    Just got a Super Crush 100 yesterday. As with everyone else I wanted a Rockerverb, but couldn't justify the Money. I Plugged it in, and instantly liked it, Clean, Dirty. Sounds awesome. Will eventually get an EQ pedal. It will be making its live debut tonight.

    I actually ended up buying a Super Crush 100 after sitting in a shop and doing this exact test for myself. I've always wanted a Rockerverb, but I couldn't justify paying so much more for a massively heavier amp to take to gigs. I'm definitely not stoked on the DI sound from the SC but that's really my only complaint.

      Yeah the built in cab sim on this is not good at all. Definitely have an IR. If you like all Orange sound, Orange and Celestion actually partnered to put out Orange official cab IRs. Full pack for $40 or $12 each. Or take your chances with other IRs out there but I like the idea of it being done by the source.

    Super Crush has a slightly faster response. To be expected and maybe even an advantage for metal/speed metal. Great job evening them both out. I agree the OR series amps get the overall "Orange Sound" win. I use the Super Crush with two single 12" Orange closed-back cabs with Vintage 30's.

    The Super Crush sounds great, but the Rockerverb MKii has something to the tone that is just really special IMO. I have the 100W version, and I would highly recommend running an EQ pedal in the loop to boost some high mids, and you'll find that it gets extra aggressive, has more presence and really tights up the gain. I love it unboosted and boosted, but if you want more highs, tightness, aggression and more articulation, an EQ pedal like the Boss GE7 takes it there.

      any EQ pedal recommendations ?

    • @mountainpeakcloud8442
      @mountainpeakcloud8442 Před rokem +1

      @@C0nnie I've only tried 2 EQ pedals with the MKii, the Boss GE7 and the Orange Two Stroke. Both are good in different ways. The GE7 sounds good in the loop, where as the Two Stroke sounds good in front. I found the GE7 to significantly change the tone in the loop, was a bit more aggressive, but had a slightly more harsh sound, where as the Two Stroke was more subtle, but sounded smoother, and seems to sound a bit more "natural". I didn't like the GE7 in front, and I didn't like the Two Stroke in the loop. It depends on what you're going for. If you want to be able to drastically alter the tone of your amp, I would go for the GE7 (there are modded versions which are supposed to be more quiet), but if you like the general tone of your amp, but want to make some subtle changes, the Two Stroke is perfect. The GE7 is easier to use because it's a graphics EQ, where as the Two Stroke has a steeper learning curve, being a parametric EQ (took me a while to learn how to dial in the tone I was looking for).
      Saying all that, I solely use the Two Stroke now, and have it on all the time. I came to the conclusion that you buy an Orange for that low mids sound, and if you're trying to drastically change the sound, you're probably better off with another amp. I decided to embrace that low mids, and just use the Two Stroke to tweak it a little to make it cut more, without altering the character of the amp.
      Hope this helps.

    Did you boost the master volume and used the channel volume to taste to add resonance? Yo, Kyle if you said the Super Crush 100 was the best solid state amp you have tried, then I think you still have to try the Quilter Overdrive 200 or 202 amps. @rocketpigrecords3719 Před rokem +2

      Seconded

    • @johnnyphoney5669
      @johnnyphoney5669 Před rokem +1

      I’m owning Quilter March 3. I knew what I was going to buy, I bought it because of the PA to use as a pedal platform (I have decent tube preamp pedals). The PA is some black magic in the solid state world, it’s high impedance (like a tube amp) unlike conventional solid state PA which is low impedance. Typical solid state PA just ignores the speaker but a tube amp interacts with it, reacting to the impedance change, resulting in some spiked high harmonics, the curve is getting weird. You can’t just boost some frequencies as achieve the same result as you would get from a tube amp, and this stuff happens in PA, not in the preamp section. Quilter made their class-D solid state PA to operate like a tube PA, and that’s the most interesting part for me. The builtin-in preamps are just not doing it, they’re dark, but as you try to boost the treble it immediately gets flobby and squishy. So I completely remove the gain from the Quilter preamp, leaving a lot of headroom, darken the treble and use my pedals in front of it setting them bright and loud. And that really works for me. I think using Quilter stuff as-is you wouldn’t even get close to the high-gain application alone. But with a good preamp pedal it might give you results other solid state amp just can’t achieve, because of the PA. “Conventional” solid-state PA just puts out the speaker out of the equation. Whatever speaker of dummy load you use the curve stays the same. It’s the opposite with tube PAs (and Quilter PAs), every speaker has its own dynamic impact on the curve. And the amazing part is that it weighs nothing. Mach 3 is like a 1.9kg, the Tone Block is around 1.5kg, I can lift it with a couple of fingers with one hand. I can just throw it into my gig bag. And it’s a fricking 200W tube-equivalent power (as loud as a tube amp), more than you would ever need.
      In short: Quilter amps are the most light-weight while being the most powerful, providing the tube-equivalent power (in fact they even reserve 400W for the tube-ish spikes internally, providing you nominal 200W). I might be wrong but I think they are the only solid-state PAs that operate like a tube PA (being reactive to the speaker impedance changes). But built-in preamps are definitely not the best in the market and I think they would probably give a wrong impression of what these amps can really do.
      I really wanted a Quilter amp because I wanted an amp being portable (while the PA be a tube-like). Preamps are kind of easy to carry around. I have tube preamps on the board, they weigh like a regular pedal (maybe a bit more, because of the steel case), being real front-end replica of an amp, using upping to high-voltage converters inside. But a separate tube PA (Mooer Tube Engine for instance) of like 20W already weighs around 7-8kg. Engl’s stereo 50Wx2 tube PA weighs 12kg. Quilter Tone Block weighs 1.4kg and it’s 200W, and it’s significanlty smaller.
      Orange SC100 is interesting, I really want to try one but mind even being solid-state it still weighs like 14kg. Pretty heavy, not really that much lighter than a tube amp. I wish Orange would make a separate Super Crush preamp pedal that would be much lighter that can be used with the Pedal Baby 100 (which AFAIK is the PA of the Super Crush 100) which is only 3.2kg. That would be much more portable.

      By the way, the only two solid-state amps (or rather brands that make them) that I’ve heard so far and I definitely liked and even considered as an alternative to a tube amp are the Quilter stuff and Orange Crush series. Ones that do sound like a tube amp.

      @@johnnyphoney5669 Hey John, thanks for the response. That's crazy because I took the plunge and bought a Mach 3 Aviator head too. I figured I would rather have a pedal platform so I can switch different tones on the fly vs getting stuck with one amp one tone like how Orange sounds like Orange and Boogie sounds like Boogie etc.
      I was inspired by Neige of Alcest who uses a JMP as a pedal platform and uses the Bogner Red pedal and the Fulltone OCD for high gain stuff.
      I use the Walrus Eras in front of the Plexi channel for high gain stuff and keep the amp setting in a clean and scooped sound and it works. My EQ on the amp looks like 11, 9 and 1 o'clock and the gain on 9 o'clock.
      I tried using the Mach 3's own distortion with a boost and it ended up sounded like Judas Priest "Victim of Changes". Very Old School sounding. But for more modern you need a separate distortion.
      I also use the GupTech PEDEQ to add presence and wow it opens up the amp to modern times. I haven't tried using the Eras as a preamp in the FX return cuz right now I am happy with this set up at the moment.
      I boost the Eras in the front as well it sounds great IMO.
      I think Kyle would dig the Overdrive 202 since he likes amps that have their own high gain on tap, but good to know great minds think alike on the Mach 3.

Old celestion speakers and new eminence speakers, peavey 5150 cabinet, Mesa over sized cabinet and nothing sounded as good as the old B-52 speakers in an old carpeted 412 cabinet! In the back of my mind I'm wondering if the fact queensryche owned and played through these speakers has any thing to do with it !? I doubt it but you never know, maybe their powerful amps and jams opens up the speakers to better tone !?

    Hey Kyle, I don't know if you'll read this but here goes nothing... One observation I made is that you're a big fan of the Duncan Distortion pickups. I've played these before and I always found the low end generally lacking. In fact I've noticed that generally in most Seymour Duncan pickups outside of the Invader. Even the 59 seems to be meatier, while being obviously much lower output than the Distortion or the JB. They seem to be very upper mid and treble focused. Maybe a Duncan Custom? Is there any way you could show a demo with some other pickups, like for instance a Dimarzio Super Distortion? Those put out way more lows and low mids but don't have the same high frequency profile as a lot of Duncans. Also, and I know this is probably blasphemy to a lot of people, but Vintage 30's really don't have a lot of low end compared to something like a Celestion G12T75, or even a lot of Eminence speakers. Or the Jensens in something like a Twin Reverb for that matter. I find British amps really like the G12T75 because the amps are more mid focused, and the low end on that speaker, especially the older ones, is definitely bigger than a Vintage 30. Thoughts? Opinions? From one Kyle to another (don't let the handle fool you) you make great content. Keep up the good work! Liked and subscribed.

    • @belligerentamateur
      @belligerentamateur  Před 9 měsíci

      hey dude, I use the pickups and speakers I do in these demos because they're "industry standards" and most people know what they sound like, so when they hear my demos, the differences they're hearing is in the amp and not in me having some sort of unique signal chain. That said, I've never had issues getting the low end out of these pickups and speakers using my go to amps like the 5150, Splawn Quick Rod, mesa rectifiers, etc, and I don't want more low end from my pickups and speakers because they are generally darker and harder to eq in the brighter frequencies when they're not there to begin with.

    I hope you get to use it with your band, it would be interesting to see how it would compare to say the 5150 Iconic. I realize the 5150 cost twice as much but I am curious how the super crush would stack up to the iconic with both being played through 4 x 12s. My fear is that it won't cut through against a 100 watt tube half stack in a live setting. Every time I buy something that may be marginal, I regret it later.

    • @K707OR30
      @K707OR30 Před rokem +2

      I have both. I wish I could tell you which one to buy honestly but they’re so different. The iconic has way more low end if you want it and while it sounds great it just won’t get that really boxy midrange the Orange will. Which in my opinion isn’t a bad thing they’re just different. The Super Crush just doesn’t have the low end though on the dirty channel. PLENTY of low end on the clean channel but barely any on the dirty channel even when it’s dimed, which kind of drives me insane honestly. I know Kyle says it can be fixed with an EQ in the loop but I’ve done that and it still just doesn’t quite get there for me at least not yet. If I had to pick one I’d say it’s easier to EQ some mid into the loop of the Iconic than it is to EQ low end into the loop of the SC. But really you can’t go wrong with either one. They’re both loud as shit and sound great just in different ways. The super crush is a hell of a lot easier to lug around so that may steer you as well. Cheaper, way lighter, noticeably smaller. I like the reverb overall on the SC more than the Iconic but the SC reverb decays for way too long if you have it past 9 o’clock and really thwack the strings. The iconic green channel overdrive is damn near the exact tone as the blue channel stealth which sounds killer, and the red channel on the iconic with the burn is just massive in a way the SC never can be. Again they’re super different. Get both! They’re cheap enough!

My grandson is in a band now and plays a Dual Rectifier half stack and I gave him a Carvin 50-watt tube combo I had to use as a back-up. He likes the portability of the Carvin, but the combo doesn't have the roar of the mesa. He has friend's, in another band who play Orange Cr120 half stacks, but when listening to this band live the guitars just don't have the umph to step forward when the songs require it. They do sound fantastic on tracks cut in a studio, however. I fear the cr100 will be like the Carvin......Almost alright.

    • @K707OR30
      @K707OR30 Před rokem +1

      @@robertcarey3383 no problem. The iconic also has a volume/level boost which can really jump up in volume for leads. Not that you couldn’t put a volume boost into the loop of the SC, but the Iconic boost also adds more body to the overall tone in addition to volume. Another thing is with the lack of low-end on the dirty channel of the SC, that may be an issue with leads as well in a band context. You do want leads to cut with mids and yes it’s the bassists job to carry the low end and all, but you also want low end in your guitar tone to kind of “push” even the high notes and just move more air. You feel it more than you hear it but when you don’t have that you can really tell, and that feel not being there enough is really what disappointed me with the SC. The iconic does that better in my opinion but they’re both still killer amps.

      I encountered this as well and have confirmed with other SC owners that they have experienced the same.
      After encountering this, I changed how I set up the amp. I now run the main master volume wide open and slowly bring up the individual channel volumes to set the desired loudness for each channel. This allows you to max the gain on the dirty channel if you like without causing the oscillation issue.
      Not sure why but I think the amp sounds better overall when configured this way.
