Peter Falk (1927 - 2011) was an American actor and comedian, known for his role as Lieutenant Columbo in the long-running television series Columbo (1968-2003), for which he won four Primetime Emmy Awards (1972, 1975, 1976, 1990) and a Golden Globe Award (1973). He first starred as Columbo in two 90-minute TV pilots; the first with Gene Barry in 1968 and the second with Lee Grant in 1971. The show then aired as part of The NBC Mystery Movie series from 1971 to 1978, and again on ABC from 1989 to 2003. Falk was twice nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, for Murder, Inc. (1960) and Pocketful of Miracles (1961), and won his first Emmy Award in 1962 for The Dick Powell Theatre. He was the first actor to be nominated for an Academy Award and an Emmy Award in the same year, achieving the feat twice (1961/62). He went on to appear in such films as It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963), The Great Race (1965), Anzio (1968), Murder by Death (1976), The Cheap Detective (1978), The In-Laws (1979), The Princess Bride (1987), Wings of Desire (1987), The Player (1992), and Next (2007), as well as many television guest roles.
Falk was also known for his collaborations with filmmaker and actor John Cassavetes in films such as: Husbands (1970), A Woman Under the Influence (1974), Opening Night (1977), Elaine May's Mikey and Nicky (1976) and the Columbo episode: Étude in Black (1972). In 1996, TV Guide ranked Falk No. 21 on its 50 Greatest TV Stars of All Time list.

Peter Falk one of the greatest actors of our time and icon he was born for colombo
He was born Columbo.
This was always one of my favorites. Smoking indoors in NYC!
Without Peter Falk, Columbo would not have been the great success it was. Try to imagine anyone else filling that role. Impossible. BTW I'm true-blue Columbo fan. My wife would ask me why I am watching Colmubo, you seen them all many times? I would respond by telling how great the series is and how great a sleuth Columbo was and how well Falk portrayed the role. I think I've seem them all a half-dozen times and yet, I'll continue watching them.
@Craig Salt "...wearing that rancid coat " and driving around in that little piece of car of his the Peugeot . Yeah, I looked it up 'cause I'm old and forgot what make it was, lol. I was going to say a Citroen.lol.
Abdolutely
I have the complete Columbo series on DVD and I binge watch the entire series at least once a year. It soothes me. It is like visiting an old friend.
Same here
I've got the box set too. He was also a great artist. In his autobiography it shows you some pencil sketches he did. ❤❤
Yeah same here ! 👍
I just got it. I'm enjoying it!
@@SingVangelistNo, it's not! Monk doesn't even compare to Columbo.
I am so much of a Columbo fan I practically watch an episode 2 or 3 times a week. Needless to say I've seen every episode 20x times. A lot of people have told me how odd that was a African American kid from Brooklyn so into Columbo that was filmed in 1970's when I was a child. Columbo inspired me to conduct my life as underestimated. Columbo was the quintessential blue collar worker that his adversaries underestimated because they were of another class. I related to that as I was coming up via boxing, school, the army, and in business. In an episode Columbo one said, "if I read the books, put in the work, I would have success". Today that is looked upon as old fashion because technology dictates everything. I wasn't the best looking, most articulate, or even most inspiring person; however, I worked the hardest. No one could out work me and by the time people figured it out, I was number #1 in practically everything I did because I put in the work. Thank you Columbo and thank you Peter Falk.
I do, too. No, you're not weird 👍
Very profound
Mr. Moore,
This one of the most intelligent CZcams comments I have read. You realize that is not permitted, right!
It amazes me how such seemingly small things can have such profound effect on our lives.
Thanks,
Ian Butler
Wow, what an incredible tribute. And you're not weird. A fan is a fan is a fan. And I tape them on several channels and savor them with my darling husband, sometimes several a day, faves repeatedly. If this means that I don't have a life, that's just one opinion (or 2 or 3....) Who cares.
That's a very important comment and you touched on the thing that appeals to me so much about Columbo - his modesty. Although the villain seems superior and underestimates Columbo, he is actually extremely intelligent and talented at his job and defeats the self-assured evildoer in the end. So I agree with your belief that he is a good model for all of us, particularly in this age of shameless self-promotion. And I am glad that you, with your modesty and diligence, have been successful. I guess the classic virtues are still viable.
Peter Falk was a genuinely nice guy in real life too. All during this interview his stories, infectious smile and sense of humor at life made it entertaining and engaging.
That's too bad. I guess, there is always two sides to a story. Funny how I never heard about that until now. Anyway I will have to do a little research on that. I just started watching the show for the first time last week and now I am hooked. It brings me back to the early seventies with memories as a teenager enjoying a wonderful life@cielange5027
How do you know these things @cielange5027?
When you see his history in acting, films also his awards, he deserved a lot more recognition. A massively underrated actor.
He was never underrated by anyone.
He is not unterrated he was huge succes in the 60s and 70s and then he made columbo. ( my favorite) and that charactor followed him.since. I loved him and omg he was so fucking sexy Even as an old man
❤so talented
2 Academy Award nominations and 5 or 6 Emmy wins.....yeah, underrated
Not underrated as such... everybody recognizes him as a fine fine actor and a great star! However, he was from another time.. and he didn't do movies that traveled far! Like how Colombo did!
In any case he is very dearly loved by many and pretty much everybody recognizes that he is irreplaceable(and second to none!)!!
One of the most brilliant actors ever. I can imagine him pausing just before his passing and saying " just one more thing". He was a really nice, thoughtful and humble human being.
I am 64 and had my right eye removed at two months old. I have had a glass eye all my life. Pete Falk was always an inspiration to me. Its not easy being me!
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
I was always self-conscious about my slight overbite... but when I discovered Freddie Mercury, and what a badAss he is, I didn't feel so awkward. 🤗❤
@@queencerseilannister3519 That is amazing, how these people like Freddie can touch people's lives just by existing. Raymond Burr's role as Ironside, though only playing a disabled person, the character appealed to me more after my own spinal cord injury.
Everyone here is special and unique! I love it! We are all beautifully made and loved. I love you all even if I don't know you. 🥰
Glad to read this. God bless you!
Peter Falk as Columbo might be the single most beloved character in the history of television. My father once told me he saw Falk walking on a New York City street in the 1970's, and that enough people recognized him at the same time that they actually started to applaud him.
AW! That is very sweet! We miss you Peter Falk. Thank you COLUMBO!💓🕵♂🐶🚬
One of the coolest guys who ever lived.
RIP Peter Falk.
Ahhh, just one more thing please....
Nothing about ‘Wings Of Desire’...
@@paulaaubin4987 Indeed, lol. A signature phrase that should have been trademarked or put in the Smithsonian. I now believe I watch Columbo for the moment he use that phrase like an intellectual, sharp edged weapon, at his adversary or a suspect. You knew, then, that it was not "if" Columbo would catch his quarry, just "when". Who amongst us still find ourselves saying the phrase or smiling to ourselves as we hear him saying the phrase...and the rerun is not playing on one our tvs or our devices?
And manages to be huggable at the same time.
My father enjoyed Columbo always!!!!
This is one of the few actors studio interviews where you don't feel any pretentiousness and you're just happy to listen to the guys life story
Peter Falk is a class act all the way. There will never be another Columbo. He owned it then and he owns it now.
Peter died over 5 years ago yw
Debbie King+ I can't imagine they would ever try to remake it with another actor. It just wouldn't work.
@@PerthTowne that is what I thought you meant? But I just got a few more questions I need to ask ,do you mind?
@@giftedplanksify , he died in 2011.
True. Peter Falk belongs with Carroll O'Connor and James Gandolfini in creating a character that yes, all three owned.
My dad and he shared a class together while attending Hamilton College in New York. Both of them sat in the back of class. Falk would cover his good eye with his hand and fall fast asleep. When he’d snore, my dad would get blamed!
the greatest detective series ever; he was unbeatable.
I agree. Stephen Fry does too. He claims it's the best detective show ever made, and he's never wrong. The format of knowing whodunit from the start and following along with him as he solved the crime was brilliant and I can't think of any other show where it's been done.
4
I liked Jessica Fletcher too
he was beaten a few times but they never aired those episodes 😅
@@hasan_z he was never beaten. One time he was soft on a suspect because she was gonna die from brain cancer within weeks anyway.
If "Columbo" is on, I will watch it.
Forget about it
What did you pay for those shoes
Colombo is on tv almost 3 times weekly, and I watch or record them. I’ve seen them hundreds of times!
I can’t even begin to imagine my life without Columbo.
Well put
he was a nice guy for sure, and I love the episodes with the animals.............................how to dial a murder lol with laurel and hardy classic
Sad life.
@zondaintheair They do, and they don't. I think a favorite detective TV show is a viable alternative. (I am just about to go to jail for my 2nd DUI within 7 years at age 68 and yes...I got the joke and appreciate your humor!) (or seriousness)
I can and your life would have sucked worse than it did.
Peter Falk and James Garner were my favorite actors. Both could play a role so well you would swear it was real. And both were genuinely nice people. RIP
I never get tired of watching Columbo episodes. I am addicted to this series. Peter Falk was awesome!!!
Greetings from Rio de Janeiro Brazil
He was awesome. I had a chance to go to rio one time. But I blew it. I’ll get down there some day. Greetings to you from Las Vegas.
Well, with all respect to other of his roles, I cannot imagine him as anything else. And I don't know. if it's a bad thing. He is always Columbo to me. Btw, glad he made that contract to make longer episodes. They are like movies for me... Less is more..
Alzira Neves it’s an addicting series, well written.
I watch it daily...been doing that for 7 years straight. I grew up on Columbo...know every story...director...actor....writer...everything.
CHRISTOPHER PRICE I watch about 1-2 episodes/week. When I watch em, I can temporarily forget the world’s gone mad.
Peter Falk is one of the most compelling actors I have ever seen. He draws the viewer in, and it's impossible to turn away. You cannot take your eyes off him, because you want to know what he's going to do next. I would pay just to listen to him read from a telephone directory.
Mr. Falk certainly had the confidence to laugh at himself, which made him an attractive person in my book. I wish I had known him personally.
I’m 64 years old and recently became a HUGE fan of Columbo, we watch about 5 shows a week now and It’s my favorite show. Thank you Peter Falk, you’re truly amazing.
It is on constant repeat here in England. A channel called 5USA and another channel called ITV3 and ITV4 air never ending re-runs every Saturday and Sunday.
Same here. Just started watching it everyday now
i am starting watching Columbo every day. I am a fan of Columbo
Gosh, I miss this man. He just seemed like a really decent bloke.
When Peter played the grandfather in the movie "Princess Bride" he was perfect!
Bruce Jones Yep he was. I'm a grandfather of 8 and still enjoy watching that movie once in a while.
I saw that! He was perfect!
@@vinyltapelover Such a blessing to see your grandchildren grow 😃May you continue to experience this joy
He was so adorable as a grandfather in that movie 😀
Yes. Loved it.
I would so love to give Peter Falk a huge hug ❤
My Mom was good friends with Peter Falk growing up.She always said he was funny, intelligent and loved by all.
We loved going to his parents store...great place..like the old fabric shops on Broadway.
Nice little story.
Lovely - good to hear that he was a nice guy.
Loveable character......great to have the connection.
the amount of lines he had to memorize was incredible. I have no idea how he did it the material he must have been given for each episode was immense due to the complexity of the crimes. he played an absent minded detective, but was far from that in real life, wow, he is to be celebrated. I believe he even was on the actors guild interview with that famouse dude who all the actors respected
@@harpoon_bakery162 I believe his "absent minded detective" was a mode he kicked in to disarm suspects and witnesses in to believing that he was not the kind of sharp, intellectual, intuitive cop that will always get his man or woman. To relate his absent minded personna to martial arts, he used others' arrogance and energy against themselves.
"Yes he was on James Lipton's Inside the Actors Studio. And I so agree with you about Mr. Lipton being respected by the actors😊👍. I don't have the youtube link handy but you will easily find it. I just watched it recently myself. If you are fan, James Lipton also did a great interview with David Chappell. I hope that helps. You have a great and blessed day.
What a brilliant guy Peter Falk was. I absolutely love Columbo. Nobody else could ever play that part. And i hope they never try to remake it. Total legend.
He is funny, genuine, legit and so open and warm! What a lovable man! 😀
One of the most magical things about Columbo is that EVERYONE, regardless of their tastes in anything else, seems to like it. That's a special achievement. And good for Peter Falk that he always embraced the character rather than giving it the old, "I don't just want to be known for..."
Met him as a college kid when he was filming the brinks job in Boston. A genuinely sweet man, and class act. I learned the hard way , man could shoot pool
There was a Columbo episode where he was able to show off his pool skills.
@@TomMarvan i was wondering how they did that because he was absolutely CRACKED at pool in that scene, guess that explains it haha
@@St1ckyGrape He also launched a beautiful 3-wood drive on another episode.
God, he was such a treasure.
Well said...
There’s NEVER been any other actor like him! ❤️🤧😊
... may I say, "is" such a treasure.
both on stage were....seize the day. carpe diem... they're both gone now.
Lee Majors, I think so.
I watched Colombo when I was 10, and I was so captivated by the character! His mannerisms timing and delivery of his dialogue, no one could have played it better! Now as an adult I’ve come to appreciate Peter as an amazing actor, what a joy of a human being. One of a kind...
Bing Crosby was 1st choice... Preferred to play golf
What a great actor and person.
There has been no other actor with the range of talent as Peter Faulk. He also, quite clearly is just a wonderful human being.
I have been binge watching all of the Columbo episodes . He is such a natural actor and nice human being.
I’ve been binging Columbo too! I never watched it before and it’s turned into my favorite series ever.
Looking for FULL Columbo episodes. Where??
@@quackbeck Peacock has all of the episodes from both runs of the series!

May you RIP Peter Falk, what a gem of a man, such a great actor and story teller! The way he departed, what a sweet man
I love his interviews. He shuts his mouth and lets his guest speaks.
I could listen to Peter Falk for hours. Hearing him recount so many fascinating things, makes me incredibly sad that he ended up with Alzheimer's : (
Absolutely brilliant man and actor.
I watch Columbo all the time. I am so glad Peter took the role and made the character his own. God bless you, Peter, you brought a lot of happiness to people.
didn't sit on his laurels, learned a new passion, became an accomplished painter....what a man, what a life!
I think Peter Falk was a class act. RIP.
Peter Falk was such a genuinely humble human being.
Thank you TUBI for giving us all 16 seasons of my guy COLUMBO!!! I used to rent episodes from the library about 12yrs ago but now I can enjoy all 16 seasons anytime I want with no rushing to return them lol. I'm 37yrs old and I'm a huge huge huge COLUMBO fan along with MURDER SHE WROTE and bc of that my kids know exactly who COLUMBO and PETER FALK is❤. Thank you so much Peter and may your talented, gifted soul continue to rest peacefully ❤🙏🏾💯
It's nice to honor people when they're alive. This did, it was great. Well done, affectionate and meaningful.
I worked with Peter Falk on COLOMBO when I was in Editing, on the Lot. We got along well - I understood him and laughed at his jokes. ;-)
STEVEN BURGER Columbo*. Are you sure you worked with him?
@Tabby Road I don't know if he worked on the show or not, but he didn't say on the "set", he said on the "lot". The show was edited on the lot, the producers were on the lot, much of it was shot on the lot, and Falk would definitely be involved in the editing. So that part is not inconsistent.
I saw him and his wife back in 1979 with his gorgeous wife at the LA Fonda Mexican Restaurant and Dinner show in Los Angeles. He was a very humble man, and I saw that when he was getting his standing ovation!😍👏❤
Such a gracious guy when answering the audience's questions. Sincere and gracious.
Peter was a Healer.
We received a few Healers in the 70's ...mostly musical Healers .
Something that the Universe gave us... for a little while.
What a gift. I am thankful.~~
Remember when Columbo touched the painting, and Ross Martin said " Those aren't my fingerprints!" ? The sly detective
says " I wasn't looking for your fingerprints, I was looking for mine." , I will never forget the look on his face, great acting all around.
Yessssssss! One of my favorite scenes, when Columbia then pulls his hands out of his pockets...wearing 🧤 gloves!!!!
Jeff Hopkins
If you are Ross Martin fan, the 1962 film noir, "Experiment in Terror" is good one to watch.
@@vinyltapelover Martin was another real talent.
Yeeess
@@vinyltapelover : yes, he was so frightening in that movie....... he oozed menace!!
This one would be hard to top. The most honest, genuine, and insightful interview. I could not have enjoyed this any more than i did.
Wonderful interview by Peter Falk, he was so talented and a class act. Thanks!
The In Laws was absolutely hilarious, with Falk and Arkin playing off each other. So happy to have been a youth during Columbo - Peter Falk was amazing.
Fantastic movie "The In Laws.'
Hilarious! Arkin's facial expressions while reacting to Falk sealed the deal.
Serpentine Shel!
What a charmer. One of my favorite actors. Truly one of a kind and a class act!
The legend that is Peter Falk, great guy, I love him. He was, is and always be 'Columbo'
Steven Bocho tells a story of his first big writing gig on Columbo. Peter Falk would scream at Levinson/Link to make it a better show while encouraging Bochco. He also said when screw ups happened with the crew Falk would jump in and take the heat because he had the juice to take the hit. What a guy.
A very handsome man plus an amazing actor, a very humble man love him,
Great the way Peter turns to address the audience in such an encouraging way that he almost sees his younger self sitting there.
His humility is what made that possible.
Peter is Columbo, Columbo is Peter and both are unequivocally THE BEST...
LOVED this man! A sweetheart of a human and actor! Watched his Columbo shows over, over and over again. Couldn't get enough of him!
I like Peter Falk. So talented but so humble. Loved "Columbo."
He will remain in our memories
Peter Falk could do no wrong. He was versatile, great at comedy, drama, and anything in between. RIP, Mr. Falk, you were one of THE greatest ever!
you said it. and as Peter O'Toole said(actually quoting another actor in 'My favorite year') "dying is easy, comedy is hard." I remember when I first saw 'the In-laws' I was on the floor. one of the actors had done a talk show plugging the film as "the funniest film ever made" ,I thought, after Chaplin and the Marx bros.? but it was the funniest I'd seen in a long while.

R.I.P Peter Falk x
I was born in New Zealand in 1955. By the mid 60's, my parents bought our first B & W television and I was captivated, mostly by imported American comedies, westerns & cop shows. The enduring series and my favourite of all time, was, and still is...... COLUMBO. Sky Television NZ still play it regularly on their nostalgia channels, and I series link every episode to this day. Columbo is my favourite fictional hero of all time. Thank you Peter Falk for your brilliance.
This was without doubt the most warm hearted and funny edition of actors studio I have ever seen. And at the end when he said that line about what a welcome he had received I just teared up completely. What a wonderful man! 💙
His performances in Husbands and Woman Under the Influence are astounding. And here’s how good he was as Columbo: a mystery show where they show you who the killer is and how he did it, and you are still riveted watching him figure out what you already know. Amazing.
Peter was an unbelievable actor, truly one of the best of the best, as Lieutenant Columbo even if you didn't commit the murder you'd be better of admitting to it just to get him off your back, he was simply an AMAZING ACTOR, the BEST OF THE BEST. RIP.
PETER FALK.....after almost thirty years watching..most of His work i had the joy in 1994 working with this GREAT HUMAN ACTOR as the Make up artist in [...corfu greece ]with GLEN HADLEY........it was a LIKE A DREAM .so simple and powerful no words to describe him in or off the set.....god bless his family..............

It's impossible not to love this man!
Brillant Brillant comedian/actor. Funnier than hell. Unique and Inspired, One of a kind. No one can duplicate his genius
One of my favorite episodes of The Twilight Zone was Peter Falk playing a Castro like dictator in The Mirror. Peter Falk showed more range in 30 minutes than most actors do in a 2 hour movie.

Columbo was the love of my life. His quirky sleuthing and the logic in solving murder mysteries. BRILLIANT. Thank you 💓 for the interview. Very much cherished ❤❤😊
Im a life long newyorker. Im gonna die on this trash heap. Pete was an ace. He drank at my mothers bar for 10 years. Tipped like a monster and brought a stray kitten in once that lived in the bar for almost 20 years. Mr. Falk would stop in for a beer, but really just wanted to feed the cat special treats from his coat pocket. The man was...LARGER THAN LIFE.
I met him when i was 9. He told me his name was Pete The Pirate. and i Laughed and he said "that was easy, no get outta here". (My mother also told me John Cassavetes came in ONCE...and complained about the cat in the most SERIOUSLY JOKING way possible. He was another mensch)
I've been watching Columbo since I was a kid in the seventies and they're still being shown now in the UK and I'm still watching them. The premise of the show is genius, you know who dunnit, how they dunnit and why they dunnit, then it's all about about how the genius, unassuming lieutenant went about proving it, which is what made it so original.
he was a guy that somehow resonated...the kind of guy you'd want to have a beer with...when he was in a flick you gravitated to what was happening...he drew you to the character.
Peter Falk , strange enigmatic man , loved every movie I saw with or from him I saw so far ,
But of course it was Colombo that fascinated me most ,

A great character and a charming man. He had his issues at times as the character wore on him. His work is a journey of enjoyable deliveries. Rest in Peace Peter Falk!!!
The best, simply the best. A unique colorful character and real New Yorker.
It is a testament to Falk's immense talent that made Columbo such a success and remains beloved by so many fans. That show did not have sex or violence - something that prime time TV was exploiting with great success and popularity in the 70s. Yet when COlumbo was on TV and he was doing his cat and mouse sparring with a murderer, you just could not take your eyes off him.
My dad loved columbo was brought up watching him ❤❤❤❤😭
Even though he played Many roles on stage & screen, To me, Peter Falk will Always be " Columbo ", Nobody else Could EVER play that character; now, its difficult to understand how TV producers wanted ( at first) Bing Crosby to play the detective in the rumpled raincoat! RIP. Mr. Falk
My mom and I said that the other day too. No oneeee could play Columbo but Falk.
