    Great video! As guy that sells HomeKit products, I’m always trying to share the usefulness of these apps with my customers. It’s always so hard to explain them all. This will be my go-to link to share with them. Thank you!

    Great video, Shane. As always. The timing is perfect. I started my SmartHome in November with a HomePod Mini and an Eve Smart Plug for the Christmas tree. I
 went a little nuts and now have well over 100 devices. Management is a big part of my SmartHome day to day, so I found two of the apps you mentioned to look like great additions (Controller and HomeDevices apps). Battery management alone can take a few hours once a month without a good way to manage the process.
    By the way, a nod to your sponsor: I’ve been using the Trend Micro Station to monitor and protect my entire home network, including the smart devices with internet access and it’s been great. It has already stopped two attacks that otherwise would have been bad news.

    Awesome overview Shane.
    Can’t agree more with the ‘organization’ piece. Having a properly organized structure for naming, Rooms and Groups makes the Smart Home experience SO much better

    Properly setting-up your Family/Home framework in regards to AppleIDs is also (ultimately?) quite important in my opinion.
    Thanks for the content. Good stuff as usual.

    Great video as always! Thanks for the tips! Quick question: so, for Christmas 🎄 lights you just delete them from HomeKit? As well as seasonal specific. Lights? This past year was my the first time using Twinkly lights which are all stored in boxes now, waiting for Christmas
 but of course they still appear in my home app and when I tell Siri to turn everything off, it keep saying that “some accessories do not response” and it’s because of that
 what do you do? Is there a way to hide it or you just delete them every year and add them again later?

    The Apple Notes app is the best place to make a folder with automatic iCloud backup, containing Notes with Scans of all your HomeKit device scan codes. And it’s free and simple! And you can lock your Notes!

    Hi Shane, I follow you about 2 years I’m from Portugal and I have few houses with homekit.
    But in my main house I have outdoor shades (Douglas, with somfy motor) and I want protect them from wind, it’s possible set some kind of shortcut with the weather app ? For example if it’s too windy, more then 40 km per hour the shades will open automatically ? By the way this tips were awesome 👏 thanks and continue make this videos ,hugs from Portugal đŸ‡”đŸ‡č

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  Pƙed 2 lety +1

      Hey thanks for watching! Yes you should be able to do that. You can create a new home automation and "convert to shortcut." From there you can get the current weather conditions and "IF" the wind is too high, open the shades.

    Great helpful video! I have a question about homekit. I recently started my homekit journey and bought a HomePod Mini, a nanoleaf lightstrip and 3 nanoleaf lightbulbs and an Eve doorsensor. All working under thread. All working great separately but automations are not working. Even the most simple automation 'x-bulb goes on after door opens' is not working. If I use the test-button it works. Google says a lot of people have these problems and seem to be causing by something in iOS15. Do you know a solution for this issue?

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  Pƙed 2 lety

      Thanks Willem. I don't know the solution for sure as it could be different things. I'll be releasing a video soon on ways to troubleshoot things like this. But if I were you, I'd start by restarting my homekit hub(s). Maybe restarting your iOS devices too. Often when you get strange behavior with automations, restarting your homekit hubs can fix things.

  • @Polkster13
    @Polkster13 Pƙed 2 lety

    Tip#2 You can also create a note and store a picture of the HomeKit code in it. Then these are backed up in the iCloud. Then when setting the device back up, you can use this picture to scan the code in without having to manually enter the code.

    Awesome video as always!! I have a question. Is it posible to stop the annoying question from HomeKit about if I want to run the automation unlocking the front door when I arrive? Thank you in advance!!

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  Pƙed 2 lety +1

      Thanks Ro! Yes... and no. That is a security feature put in place by Apple. You have to authenticate any "secure" accessories, like door locks, garage doors, etc, when using in automations.
      There is a workaround if you wanted to go this route. I discussed the concept at 11:10 this older video: czcams.com/video/1BpcvCUw_kc/video.html
      Essentially you can use another accessory, such as a smart plug or a dummy switch, to automate on when coming home. Then another automation that unlocks the door when that switch is turned on. No authentication required.

    Shane Hi,
    I am experiencing (couple of weeks now) the “no response” problem for sll my homekit accessories. They are a mix of legrand (netatmo) rolling shutters and tradfri (ikea) lights. The hub is a 4k Apple TV.
    WiFi is ok and the router is new (installed the last 6 months). The shutters are working via their native app (Control) and tradfri lights also work when I am using ikea app.
    Devices are running on their latest software version and my apple id has 2 favtor authentication enabled. Any ideas as to where start looking?
    Already re-started my Apple TV (no result) and my router restart did not help either. Any advice?

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  Pƙed 2 lety

      Hey Tomas, it seems like a homekit issue. If. you're HomeKit hubs and all iOS devices are running the latest firmware and have all been restarted, it's possible there is some settings in your router that could be causing issues with homekit. Also signing out and back in to iCloud on hubs and iOS devices might be worth trying.
      Here is my video on dealing with "No response." It can be a tricky thing to troubleshoot sometimes: czcams.com/video/pThVayZwvSM/video.html

    I got robbed at knifepoint in my home. They stole routers, Mac’s, iPhones, iPads, bridges and everything! It’s taken years to get over the experience. But I feel that I’m doing better than I was back then with my house and personal life! It’s handy to keep the codes in case something like that happens. I had to delete my entire home and re-add everything that was in my home. I used to use Alexa but I now use HomeKit and I have a shortcut so that if I say “help” on my HomePod or phone it will send a message to all of my family that I need help at whatever address I am at. You can’t do that with Alexa.

They took over £10,000 of stuff from my home. Yeah I’m British.
