- I have tried to be very careful when doing all the projects related to this truck build. The engine rebuild, the axle truss welding, the frame fabrication. Well now I have really done it... you'll have to watch and see to figure out what i'm talking about, but let me know what you think.

Tap with tapping oil and also turn back to clean out chips, makes for a better thread and avoids breaking tap.

he has tapping oil in a bottle on the ground but probably just didn't show applying it during the tapping process. You can clearly see it @ 14:30 in the video
Yes, for every full revolution of the tap, back off 1/4 or 1/2 turn depending on how many flutes the tap has, to break and clear the chips.
Just think how much stronger those bigger studs will be. By the way I did not see if you were using it but you should always use some drilling and tapping oil when you are working in metal like that. Even the ATF fluid would work. It really makes both the drill and tap last longer and keeps the cutting edges cooler. Also less likely to have a tap break off. Like they say the difference between a 20 minute job and a 3 day job is a single snapped bolt (or tap).
@ 14:30 and a few other times you can see he has tapping oil right below the axle on the ground.. Probably just didn't show that portion of him adding as tapping
1, you should periodically add some cutting oil(any oil is better than no oil) as you run your tap in. 2. as you make a comple 360 with tap, back it off(counter clockwise) to break off your cuttings, that area between the cutter is for these pieces, Also, the top square of the tap, you can find a socket (a 12 point) that will fit it and make it easier. If you have an extra ratchet, you can weld a steel bar on the top, and have a two handle tapper ratchet.

Torque converter goes in the transmission then gets attached to the engine otherwise you won't engage the pump.
you should use tapping fluid when drilling . it does make it easier and good for the bit also.just a thought

While you are tapping anything it is best to go 1/2 to 3/4 turn and back off a 1/4 turn this breaks to chip and will prevent braking a tap. Tape lube is also a big help on tapes and drills. Enjoy your videos keep up the good work
forwards and backwards using a tap to keep the cutting edge clear! save wear on your big drill and use multiple different sized bits and work up to your full size.

thanks for showing the mistakes. we are all human and have had projects where things go wrong. its all part of the process and the experience.
First, doing all new pully's is a very good thing... coming from a professional mechanic here. On those studs... there are studs that fit the hole drilled and tapped that also are the right size for your cones and nuts that hold them in place... I would go to a place that sells quality nuts and bolts for their trade.. not a box store or say o'reilly's or napa... etc. I don't know the names anymore of said fastener stores. A grade eight stud will take this beating and come out ticking like a new watch.... I have made this rookie mistake, its just part of getting experience in the trade.... I am sure that its embarrassing to you. Laugh at it Trent! No harm or fowl as we are have to learn somewhere. On filling a torque converter.... a first filling insures the torque converter and transmission of not having a dry start but remember to always use same fluids on the seals before installing one so its not dry as well. One positive thing, Vaseline is always used if one doubts the process of any seal, even inside of automatic transmissions, we used vaseline for a lubricate.

They make sleeves to go into. Holes that are oversized put lock tight on them with the right size threads for your bolts

The lowest free spinning guide pulley with a sealed bearing seized up on mine twice due to off roading. I advise you always have an assembled spare and tools with you to swap it out. And a spare belt
Dude put the converter in the trans. If you try to put it on the flex plate then try to install the trans, you risk the chance of destroying the trans.
Sorry to hear about your setback on the knuckles. See if Heli-coils will fix this issue? FYI: New parts don't guarantee good parts, they just mean the parts are new. Made In USA is not the same as it used to be, sadly. I am sure most of us would agree that while the engine is out, replace all you can to cut down on down time, out in the trails. Good call!

Trent had a buddy with the same problem on his front end and all they done was drill out the cones to the size they needed. I suppose to this day it’s all still together I’ve not heard anything different.
I just called him and he said they pressed the cones down into the aluminum block and then with his drill press gently drilled them out and put it all back together with lock tight.
I am a 72 year old lady who doesn’t have a clue what you’re doing. BUT it is interesting as hell.
I love my Sundays and Mondays and Fridays so much more because of yawl!
Hopefully those were new flywheel bolts. If you had to do an extra turn it means they are TTY (torque to yield) bolts and are not reusable. Best of luck!
and trent when you tap you're suppose to turn back a quarter turn for the metal to free up and use tap liquid just like drilling .i know you wont listen but up to you ,you're the suppose to be expert
Hello Trent! If you need to use a larger tap than you have a handle for…..use 2 open end wrenches on the tap to form a makeshift tap handle. Really enjoy all of yours and Allies videos!!
Or weld a handle on the box end of the wrench!

Torque converter always goes in trans first ,to avoid breaking front pump in trans.destroying trans.there is 3 steps to fully engage torque converter in trans .you should not be able to put your fingers between torque converter and trans pump when converter is fully installed.torque converter should be aprox 1/4inch away from flexplate and spin freely when trans is bolted to motor.converter will slide against flex plate to bolt it to flexplate.
Trent you can go to a local machine shop and have studs made with 5/8th on one side and 1/2 or whatever you need on the other side.

I think that there are a few solutions to your over size taped holes, look into thread inserts not just “ Helicoils” but look for “Timeserts” many of aircraft parts use timeserts on all threaded holes and not just in aluminum parts also in steel parts. They are a threaded insert that has grooves on the out side and little keys that are driven in after it is in place to keep insert from backing out. There are various sizes available for the inside thread sizes. Available in a kit that will have the tap needed for the hole and a installation tool. Good luck!

It would depend on the torque needed on the stud bolts, but it possible you could have threaded helicoils into the oversized holes. As a rule of thumb, I always make sure the threads from the bolts match the threads of the tap by putting them together before I drill anything. Also, a second 10mm wrench would have given you the “T” handle you needed for the tap.
You can get studs that are different sizes on each end good luck
Good thing when rebuilding engine's is when the engine starts on 1st or 2nd turn of key if everything is primed up,
Little set backs can happen to anyone when on a project like your's, don't kick yourself.

Heli-Coils may be the answer for your Knuckles , maybe it's designed to be using them ? and thats why he sent the larger taps ? , they are used in the aircraft industry to increase the strength of a tapped hole in weaker metal, you did seem to be having little resistance when tapping the holes
Once you've completed all other projects around the property, with your Mechanical knowledge you could start a small repairs business to buy any new toys out there .Although projects are probably never finished . Happy Trails from 🇨🇦 to the 🇺🇸
Would it be easier to see if anyone sees a step down stud to fit. Or would it be too expensive for a machine shop to machine you 3 new studs? Just my thoughts. Alan
Good job replacing the compressor - I didn't do it and sure enough 3 months later it needed to be replaced.
Oh gosh fixing things can sometimes be a challenge, but I think you have been doing a really good job at everything. If you use two open end wrenches on the tap then you do have good pressure evenly to keep your tap straight.

always use oil when drilling or tapping, and when torking always cross tork never in a row, it avoids warping

Be glad it is an automatic transmission and not a manual! It can be really difficult lining up the throw out bearing, pressure plate, and the pilot shaft and then sliding the assembly together without bumping any one of these out of place mounting the transmission!! This is especially true when all of this is in the car and you are working under it laying on the ground!! IT COULD VERY EASILY BE MUCH WORSE!!!
I think it was very smart of you to go ahead and use a new ac compressor! It would have been the weakest link in the chain. If you can afford to have all new, use all new 👍
You could have new studs made to fit. So, the bottom half of stud would be 5/8 and the top would be what it needs to be. The machine shop can make the studs for you.
Just a thought Trent could you get some reducing studs so thread is bigger one end and the right size the other end to fit your arms. Here's hoping.
Maybe a possible cure for the studs is to get mild steel bolts that fit the threads you put in the knuckle. Install them with red Loctite, then cut the flush to the top of the knuckle. then drill and tap the correct threads into those. Given that the piece you are mounting is aluminum it would still be much stronger than the arm you are mounting.

I'm the same way with new parts it's peace of mind that's all but then that little voice says if it ain't broke don't fix it. I think that little voice is my Pap Pap telling me that or is it my conscious oh well looks good Trent.

LOL. but all's not lost, you can do a few things, one is your can get a bigger bolt, which is no big deal, and two, you can use a thread fix insert and make the hold the right size, which will work just fine. I did wonder why you didn't bolt on the part when you made the first hole so the part could guide you to make straight holes, but you've done this before or maybe not?
It's been a long time a lot of years since I worked on vehicles. It was easy back in the day without all the computer nonsense hooked up to the engine into the rest of the vehicle. It looks like you guys are doing a great job way to go! Keep on the speed you're working at and you'll soon have a brand new truck! The Trent and Brandon team are at it again!😊
When installing a tranny to an engine: get some thread-all that is the size of the bolts. Screw in 2 pieces of thread-all and use them as a guide. Just put the tranny bolt holes on the thread-all and slide the tranny up to the block. Install the rest of the bolts, remove the 2 pieces of thread-all and replace them with 2 more bolts. This will really help you when working on the tranny after the drivetrain is completely finished, if, for example, you ever have to replace a rear seal on the engine block, replace torque converter, ect.
PS. You may have to install heli-coils to fix the wrong size hole problem…
A little tidbit that may or may not come into play. When installing oil seals of any kind, the “lip” goes towards the pressure

An alternate solution is drill and tap for a Helicoil that is the right thread size for the right studs rather than modify the arm with bigger cone washer tapers making the arm weaker.
totally agree, replace all mechanical units with rebuild engine. even though new can fail, less likely. spent time building, want to enjoy before having to work on again. even though you know you will have to work on it again.
The issue is fixable. You know the right size.
use some oil with the tap ,,,good job you should start the motor on the floor
The A/C compressor is much better to get, with clutch on and filled with oil! Make sure you clean system and flush all A//C Components. Please take it from the biggest Toyota fan, change A/C Condenser et to later !oo, and the drier! It will save that new compressor! All those components are crucial to keep your system running for years! If you dont replace all of those components , you will be sorry later, and much harder to get to.

Suuuuucks man. I HATE tapping. For reasons like that. Engine looks beast and I totally think replacing ALTe, AC Comp and PS and WP any time you do a major rebuild like that is worth it 2 to 3x.

The hole on the top of any tap is to help put it in straight ie put a pin on top under pressure it keeps it starlight, stage taps would have worked better
It's only echoing on your end Trent, we just hear it as your voice suddenly sounds better. I see a trend with the channels I watch, apologies as if you did something wrong when in fact you haven't. Anyone that's here, probably doesn't care about a noise(s) here and there although you apologize for it a lot. So, chill out and stop with the apologizes and get on with it.
Always install converter into transmission before bolting on engine!!!!!
You could use one of those thread inserts if it fits. Helicoil
