CUTTING MY BODY INTO PIECES!!!

  • I've tried really hard to keep as much of this truck as I could but it seems like every stage I get to, more and more stuff gets thrown out, cut off, or changed all together. Today is no different and I'll be removing and throwing away quite a bit but I'm also cutting my body into pieces. Hopefully this isn't a mistake.. I guess we'll see.

About properly correcting issues; that was one of the hardest things to teach as the Work Center Supervisor on my ship. Even though it takes longer today, it will take less time over the longhaul. And the piece of mind knowing something is 100% correct is a great feeling.

Just a wee bit of advice Trent ,always when mig welding have the material as clean as pos ,always grind the millscale off or the weld wil have poor penetration and the weld will be weak . Also avoid welding downhill (poor penetration) always weld uphill for a way stronger weld . Great build by the way ,really enjoying it .

Tip: welding... always run vertical up. Especially on structural components.
Tip 2: Your crossmember shouldn't be welded in solid, you should have it be removable for future service. The last thing you want to do is start a transmission/transfer case R&R with a saw or grinder to cut out your crossmember.

I would build yourself a template out of cardboard for the floor section and put your new seat in to make sure everything fits. You can use the template for your plasma table. I would consider making the floor out of something a little sturdier then sheet metal. I think that mounting bar you cut through for the front of your factory seat may have doubled as a structural support.

Not sure if you'll have room(going further up) for your Trans mount, but, there isn't any reason that the mounts have to be straight across from each other, the drive shaft will be going down as it moves toward the front, so you could mover the drivers side of the mount towards the front and have it run at an angle from one side to the other. Also, I'd leave it as is until you get your axles, wheels and tires on, so you can cycle the suspension to see where you will need to move your trans mount or anything else

get an extra roll of weldingwire (do pack it so moisture and air cannot get to it and cause it to rust) , and while youre at it get a spare bottle of shielding gas too as these allways run out at night over the weekend when nothing is opened and youre holding one end of a long tube while the other end is allready tacked in , with the extra stuff you can switch to a freshy and put the stuff on the shoppinglist for whenever the next time youre in town will be , having some spare consumables like weldingtips and maibe some o rings and a liner for the mig gun might be a good idea as well the consumables probably set you back about 30 bucks but saves you having to stop and wait for the stores to open and do an unsceduled shopping run
as for moving the project uot from between the lift posts , wat you can do is make some casters on a stick , temporarily weld or clamp them to the 4 frame ends so you can roll the whole thing around some , setting it down on a set of car moving dollies with axlestands on them would work too though a little more janky
sumting i seen done to make a nice looking cover for the hole where the transfercase goes intoo you can try to find the metal bucket for a wheelbarrow , these things have multiple compound bends and you can cut and weld those and made the hump in the floor look factory , another option would be to go to the wreckingyard with some carboard templates for height and length you need and the angle grinder and sawsall then start hacking piecec of roof section pieces of the hood of older trucks and corners / metal bumpers out of cars that can be made to fit the floor
about the transmissionmount , maibe you can fit a piece of thickwal pipe in there cut in half , basicly a sort of c notch loweringkit for a minitruck frame , think you can cut a piece out and weld it where its sitting , might need to cut another square of floor out to get the notch to sit high enough to clear the driveshaft

I would cover that windshield w a sheet of cardboard… grinding inside the car while the windshield is in will b regretted quickly.
