The Academy Award-winning actor called for bolstering background checks and raising the minimum age to purchase an AR-15-style rifle from 18 to 21. His speech came after last month’s shooting at a school in his hometown of Uvalde, Texas, that killed 19 students and two teachers

@@insertname9581 How did you misinterpret that comment this badly
His the only one who speak the other actor and actres in hollywood, they don't care.

Because he did it better than the politicians and told the truth
Because he made the same exact speech many times over the last decade. Why is his wife wearing the dead girls shoes? Seems sick to me.
The point he is making here, regardless of political views or the fact that he’s an actor, is that the children are what’s important here. Adults need to take more responsibility.

@Angelo Bruno hey bro transfer me your life saving it's for the children
Why was he smiling while giving this speech? 🧐 They were killed because the whole thing was orchestrated. They purposefully killed kids where Matthew is from so that he could speak out against guns. If Matthew was from Houston, the shooting would have been in Houston. Kids were purposefully sacrificed. The whole thing is disgusting.
@Angelo Bruno The whole ordeal was orchestrated. All planned to let children die.
Regardless of your political stance, what happened was horrible. This man here is frustrated.

Such a strong speech and still nothing has changed.
if only the people that worked for the school was able to arm themselves to defend these children...
@Cash no where else in the world does that sentence make sense... why on earth should American teachers have to carry firarm protection at all times when other teachers never have to think about it?
The man is paid 10 million dollars a year by Salesforce to be a "creative advisor" while they lay off thousands of people. Parents, kids, sisters brothers etc. But yeah, sure.
It just feels cringey. He gave this speech when he had loosely unspecific political ambitions. It comes off like an actor giving a speech, not a human being being human.
Thank you Matthew McConaughey for standing up for Texas being a Texas native rest in paradise to the children and adults whose lives were lost 🙏🏽 🕊
I hope that there is reform for teachers to be able to arm themselves to defend the children... Just as the constitution intended.

This is so powerful in the reality of what Matthew says. Why should they be forgotten? Why shouldn’t their dreams and plans to be be recognized?
Did the actor give a performance? Did it have the intended effect of hitting your emotions? Cool. So should we now obey the professional pretender.
Because they're dead.
Thanks to mathew for caring enough and for using his power for the betterment of the lives of children and their parents. I guess being a parent, he understands how hard it is to lose one's child.

Every time I hear him talk I'm all ears....Matthew is passionate and has genuine concern about people in general. I'm not sure what caution they will take but security gates/guards need to be in place and that's all over American Schools! It should be the law for every single school.
I'm all ears too when he speaks. But why in general should schools have guards? It's because everyone can buy a gun...that's the other way around. Make laws so NOT everyone can buy a gun. Background checks, more mental health for people. Prevent shootings like these instead of acting after!!!
@@sanAFCA86
Exactly? I’m an elementary teacher in Ontario, Canada. I have practiced for fire drills on many occasions. We have had school lockdowns, usually because of police activity in the area of the school, not AY the school. What I have yet to do is take part in an active shooter drill.
Unlike how life was when I was a child who attended schools in Ontario, exterior school doors are locked, as a safety measure, but I don’t go to school with the worry of a possible active shooter hovering over my head.
Security gates / armed guards don't help anything. This tragedy proves it. We need SENSIBLE gun laws. It should not be easier to buy a gun than a beer or cigarettes.
He's an actor
So does anybody know how an 18 year old managed to save over 10k for the expensive guns body armor bullets??!!??
He May have had a job since he was 16 and savings (I’m a teacher and some of my students that age work 30-40 hours per week-yes, on top of school-and save that much) or took out a credit card without plans to pay it back because he was planning for suicide by cop. Or maybe grandma died and left him money. Who knows but, It’s not impossible for him to have access to that much.
Responsible gun control, mental health support And Secure and safe schools for our children-as an educator of 30+ for every student who passes through my door, for every student on my school campus.
Gun control of any kind doesn't work. The majority of mass shootings are done in gun free zones that are in states/areas where gun control is extremely strict and the majority of the time the guns used were not legally obtained by the lunatic shooting. Now more mental health support actually will make a differences because these people who don't hear mass shootings are mentally unstable people. Put more focus on mental health, make more available and free.
Control it a terrible word to use, we need to promote proper responsible ownership. Raising the age to 21 is an excellent start, it's not control but a 21 year old is typically much more stable than an 18 year old. Mental help in schools and beyond needs to be vastly improved and more affordable. I don't support teachers with guns but there are thousands of service men and women who would gladly take a job to risk their lives to stand guard at our schools.
Considering the amount of legal guns that there are in this country compared to the amount of crimes commited with those legal guns, I'd say we have very responsible gun owners. You will never stop the mentally ill from getting their hands on a gun if they want to cause damage. And if its not a gun, it will eventually be something else to cause damage. I'm sure there were plenty of alcoholics when they banned booze 100 years ago. Well guess what, those people still found a way to get a drink.
Tackle the real problem in this country and thats inner city illegal gun crime. That is where 99 percent of the crimes come from and make our numbers look awful. Children are dying every day from those types of shooting's in multiple numbers all over the country. But most people only really seem to care when it happens to multiple children in one location at one time. from a legal gun.
Real hypocritical if you ask me
In some States a 16-year old driving test involves driving around a few cones in a private car park for 15 minutes, and it's still 20 times harder than buying a gun, how dose that make sense?
How "dose" it, tell me.
@@johnabel5943 I'm glad you took something away from the conversation, it's a pity it was a autocorrect mistake.
Cars aren’t used for self defense. Cars are classified as a privilege not a right. That’s how.
It makes no sense.
A CWP course involves finger prints, an FBI back ground check, and an 8 hour course to be able to carry a gun. Yes you can buy a gun which will take an FBI background check or you can buy a car which needs a credit check but if you want to use that car to run over people that is a whole different issue. If you have had mental issues you can buy a car you can’t buy a gun.

Yes, we need to do something about the mental health issues in America. A individual that can do something this horrible, has to have a mental health issue. Have I missed the point here? Why do you need an assault weapon at any age?
yes
It is a thing; a possession, a tool. It isn't alive. It doesn't make decisions. You can have one just as you need clothing, or food, or maybe a hammer, or a car. It's a thing. It has no brain. It is a thing. You make a decision for yourself. You have no right to ask if someone else wants a firearm. It's none of your business, just as it is none of my business. Your business is yours, until you break the law.
To defend myself from domestic tyranny. I have very little trust in the government and local authorities. Also I will own whatever I please.
It's not an assault rifle. That's a made up term to push your agenda.
Nothing will change until a senseless tragedy like this hits home on this level for a member of congress or senate.
Very moving, I would love to think that things will change this time, sadly I’m not optimistic, hope I’m wrong.

Hello. l'm from Canada and, without a doubt, l found this speech to be extremely moving, even though gun violence, indeed almost any type of violence, doesn't seem to plague our country to the extent it does the USA. Of course as Canadians, we share much linguistically, politically, culturally, and other elements, with the US. Yet, there doesn't seem to be as much animosity amongst ourselves; though indeed, we certainly are not without our own problems and challenges. So what makes our countries so different in temperament? lt would seem to me that there are certain 'elements', if you will, that 'push buttons' in Americans and trigger 'eruptions of hostility', and as Canadians, we don't appear to have these triggers. And thus, any 'eruptions' we would have are rather few and far between, and much lower in intensity. Perhaps it's these button-pushing triggers that America needs to look for in its soul-searching/healing process.
Thank you for sharing. I think your input ties into our terrible mental healthcare system.
