Why is piety a fool? He could have easily defeated the alliance fleet easily if his hands weren’t tied by palpatine, who foolishly decided to turn the most important battle of the war into a shock and awe show to try and turn Luke to the darkside.
He positioned his Super Star Destroyer too close to the Death Star so when his ship lost power from the A Wing kamikaze, the Death Stars gravitational field pulled it down causing it to crash into the space station.
Crazy thing is too, is that Piett was under strict orders from the Emperor himself the entirety of the battle. Perhaps if he had been granted freedom of command, we would have a very different outcome for the Executor

Since the death Star had its own gravity field, the superstar destroyer had to do some technical stuff and when they took out the engines of the superstar destroyer they lost control and well you know how gravity works

The corridor crew claims the relative size of the death star, you should see the curvature of the station; at least in the movie where the crash was seen farther away

Based on the scene of the Executor crashing, the Death Star II would have been at least 900 Km in diameter. But based on the other scenes where the shuttle lands in one of the small bays/hangars in the equatorial trench, the size has been calculated to be between 160 to a bit over 200 Km in diameter, but at that scale, the Executor crashing would have been very different and an entire section of the Death Star would have been destroyed.
Just imagime how much better off the Empire would've been if they built more of those and not a damn orb. That way instead of destroying a planet they could glass it with an orbital bombardment, then strip mine the resources at least...
The Empire was actually a Sith Empire in all but name; Sidious wanted to rule it with terror and annihilation; for him, weapons of mass obliteration like the Death Star made sense. As much as I dislike the ST, the clone of Sidious of IX shows his true colors.
Illum was the Planet where the Empire got their material for the most ships and weapons. That's why there is a huge hole on the planet's equator, which was later used for the Starkiller base.

The Imperials built their ships for Ship to Ship combat. Their massive turbolasers struggle to hit small fighters. The main weakness of ISDs is that their shield generators are those large sphere's on top. When those are destroyed the ship loses shields. The A-Wing pilot recognized this and kamikazed the bridge.

I always find the designs of these Star Destroyers ridiculous. For a ship that scale and demanding such large amount of resources, they have to place the command bridge and crucial parts at the weakest spots possible.

Whereas the speed of the impact wasnt high enough to cause lethal damage, it sure as hell would've put a HUGE crater in the surface on par with the size of the super laser dish.
If we were to be like sequel trilogy haters, we would be whining about why Executor fell on the front when the gravity would've pulled it from the rear where the ship is heavier. But don't worry, plot holes and such mistakes don't exist unless they are in ST.
What’s my guy waffling on about It was the 80s and SW was at first pretty low budget. SW is the biggest movie franchise of all time now and is owned by a billion dollar company with world class actors, so they shouldn’t be making the same mistakes. And plus, this is one minor issue. The entire ST is basically one big plot inconsistency.
