  • East Pokot is a Pastoralist community within Baringo Sub-County. East Pokot have few alternative livelihood opportunities available and they remain highly vulnerable to droughts. They lack early warning and preparedness measures to cushion them from shocks, and as such the populations recurrently faces the negative implications of adverse weather conditions. Hifadhi Africa captures the plight of women of East Pokot.

So impressive!! Your community is willing to do whatever it takes to live a better life. Your immense efforts are truly humbling and I bow down on my knees in front of you all. We have so much water in Canada that it's completely disgraceful how we take it for granted and expect it to flow from our taps as a constitutional right. We can learn much from your people, starting with humility and gratitude. Blessed Be every one of your Spirits for all eternity.

With all the stones on the ground, they could be creating rock swales to slow the rain water when it comes and generate more plant growth while recharging ground water in the area. With the addition of a local farm pond below the swales, several huts and perhaps the school could have access to water year round.

@@leelindsay5618 thank you for this new knowledge. It seems sand dam acts similarly to stone lines. The only difference is that sand dam is constructed within a river bedrock. We are taking stone lines into consideration.

Hifadhi Africa is proud to continue our partnership and association with our partner communities. We could not have it another way. A lot of sacrifices and hard work goes into such projects and our communal approach is always helpful.

You will be taken back by the upcoming impact documentary on these sand dams and how they have transformed a community of more than 150,000 pastoral people.

    One question.
Why is the height of the sand dam so low? They could have built it higher by 2 -4 feet more. Would have been able to retain more water. SMH

      @HifadhiAfrica  Před 3 lety +2

We have provided some of the engineering reasons above. The balance is always water retention and the risk of flooding and human or crop loss. But we have done instead to realize enough water supply, is that we have constructed 7 sand dams back to back instead of one. The sand dams are located few meters to a kilometer between each other.

At least these people should boil the water to kill 🧫 bacteria, 🦠 and filter the water before just drinking it. They Don’t think about

Look to me like that sand dam need to be at least a foot or two higher in height... for better n more water retaining.

Maybe the local circumstances didn’t allow for that

Some sand dams are suprisingly really low. That doesn't mean they aren't as effective.
Though it isn't apparent from video, it is still possible that the area in which sand will be collecting won't be very high, but might be very long, having same effect as higher dams would.
      With less effort.
Sure higher dam sounds better on paper, but not so much when you have to build it by hands.

There are few factors that determine the height of any given sand dam, including the ability of the river banks to support water force.
-River Banks Strength analyses: Strength of the river banks to support sand dam wings.
-Geographic nature of River bed: Ability of the water to collect and retain water by sampling soil texture.
-Nature of river flow: Vibrancy of the river when flowing to determine erosion rate and Erosion patterns among other destruction to ecology. Interviews from local elders to determine if a river flows at extreme speed.
