Great video! As guy that sells HomeKit products, Iâm always trying to share the usefulness of these apps with my customers. Itâs always so hard to explain them all. This will be my go-to link to share with them. Thank you!
Thanks George! đ I appreciate that very much!
Love your videos Shane! So glad I came across them as I started building out my own Smart Home/Apartment! I (and I'm sure everyone else) really appreciate the amount of time you put into your product reviews and tips for HomeKit users!
Thank you Sam! I really appreciate the support.
Tip#3 Controller app also allows you to do a full backup of your HomeKit app. Love it.
Edit: Just saw you covered this in Tip#5.
Definitely need to check out some of these apps. Thanks for a great video.
Great video, Shane. As always. The timing is perfect. I started my SmartHome in November with a HomePod Mini and an Eve Smart Plug for the Christmas tree. I⊠went a little nuts and now have well over 100 devices. Management is a big part of my SmartHome day to day, so I found two of the apps you mentioned to look like great additions (Controller and HomeDevices apps). Battery management alone can take a few hours once a month without a good way to manage the process.
By the way, a nod to your sponsor: Iâve been using the Trend Micro Station to monitor and protect my entire home network, including the smart devices with internet access and itâs been great. It has already stopped two attacks that otherwise would have been bad news.
Wow already over 100 devices.! You did go a little nuts. I love it! I'm glad the video was helpful. Also great to hear another satisfied user of Trend Micro. Thanks for sharing!
Great video Shane! The HomeKit maintenance hits home for me. With all the testing, scenes, automations etc, things can get out of control quickly and impact your Smart Home performance. Excellent tips!
Thanks Brad!
Awesome overview Shane.
Canât agree more with the âorganizationâ piece. Having a properly organized structure for naming, Rooms and Groups makes the Smart Home experience SO much betterâŠ
Properly setting-up your Family/Home framework in regards to AppleIDs is also (ultimately?) quite important in my opinion.
Thanks for the content. Good stuff as usual.
Agreed Brad
Thanks Brad!
Excellent set of tips Shane! thank you very much.
Thanks for watching Gregg!
Great video as always! Thanks for the tips! Quick question: so, for Christmas đ lights you just delete them from HomeKit? As well as seasonal specific. Lights? This past year was my the first time using Twinkly lights which are all stored in boxes now, waiting for Christmas⊠but of course they still appear in my home app and when I tell Siri to turn everything off, it keep saying that âsome accessories do not responseâ and itâs because of that⊠what do you do? Is there a way to hide it or you just delete them every year and add them again later?
Hey Shane! Thanks for always making helpful videos that have caused me to expand my HomeKit experience!
Hey Melissa, thanks for watching. Iâm very glad the videos have been helpful!
Thanks, Shane for this great video. It is really useful and informative. đđœ
Thanks Tom!
I am considering Notes or even 1Password to keep my QR codes to eliminate another app. Thanks for the motivation to do this! Love your content.
Thanks Chuck!
Sold me on home pass, my Wemo light switches need reset way too often requiring popping the light switch covers to get to the codes. I had been putting them into notes.
The tip about adding things via the eve app to allow you to send the HomeKit code directly to the homepass app is awesome. All of them are great, but that one was a surprise bonus to me!
Great, I'm glad the video was helpful. Thanks for watching!
Great video, thank you Shane!
Thanks for watching!
Hi Shane, good information. Could you do a walk thru on the home plus 5 app. How to set up how it integrates whoosh home kit. How you would use it in your daily life
Another excellent video Shane, thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Damn you really dropped some gems on this one! Keep up the good work. Thanks.
Thanks Renaldo!
This was a great video. Great knowledge share
Thanks for watching Marcus!
The Apple Notes app is the best place to make a folder with automatic iCloud backup, containing Notes with Scans of all your HomeKit device scan codes. And itâs free and simple! And you can lock your Notes!
Hi Shane, I follow you about 2 years Iâm from Portugal and I have few houses with homekit.
But in my main house I have outdoor shades (Douglas, with somfy motor) and I want protect them from wind, itâs possible set some kind of shortcut with the weather app ? For example if itâs too windy, more then 40 km per hour the shades will open automatically ? By the way this tips were awesome đ thanks and continue make this videos ,hugs from Portugal đ”đč
Hey thanks for watching! Yes you should be able to do that. You can create a new home automation and "convert to shortcut." From there you can get the current weather conditions and "IF" the wind is too high, open the shades.
@@ShaneCreates Thanks Shane đȘđ» keep going
Great helpful video! I have a question about homekit. I recently started my homekit journey and bought a HomePod Mini, a nanoleaf lightstrip and 3 nanoleaf lightbulbs and an Eve doorsensor. All working under thread. All working great separately but automations are not working. Even the most simple automation 'x-bulb goes on after door opens' is not working. If I use the test-button it works. Google says a lot of people have these problems and seem to be causing by something in iOS15. Do you know a solution for this issue?
Thanks Willem. I don't know the solution for sure as it could be different things. I'll be releasing a video soon on ways to troubleshoot things like this. But if I were you, I'd start by restarting my homekit hub(s). Maybe restarting your iOS devices too. Often when you get strange behavior with automations, restarting your homekit hubs can fix things.
Tip#2 You can also create a note and store a picture of the HomeKit code in it. Then these are backed up in the iCloud. Then when setting the device back up, you can use this picture to scan the code in without having to manually enter the code.
Yes, that would certainly work too.
Awesome video as always!! I have a question. Is it posible to stop the annoying question from HomeKit about if I want to run the automation unlocking the front door when I arrive? Thank you in advance!!
Thanks Ro! Yes... and no. That is a security feature put in place by Apple. You have to authenticate any "secure" accessories, like door locks, garage doors, etc, when using in automations.
There is a workaround if you wanted to go this route. I discussed the concept at 11:10 this older video: czcams.com/video/1BpcvCUw_kc/video.html
Essentially you can use another accessory, such as a smart plug or a dummy switch, to automate on when coming home. Then another automation that unlocks the door when that switch is turned on. No authentication required.
@@ShaneCreates thank you đđŒ
Shane Hi,
I am experiencing (couple of weeks now) the âno responseâ problem for sll my homekit accessories. They are a mix of legrand (netatmo) rolling shutters and tradfri (ikea) lights. The hub is a 4k Apple TV.
WiFi is ok and the router is new (installed the last 6 months). The shutters are working via their native app (Control) and tradfri lights also work when I am using ikea app.
Devices are running on their latest software version and my apple id has 2 favtor authentication enabled. Any ideas as to where start looking?
Already re-started my Apple TV (no result) and my router restart did not help either. Any advice?
Hey Tomas, it seems like a homekit issue. If. you're HomeKit hubs and all iOS devices are running the latest firmware and have all been restarted, it's possible there is some settings in your router that could be causing issues with homekit. Also signing out and back in to iCloud on hubs and iOS devices might be worth trying.
Here is my video on dealing with "No response." It can be a tricky thing to troubleshoot sometimes: czcams.com/video/pThVayZwvSM/video.html
@@ShaneCreates It took an Apple TV firmware update, setting the Apple TV as Hub again, disconnecting and reconnecting from HomeKit to make it run again!!
So So relieved!
Many Thanks Shane...
Is there any way to find out what references any given scene ?
What do you mean?
@@ShaneCreates Lets say I've been experimenting with HomeKit and created a number of scenes and automations. I want to know if I have any scenes which are never used by any automation. Ideally I would like to be able to see where a scene is references - which automations - if any use it ?

I got robbed at knifepoint in my home. They stole routers, Macâs, iPhones, iPads, bridges and everything! Itâs taken years to get over the experience. But I feel that Iâm doing better than I was back then with my house and personal life! Itâs handy to keep the codes in case something like that happens. I had to delete my entire home and re-add everything that was in my home. I used to use Alexa but I now use HomeKit and I have a shortcut so that if I say âhelpâ on my HomePod or phone it will send a message to all of my family that I need help at whatever address I am at. You canât do that with Alexa.
See you on Wednesday Shane đđ»
Wow Iâm sorry you had to experience something like that. Glad to hear you are doing well these days. Thatâs a really good use of shortcuts. Hopefully something youâll never have to use, but great to have set up just in case. Thanks for sharing.
@@ShaneCreates yeah was horrible bro. Thatâs exactly why I made that shortcut. Itâs very similar to the being pulled over shortcut. I was thinking that I should have one before that night but hadnât ended up doing it. But after I got a new phone I made the shortcut. Stupid drug addicts need to get a life. They took over ÂŁ10,000 of stuff from my home. Yeah Iâm British.
Instead of downloading the Homepass app, I just took photos of each code, labeled them and organized them into an Album. đ
That could work too. Thanks for the tip!
amazing video! A*
