The pink noise part is genius. It really showed the differences between the pedals
This is the comparison I didn’t know I need. Well done. Thanks.
Your pink noise comparison is the reason I subscribed, love it!
Really like the live pink noise examples, it’s cool to see how the controls directly affect the signal.
Brilliant stuff with the pink noise comparison. Thank you!
Really liked the real time pink noise comparison, also i preferred the DS-2
same here
Yup im using it
Good job with the real time pink noise!
Love the pink noise comparisons!
DS-2 is what the Ds-1 is supposed to be. Think of the Ds-2 as more refined Ds-1.
Very good video, including the noise graphs & sound demo. Both pedals sound best in the amp's distortion channel. Overall, the DS-2 sounds thicker & louder and my preferred pedal of the two, I have two DS-2's. The DS-2 can also do old school thrash as well as death metal.
Thank you!
DS-1 did get a chainsaw filter going while the DS-2 sounded like JCM800 era Death. I would say using both with tight actives on a 6 string would work. Drop A and lower a boost is gonna be needed pretty much lol.
DS-2 is great for hi-gain riffs cause it has more mids and gain
DS-1 is great for low-gain, it's so dirty and crunchy
This was great! I really dig the frequency comparison; it’s helps my smooth brain understand better.
Have you ever tried the DS-1X? I’m curious to see how it compares and your thoughts on it.
No, not yet.
4:34 accurate chainsaw
Indeed. From what Ive gathered of interviews, talking to sound engineers and using all these pedals, myself, the key to the LHP sound, is a globally mixed rhythm track, on a maxed out SD1, low in the background. Thats why no one ever gets it right by just diming out their HM2, on a dirty amp.
can you do a ds1+equalizer if its possible to get the chainsaw
Would also be nice if you did a typical ideal settings on the DS1 and DS2, albeit they may be different settings to compare where each pedal shines. Because the DS1 sounds horrible with the tone set all the way up (eg at 10), but very good when set between 1 and 3 and Distortion below 12 o'clock (very compressed above that) whereas the DS2 shines with the tone set past 12 o'clock.
Loved the full visual spectrum. More people should do this rather than using words to describe them. Thanks
(You did make both pedals sound truly awful during the video though, imho)
Haha, thanks! I like the dirtier, filthy spectrum of guitar tone to be honest ;)
The second mode is really Chainsaw friendly I wonder how it will fair against the real deal.
What version of the DS-1 was it? It wasn't a version 1(1978), because that model had a silver screw, which was used by Cobain for Bleach and Nevermind. Was it a version 2 (1993?-1994?) or was it a version 3 (2000). Cobain wouldn't use the version 2, after his version 1 was either stolen or given away, for recording In Utero because he noticed the difference. But after he obtained a DS-2 he recorded the album with it because he believed it sounded more like a version 1 DS-1. So there were 3 versions of the DS-1 and all 3 contained a different IC. The video suggests, because of the black screws, it was either v2 or v3. But which one?
Don't know for sure, I believe it's version 3. Interesting, that there are actually 3 different versions around.
@@DomeNightbearer Very interesting, until the video I was only aware of 2 versions. Upon researching the release dates I found out there was a third. The first 2 are Japanese and third is Taiwanese. www.soft.com.sg/forum/showthread.php?70396-Boss-DS-1-A-detailed-take! Now that website says the version 2 was released in 1994 but know for a fact Cobain wanted to use it for recording In Utero, but didn't, which was released in September 1993. Possibly he received a premarket release version due to how famous he was? But like I said he didn't like it and used the DS-2, apparently with the turbo mode off. John Frusciante from RHCP apparently uses it with the turbo mode on. www.reddit.com/r/Nirvana/comments/9wt1do/boss_ds1_vs_ds2/
Thanks for the information.
I really like ds1 color and simpler dial setup but I prefer ds2 sound.
The ds2 isn't this much more complicated actually... just leave it on turbo II and you are good 😅
@@DomeNightbearer the ds1 looks retro and sturdy, I find it more esthetically pleasing. When you spend hours on software plugins and daw's almost infinite options, a barenaked pedal is very attractive. Sometimes less fiddling makes for a more productive session, doesn't it? :D
@@espertempo The only operation difference is Turbo key, which toggles the pedal´s equalization. Other than that, the other DS2´s knobs have the very same function as in DS1´s.
Marcello Freitas Not Really
I have the DS2 and I use it for recordings. The DS1 can´t be used all the way high because it sounds terrible with such configuration. The DS2 sounds darker? Yes, but sounds more solid.
it can actually... That's how Grave used the DS-1. However it sounds indeed very extreme!
I just got a DS2 and was kinda dissapointed.
Mode 1, which is supposed be the DS1 version(?), is pretty weak, not as strong on the highest gain setting compared to the original DS1, mode 2 is stronger but has way too much mid range, I like to scoop mids on my EQ though.
All in all, I like my DS1 over the DS2!
interesting! Mode 1 isn't my favorite either, but Mode 2 is awesome. It can be rather dirty and chainsaw'ish. However... scooping mids is not it's strongest feature. Maybe MT-2, but in front of a driven channel or as a preamp?
@@DomeNightbearer no my amp and EQ pedal have 3 band EQs and more so I can scoop the DS2. I just got the DS2 a few days ago so I still need to tinker with it, at first glance it just didnt impress me but its still going on my Nirvana tribute board!
I don't know which is better but they are very similar...
There not ds2 sounds like a proper Distortion, you can't emulate that ds2 on turbo mode sound it's straight up frusciante! I own 3 of John Frusciante's Pedals.
@@kaicottrell1560 Yes I'm using the distortion pedal when I play rock like nirvana and bands like that.I mean they're similar while playing things like that...
Are these both made in taiwan?
Yes, sir!
Nice vidéo, really interesting format, I like the real time experiment.
DS-2 is more dark than DS-2. Depend of taste or genre you play if think ... so stupidly Black Metal and Death Metal.
However, in clean, I thought that DS-2 had more punch.
But mate do you have a Metalcore Pedal ?
DS-1.
I have a DS1. Anyone want to straight up trade lol?
I'll give ya a guitar and an amp for it,oh wait....
Year 2021: Buy DS-1X
Turbo has more mids while the DS-1 sounds pretty scooped!
It would have to be the DS-2 in this comparison. 🤘
As a stand alone pedal, I don’t like either one of them to be honest.
Tone is the middle knob 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
DS-2 is muuuuch easier on the ears
