    1. He shot all of his movie without a complete script until “The Great Dictator”.
    2. He was a king of retakes, sometimes he took 300+ takes only for a 3 min sequence.

Correction: The Great Dictator (1940) was not his only sound film. His other sound films were Monsieur Verdoux (1947), Limelight (1952), A King in New York (1957), and his only color film A Countess from Hong Kong (1967). He only had a cameo in his last film though. All are great films, in my honest opinion. As long as people watch them with an open mind and not expect the little tramp to waddle by at any moment, they will appreciate them much more. He does dress as a tramp in Limelight, but not exactly the one you're used to seeing. He was such a talented man. He sings in Limelight in addition to dancing, some comedy, and drama. An additional interesting note on Limelight is Buster Keaton also appears in this film. It makes me wish that Chaplin had done more sound films. Despite bad reviews at the time of its release, his 1967 film is a really cute and enjoyable film to watch. However, I agree with most people that Marlon Brando wasn't the best choice for the male lead. I think it would have been a much better film with a more comedic type of actor. Sofia Loren was perfect for the part, though. It was a screen play he had written back in the 1930s for himself and Paulette Goddard. It definitely would have been a much better film if he had been young enough to play the male lead himself.

As someone who has taken classes (and has a general interest) in both ASL and film history, I think that it's important to note that there were Deaf actors in the silent film era. Chaplin noticed that they had different reactions to things happening than hearing people. So, noticing this, Chaplin copied the expressive nature of the Deaf community to enhance his comedy, and also learned ASL and befriended Deaf actors he worked with.

Correction...Chaplin worked with Stan Laurel, or Stanley Jefferson as he was known at the time, during his time working for Fred Karno in the British music halls, not when he was clogging with The Eight Lancashire Lads.

He did more fully sound pictures after "The Great Dictator". Look up "Limelight" (1952) and "Monsieur Verdoux" (1947). He was going to the the London premiere of "Limelight" with his family when the US government informed him he couldn't return to the country. Ugh! "Monsieur Verdoux" is a dark comedy sort of like "Arsenic and Old Lace". However, he is a bank clerk who loses his job in the 1930 stock market crash. He is unable to get another job after that. Therefore, to support his wife who is in a wheel chair and his son, he lives a life of crime as a bigamist and murderer by marrying widows with fortunes and then killing them for their money. They don't actually show him killing them. It's implied. However, there is one very boisterous and loud wife who is hard to kill. This is where the comedy comes in. It didn't do well at the time because audiences weren't ready to see him in that context. However, it's currently on Amazon Video and has 4 stars. William Farley best known for the character Fred Mertz from "I Love Lucy" also makes an appearance in this film. If you can get passed the fact that he's Charlie Chaplin and not The Tramp in this film, it's actually very good. "Limelight" is about an aging stage comedian so it's more of a drama with comedy thrown in here and there. Buster Keaton also makes an appearance in this film. There is a scene where Charlie does become a tramp like character, but he sings and dances on stage in a dream sequence. His experience in definitely vaudeville comes out here and you're left scratching your head as to why he didn't think he could have added sound to his Tramp pictures after talkies became the norm. He was actually an awesome singer and at 62 years of age still could dance around the stage with ease. There were a couple of other sound films made while in his exile. However, I have not seen them so I can't comment. But both "Monsieur Verdoux" and "Limelight", though, are very underrated films. I highly recommend both of them.
