Our quest to make our 0.6-litre Suzuki Cappuccino faster than a MX-5, with Mike taking Yuki to a dyno to try and eke out a few more horsepower from his tiny engine. Adding in some coilovers and a brake upgrade, is the Cappuccino now capable of taking down the Mazda?

How do you reckon Yuki will get on against the MX-5? 🤔Thank you to Gtechniq for sponsoring today's video, check out their brand new Exo V5 coating here: www.gtechniq.co.uk/shop/auto/ceramic-coatings/exo-ultra-durable-coating/
better in the corners definitely but much slower
Not well if it’s the v10 engined one
@@BSA_Airgunning i imagine the v10 would be heavier than the four cylinder?
If you want three-digit power on that Suzuki, forge or increase the displacement of the engine! ;-)
You should of called it Suzi! Yuki sounds like someone throwing up and hiccuping at the same time 😂.
Fair play to the tuners when Mike was asking if 100bhp was possible. Many might have said something like "we'll give it a go" but he set realistic expectations right from the start. To me, that kind of honesty is worth a lot, and meant Mike went away very happy with his results.
But you can easily get 100ho and he still didn't as they were too tight on cash to buy the parts that are needed for those numbers
@@keio5274 I presume they would have needed a new turbo to go any higher? Then probably more fuelling to keep up
80hp is about the limit of the stock turbo. A decent programmable ecu would have been so much better than a flashed stock unit...along with a bigger turbo and injectors you can get up to 120hp, but that's pushing it. The biggest problem with the F6a is air flow through the engine. Head porting and different camshafts help a lot.
@@72mardy it wasn’t a flashed ECU, it was a programmable ECU in the original casing.
@@Pugjamin sorry, you're right. I skipped half the video because it was plain boring.
That said, it's only a microsquirt board in a factory case. Fairly basic system.
well it might be hard to beat mx-5 NA since mazda probably lost like 50% of it's mass due to natural biodegradation
Too soon, man. 😢
too real
@@JerGol The earliest NAs are 34 years old now, I'm not sure it's too soon 😂
This car's MOT history makes an MX-5 look durable 😂😂😂😂
Can we just take time to appreciate the production quality recently? Top work guys, everyone in the DriveTribe team should be proud!
production seems basic.
what exactly is great about it?
@@samuelgarrod8327 You can appreciate a business that performs well, can't you? Nobody said anything about thanking anyone.
What's wrong with appreciation of something? The dude commented positively on something and people still have a problem. Sad bell ends
@PJ Adamson Because that is what's sad about the world. People who hide behind their screen have to put people down. This is the only place they can be a tough guy.
@@No.Handle31 The funny thing is, they almost certainly had no intention of putting anyone down, and you're just reading way too much into it. He's literally just stating his opinion. Admitedly, his opinion, like all of ours, is completely irrelevant and literally nobody cares. Anyway, what IS so great about the production? It's high quality sure, but it doesn't set itself apart from any other production, and it's not trying to. It's actually a compliment when you think about it, because the intention of the production IS to be basic.
Hmmm, you might be able to fit the engine from a GSXR750 in there, that would give you 120+ HP at 12.5K. Now that would be nippy.
I was also thinking a motorcycle engine swap
Imagine putting an h2 engine that would be dope
Do this
Yes this would ofc be awesome, but I do like original engine tuning. I bet you can make this a +100 HP car with the "original" engine (well, swap a lot of parts, and maybe go for really custom things... but keeping block at least) but it would cost more maybe then an motorcycle engine swap though...
But for the ultimate (that would still probably fit) has to be a Hayabusa engine, turboed engine... and it would still at least be all Suzuki! :-)
It's REALLY easy to get 120hp out of these with bolt ons, zero reason to swap them.
The overall project is cool... But I wish the car was benchmarked in stock form to really give us a proper comparison...
@@UwU-pk6nv that's a rather sweeping statement... It's a bit like assuming all mustangs are fast.
So why didnt you add a boost controller ?. Or even a simple bleed valve set to give it an extra 3 or 4psi. That would have taken it over 100bhp.
I know right, or even play with the arm on the wastegate actuator, there's usually some adjustment nuts on it and if you make it tighter it'll open later adding boost
Yeah, was thinking why don't the up the boost a bit?! Got a better Plugs, intake and exhaust now - it's crying out for an adjustable wastegate actuator and a AEM wideband
20 years ago,, I'd have just spaced out the Actuator mounting plate to the turbo with a few washers, or fitted a bleed valve like you said.
@@SHIREDRIFT If you can't control it, extra boost can't be tuned in.
@@nobodynoone2500 they spent half the video TUNING the car. pretty sure they can tune it if they up the boost
I'm really enjoying the journey of this little project car. This should definitely be an ongoing series (money permitting), finding cool little older cars and making them up as track day cars with a goal to beat some sort of bigger brother car :D
I’m very confused, aftermarket ecu and a tune, but no manual boost controller? You could have turned the boost up and easily made 100hp
thats not how 0.9L cars works but ok
@@youpi403 an engine is an engine, whether it's a 0.9 I3, 2.0 I4, 2.5 I5 or 1.3 two rotor Wankel.
@@JakkeJakobsen 🤣
@@JakkeJakobsen yeah, ok boss, you got it.
@@JakkeJakobsen you could put as much boost you want it in this car, youll see no gain. Turbos arent magic
Pretty neat to get 85 HP from a regular tune. Put on a boost controller and you'll see it flying. The KeiSport ECU does nothing more than prepare the engine for more boost, but you have to increase it yourself.
The na mx-5 1.6 had 116hp until 1995. They changed the cams and compression that year bringing down hp but unlocking peak torque earlier.
I was about to say the same thing, aiming for the lowest power MX-5 is a bit of a cheat
It was 1994 actually. When the 1.8 came out at the start of 1994 they kept the 1.6 as a lower priced option (and detuned it to make it less competitive with the 1.8)
Using the detuned 1.6 as the car to beat feels a bit disingenuous to me.
@@MrManBuzz It's a completely pointless quest; "will a heavily modified car beat a completely standard car?". Hardly worth crowing about if it does...
@@derekchapman5167 It'd make some sense if NA MX5s were significantly more expensive than Cappuccinos and it was like 'can you make a Cappuccino faster than an MX5 for less money' but if anything you can still pick up an MX5 cheaper than a Cappuccino.
And let's not talk about the money spent on mods. A well set up turbo MX5 (on stock internals) can give M3s a run for their money.
is that the power at the wheels?
Do you know what I appreciate the most from this channel?
The fact that this channel gives a modern cover to old-school presenting and linking that to the old-school shows. They've got contact with the Trio from TG / TGT and maintain references to those series in their YT Video's. This makes it fun for both new and old viewers, as it's something modern yet reffering to older stuff.
Absolutely keep it up, I love the video's 😁
This turned out to be more fun, than I thought! Not only 85 HP, but useful upgrades and a beautiful shine🙂 I can hardly wait the challenge!
i love the little car, i think its stunning and all the things you can do with the roof is cool, the targa look was brilliant!!!
id like to know, if the suspension bushings have been replaced as well, they could after alls those years also improve the ride quite a bit
Doesn't look like it bu Monstersport do an upgraded bush kit for these cars thats a stiffer rubber. Better than OEM but not as hardash as poly.
That looks utterly fantastic. Great job
Great series! More of this sort of thing please
What a fabulous fun car that is. We need more simple, affordable vehicles like this to enjoy in a world where huge outright speed, and silly horsepower are just getting pointless!!!
Your testing was at the wheel too. Factory figures is usually at the crank.
in this situation factory figures was at the wheels
Really cool cinematography going on.
That's scrubbed up a treat! Love these little things!
Nice, glad to hear that you're having it rewelded, injection of Waxoyl or similar would be wise too✌️👍😊💜
Im lovin these episodes of yuki,
will mod my cappucino on gt7
oh man... that hardtop conversion is rad AF... now I really want one... :D
I could watch you guys mod this car to the gills, I wanna see the stage III version, KEEP GOING!
Boooooost! Give it some boost man!
The factory cutoff is around 16psi but the magic number seems to be 1 bar or 14.7psi.
That's what I run in mine, factory everything except exhaust. Made a huge difference over stock.
It's kinda cool that coil-overs and schmicko brakes are available for these very modest little devices. 😄
Thinking about the sponsor at the end, does anyone else feel like we are getting to a point where there's a paint protectant, for your paint protectant, that's already protecting your paint protectant? Cool video though, excited to see the showdown.
Well, more layers = more protection. I don't think there's an end in sight. There will always be another layer to add on.
That's awesome you're getting up into the 80s without boost control!
I got my KeiSport PNP finally and added a boost controller to bump the boost from 0.7 bar to about 1.1 bar, so once I get mine tuned properly I'm excited to see if I can get mine into the triple digit wheel hp!
What a cool build. Looks really fun!
I'm so eager to see the next episode. When will this battle finally take place?
EngineTuner are awesome. They've tuned a few cars for me. Always been pleased. Shame you didn't hit your target but still awesome. My old cappuccino had epic turbo lag when tuned.
What a sweet tune!!! Awesome job!
This series is sooooo well done! Production value is super high. I've loved every minute of it. Thank you for sharing your kei car adventures!
Intriguing little project, curious to see what you can wring out of it.
The product placement was just, so, subtle! ;)
The new S660s look great. Just like my Brabus Roadster is. In fact mechanically they are almost the same. (Except the Brabus is 699cc and 101bhp as stock and possibly weighs less too).
How… The Smart Roadster doesn’t have independent suspension at the rear to start with, then the SOHC vs the DOHC on Honda and let’s not talk about the gearbox on it… Small and light MR roadsters they are, but let’s not kid ourselves, it’s a far cry from being mechanically similar
Wow, Yuki! This episode was incredibly informative and inspiring.
Wahayyy. Engine tuner. Had 2 cars tuned by them. Both brilliant
bigger turbo is always the answer.
They didn’t even turn the boost up on the stock turbo! Needs a boost controller before a big turbo
@@SKOMPAS the ECU definitely has some form of boost control
There’s no replacement for displacement.
not if you dont have enough exhaust flow/engine size to drive it. plus then you get more lag
@@float32that is false ever since the spooly boys were introduced
Been waiting for this video
saw some videos where one of these had the motor swapped with a Hayabusa turbo, 300+ hp in one of these sounds insane
I had Cappuccino and I managed to get over 100hp by upgrading its turbo and intercooler at Suzuki dealer
Well, at least it was what i did in Gran Turismo 4
The cat back exhaust needs to be turbo back. The stock downpipe is probable way too small. This vintage of Japanese turbo cars typically had pretty low compression ratios - 8ish to 1.
10 to 1 would be more like it. Then you find out the connecting rods can't take all the fun... And so it begins.
loving this!!
These engines can take a lot. The most powerful one on record is a 250PS one from Japan. It has Nissan March SuperTurbo pistons, forged rods, TD05/16 turbo, a custom equal lenght exhaust manifold and a full exhaust. There is nothing noted about head work or intake manifold, but i suppose it may be ported and may have a larger TB, maybe...
In any case, the stock engine as-is can get to around around 130PS for reliable track use. I wouldn't personally go further on stock internals, but a little over 100 is achievable.
But there is also a problem with the stock turbo, it kinda gets limited at around 90PS. You should most definitely get the turbo hybridized with a larger compression wheel, made of billet aluminium so it would spool quicker.
Install a boost controller and also check what might be the problem for the power loss. You can't just throw fuel and timing at it hoping it would fix itself. Check for vacuum leaks, broken gaskets, worn out valve guides, anything that could be suspect for that power loss. Getting around 50PS from a car that barely made 60PS is a huge power loss. Just as you said, it may seem little, but the engine is also tiny, so is most definitely something very wrong with it.
Nice spotto of a Dark metalic blue MY02 WRX "wagon" (hatch) with darkend wrx lights, just like what i had but few dif mods 👌👌
Love those I wish we’d got them here in the states.
The Honda S660 would sell like mad here, we need kei cars in the UK.
Love small cars. This cappuccino is so cool!
Suspension Strut Tower Bar..... after all these mods the rotten body is going to flex around when it goes on track. having no roll cage and keeping the stock look is hard but they do kits for front and rear adjustable strut towers on these lil machines.
Could it, idk, fit a Yaris GR power train? That would be the ultimate pocket roadster rocket
now THATS how you do a sponsor integration!!!
i couldnt look away....
I really need one of these to go along my 92 Swift GTI :)
Not a very nice video, but a very very very nice video. Great work on the wee Suzuki Scottie and the team.
Love the little Suzuki Cappy.
Love your work 👍
The part when he showed the differnt configurations reminds me of the concept of the citroen pluriel… almost 15 years earlier…. And better! Because you can keep the parts in the car!
Nice to hear you went down to Plymouth its nice to see. Plus to hear that janner accent
Love it, so cool!
Rebuild this engine + new turbo? I’d be so curious how far you could come. Supercool car!
Whats the insurance like on one of these for a new driver? Like such a tiny engine being a K class surely shouldn't be too bad right?
Mine had about 150bhp and had nice power until 9500rpm then tapered off until about 11000rpm. Standard turbo and throttle body limit it so much.
Everybody loves an underdog :)
Well done on the outro! No more "If you have been" nonsense. 🙂
Any updates on project Jag lads? I'm so excited to see that project completed. That thing is a weapon.
So crusty underneath, at least get that sorted and replace the bushes before bolting on new parts. Otherwise a nice project.
The Honda S660 looks awesome!
It's hilarious that you'd name a red cappuccino yuki because it means snow in Japanese
Advancing timing is all very well, but in the end, depending on what fuel you can buy in any location, you do sacrifice low end refinement. Maybe not a issue to some, but if daily driving this car through town it can be a pain. My MX5 was the same. Lovely power boost but it became lumpy through town if I wanted max power gain.
Still one of my all time favorite cars! 🤓❤️
All these companies involved are local to me. Small lightweight cars like this are perfectly suited to the narrow roads around here.
same. me too
Shamon ! Bring it on!
You could look into the Indian market. Usually, Japanese manufacturers offer 800cc versions os engines there.
Turning the dizzy using a strobe, i miss them days soooo bad 😪
Running 112hp on my cappuccino and I'm not done yet 😃
Sick👍
❤❤❤ PRODUCTION TEAM 🙏........HAVE A BEAUTIFUL WEEK EVERYONE ✌️
TY 🙏🙏
The fan blowing air into the motor is bigger motor 😂
3:12 when I’m introducing my friends to new people
I’d like to see one of these with a turbo gsxr-1000 engine like a lot of drag racing bikes have.
Do whatever you need and drastically reduce the life of the mini Miata but the Mazda will last as long you can keep the rush off, but after seeing the welding on that capa made me not worry about my mx5 that's on 175k-ish and the same age as yours
Exciting stuff.
The little spool that could.
How did it go with the rust repair so that it can pass the MOT? (Edit: ok so it will be done before the race)
An upgraded intercooler would have helped. I'm assuming it has one from factory.
Something so cute about those high-performance little disc brakes.
Wish I could get a kei car in my country.
What is the chance that the piston arms will bend?
I assume, pedantically speaking, that you've been trailering this little beauty around as it's sans MOT right now! Looking forward to the stand-off!
Don't the trade plates cover that?
is the "Jag-Off" between you, hammond and alex still happening?
I have that same harbor freight timing light lol
I am so sorry, but that final ad for the coating had me in stitches. Mike you kept saying that word & variants of, So "Yuki" has RABIES now! PMSL
There's very little reason to use the Kei Sport ECU if you're not going to use a boost controller. Turning up the boost is the primary use case for that computer and would easily get you up to the 100hp goal.
Would love to get an interior tour of the car and see how tight the fit is for a full size person!
We need those S660's in the USA!!! That little car is awesome!
Just upping boost only helps to a point on these, the tiny stock turbo chokes out. Stock turbo you'll max out at around 80hp even with more boost
Ht07 is the biggest that bolts directly on the stock exhaust manifold, that will net around 115hp!
Didn't you see that they already had 85 hp on the dyno? More than enough to beat a Mark 1 MX-5.
@@Fastvoice yeah mate, but even upping boost to 17psi on the stock turbo you dont gain much peak power from here since you run out of flow/turbo efficiency. Its still in the 80s.
I know this is supposed to be about Yuki, but I got a bit distracted by those Honda S660s. Those look like a lot of fun.
You should take it to Powervalve in St.Helens for a new exhaust! Been a few years since I’ve been to see them but they got some impressive power gains with their custom performance exhaust! Might be able to get it up to 90!
Watch episode 2, they already have a new exhaust
@@keio5274 I have, it’s not a powervalve exhaust though.
@@adsyoffinch the exhaust is fine and not the restrictive part on this setup now. intercooler and lack of boost is whats holding this one back

Amazing series
Always wanted a Cappuccino and put a Hayabussa turbo motor in it 300+hp in that would be scary, but there 20k+ only two available in Aus 25 and 42grand!
Why didn’t you guys turn the boost up even just a little?
You should compare it in power to weight ratio. It already more than a tuned mx5
Considering drivetrain loss I’d say you’re right on the money with 100hp
I had a Cappuccino just over 100hp in Gran Turismo, and that thing was fuuuun!!!
