    DS2 definitely has more mids and is smoother even on low mode, but DS1 is more articulate and raw sounding, I'll stick with my old DS1.

      Part of what makes the DS-1 sound so great is that it's slightly mids-scooped. It's the same reason Big Muffs are great sounding distortion pedals. Adding mids to that drive sound subtracts from a characteristic that made the original circuit sound appealing.

    I just got myself a DS-1 after more than 15 years playing with the DS-2 and it struck me how I've never noticed how "boxy" the DS-2 sounds! If you're looking for some Nirvana classic tones, the DS-1 is your best option in my opinion. God, even In Utero riffs sound better to me in a DS-1!

    @cijntjekid Před 3 lety +27

    The DS1 works best with the tone at 10 o' clock and lower. Then you can also cranck up the gain. The best is to mod it and make it sound like a tight hi-gain distortion pedal.

    I love the raw, electric sound of the DS-1. It reminds me of the old school Marshall gain, but I also feel like it's versatile enough to give a modern progressive tone. I feel like the mids on the DS-2 need to be scooped a bit, but I also can't say much because I don't typically play songs that require that kind of tone.

    I own a DS-2 and it's one my favorite effects pedals and it's a real learning experience for me because in mode 1 I have to out smart the pedal so it doesn't sound too muddy sometimes and in mode 2 I just max it out and it sounds like a fuzz which is great because I have a Fender Champion 40 watt amplifier

  • @HouseofAllSeasons
    @HouseofAllSeasons Před 2 lety +2

    I just finished an EP and I recorded several songs with a DS2 on them. It's a fun pedal to play for sure but like other people have pointed out I needed to give the tracks some love to get rid of the boxiness. I would have preferred not to do that. Maybe I wouldn't have had to do that with a DS1 or a RAT? -Eric

    I've always hated the sound of mode 2 on the DS-2. After hearing this comparison, I hate mode 1 also. The DS-1 sounds great! Its successor sounds like a bad clone with two flavors of yuck.

    • @numero6285
      @numero6285 Před rokem +1

      DS2 is not really a successor or a clone, it’s just a different distortion pedal, with a very different circuit.
      DS1 produces a vintage distortion whereas DS2 produces grunge sound : dirt, compressed with many larsen and harmonics.

    @johnladd5016 Před rokem +2

    Have used a DS2 for a while, and I always wanted one since Nirvana times when I read in some magazine that he used it towards teh end.
    At last I now have both. I must say that yes they are very different, the DS2 is defeinitely not just a DS1 with a turbo mode. There's more going on and I'm not quite sure what is different. Mine also have teh noticeable difference in level when both are set at 12 (DS1 being louder at 12).
    The DS1 is surprisingly easy to like, you get a nice distortion sound quite easily.
    I found it hard to find a sound I liked on the DS2, but it is possible to get great sounds if you spend the time trying thintgs out. Very different.
    I watched this video about a year ago and promised myself I'd come back when I got both, and here it is!
    I also have the Boss OD20 which has a DS1 setting on it, I am yet to compare these as I think it will be different again!

I just got an EHX Hot Tubes pedal and the Hot Wax pedal which is the hot tubes combined with the crayon od. Love the hot tubes, but the hot wax sounds nothing like the hot tubes. I think both of these are great. The DS1 was intended to work with overdriven amps and it works in that context really well. DS2 is more of a standalone pedal which you can run into a clean amp as your core distortion sound. I like how you can switch between the two channels to get more mids for leads. That said DS1 in front of a marshall with my guitar's volume control is great.

      The Guitar Manifesto I love how simple it is and if you put the tone knob at 11 o’clock stack it with something else it’s amazing under rated I had the ds2 turbo distortion I felt it didn’t sound too good even with a foot switch simple always better in my eyes. So cheap to pick up too second hand which is good.
