive large scale adoption of cycling, you need infrastructure like here in The Netherlands. Here it is safe to bike for everyone, thus you see everyone on the street on their transport bikes, bikes with children in the front, grandmas with ebikes etc. Of course it may be a higher investment to make but if you after all win more users for the system, that’s a win. And I guess, the US health system would benefit from it.

      @Jilly_Neutron Před 6 lety +4

      A yield would still allow the traffic to go that direction, just so long as they make sure no one else is coming the other direction. According to the city, though, no cyclists are allowed to go that direction, so they are still contradicting the sign.

  • @mrmaniac3

    The step down only seems to make sense for a bike coming off this platform. I wouldn't particularly want to ride a basic city bike up that sloped step, though I guess I'd do it anyway if I had no other option. Also, those arrows on the pavement are kind of counterintuitive, the direction they point is the direction traffic flow comes from, I see these on Dutch streets on Google street view. So when looking straight ahead, if the arrow points towards you, you should be in that lane. If they're pointing away from you, you're in oncoming traffic. A comment here from two years ago says that this issue is fixed, so I guess I have some street view to look at.

    A bit late to the conversation, but I feel like the fact that a bike making a minor traffic violation is magnitudes less problematic then a car doing the same is not understood by most Americans. Cause minor traffic violations don't harm anyone in 99% of cases. The point is that with a car that 1% most likely means hospitalization or death. With bikes on the other hand it's probably going to be a scrape or absolute worst case scenario a broken bone.
    Thus I personally believe that fining of cyclists should be a much rarer occurance, only happening when serious traffic violations are made. Oh and clear infrastructure is a must obv.

    if pedestrians are crossing, i don't think it's safe to go straight. The flow of traffic is directed towards the bridge because those people won't be going as fast as people going down the bridge with momentum. Hence, it's easier for cyclists who are going towards the bridge to stop for pedestrians crossing. Additionally, it's not really a straight path because you gotta swerve to the left in order to go through the gap.
    Also what happens if there are cyclists biking towards the bridge through the gap while someone coming off the bridge is going through the same gap? Wouldn't there be a collision? But yea the white arrows pointing towards the gap and wrong way sign are messed up.

    uh, one point about the "this looks like traffic is supposed to go in this direction" thing.
    That's a no right of way sign. Is that not common in the US? It means that people coming into the pointy end of the sign do not have right of way. It's totally standard in Europe.

  • @GabrielWeed
    @GabrielWeed Před 3 lety

    Not much thought went into that intersection for bikes, but they did put two wrong way signs. I don't enter the off-ramp to get onto the freeway. It might be "intuitive" to go straight, but at the end of the day, you did in fact disobey the traffic signs, which is technically against the law. I'm glad they fixed it

It might save you from being sued for ruining a passerby’s suit or dress. Sorry you had to go through that. You did handle the situation perfectly. The local congressman or city councilman would be the best person to go to for fixing that traffic hazard.

    Here is my opinion on this..
    The youtuber makes a valid point.. they should open up a passage for bikes coming down from the bridge. Its the obvious best solution for both safety and convenience to pedestrian and cyclists. Unfortunately Pedestrian got injured so cops have to intervene and shkw awareness
    2) To be honest big majority cyclists don't follow the traffic rules. I see this everyday and don't get me started with the E bikes. If you sit on a busy corner and watch cyclists pass you will see all the violations. They hardly ever stop at red lights. Some of these unfortunate cyclist death are also contributed to their own riding habits. Drivers, Pedestrian, cyclists, (E-bikes 😡) all have to do their part to assure the safety and rules of the road.

    • @Jompe69
      @Jompe69 Před 2 lety +2

    I'm sure you are a recognized person all around NYC, Casey. Cops are trained to recognize people. You have to deal with NYPD cops.
    Let me say, this cop DID NOT sound like a "nice guy"
    He sounded confrontational, aggravated and agitated
    He was clearly NOT de-escalating the encounter
    He brought up an injured pedestrian (unfounded)
    He brought up his animosity toward cyclists
    He accused YOU - by proxy - of disobeying traffic signals
    He challenged you at one point to show him a sign somewhere
    He seemed to be baiting YOU into a more strenuous confrontation
    You didn't take the bait
    I am dubious of cops intentions whenever I am forced to interact with them for these reasons above

      Eveyone - who wants to - should get the opportunity to spend a day doing a cop's job (enforcing the law).
      Its a no win situation because most of your encounters will be with people who are breaking the law and want to give you their reason for doing so, when instead they should be directing that information at the ones who have the power to relieve them of their obligation to follow the law, that is the Courts.
      Its a job I wouldn't take on because its destined to frustrate one tremendously, just imagine having to listen to complaints about you doing your job all day long.

    Hey Casey, im from the Netherlands where as you know many people ride bikes. The problem with this intersection is that you have way to much speed coming down the bridge. With that you could hurt people on the zebra path. In holland they often resolve this problem with a simple zig zag in front of the zebra path.
    I hope this was helpful. Keep up the good work 😊😊

    Sounds a lot like the design problem with speed limits. Some streets are designed in such a way that it makes people feel they can go a faster speed. Either design the street to be slower or increase the speed limit.

  • @GalangPaa
    @GalangPaa Před 2 lety

    it is a money trap dude. just simply money. They knew the flaw but surely enough it generates money. Many people would argue but intuitively the design must be a constant flow fluidly that you don't need to rethink what you suppose to do. For example the road designs in the US, you are in a 3 lane, and the outer lane becomes a right turn only at the next stop. it's alright if u live there but if you're new then you'll be forced to reroute, and people usually just try to reenter the left lane.. it is a public hazard, the fix is simple but because the infrastructure has been built, they don't want to fix it rather put traffic laws that confuse people. You have been to Dubai, UAE. I hope you noticed how fluid their highway, road, and streets are eg: turning to the right has a designed paved road 50 meters before the stoplight. That is not just a brilliant design but a public safety design.

  • @QemeH
    @QemeH Před 4 lety +1

    To be fair, there is a metal barrier - designed in a curve - that leades BOTH directions of the bike path to the right. If you come down the bridge ON the bike path (as opposed to the pedestrian walkway), you have to swerve to the left to even be able to go straight ahead. This plus the double red "wrong way" signs are really as clear an indication as you can get, that you are NOT supposed to go there. I'm with you on a lot of bike infrastructure being poorly planned and/or executed, but the "that's counterintuitive" argument really doesn't work here - there is a metal barrier leading you off to the right, that you have to AVOID to go straight. Maybe the city could paint the barrier?
    (Oh and these "arrows" on the ground are clearly give-way marks just like they are painted, like, everywhere. Every 4-way stop has these, they should be well known...)
