Why do I love Ed Frawley? No BS advice, not afraid to ruffle feathers, strong opinions that counter mainstream narratives, cranky and SOLID! Few people have balls these days. WTH happened ?!!! I’ve been working with my first working dog for the last 2 years and learning from Ellis, Ed as well as a few others. I can say today, after soooo much work, that I have a solid understanding of how to teach and interact with my dog to create the TOTAL dog, and one I want to live with. 👊
The advice here and in the Leerburg videos for this situation is spot on. I was fortunate enough to find the channel just after I got my 3 month old pup. She was hyper each time we met another dog and she was then fraught when it left -just for the same thing to happen again and again -she was not learning or improving. Everyone said just keep going but it didn't feel right. I found a Michael Ellis YT video explaining some dogs especially shepherd dogs benefit from walks away from distraction while they build a relationship with their owner. I followed this advice and my dog improved engagement level with me. I went on walks where I would only meet one other dog/owner, and could set my dog up to be engaged with me when it passed. I then started going out with my friend and her two dogs (on lead) but not meeting other people or dogs. Ed is right as well for saying be choosy who you take advice from - a lot of people were baffled with the way I was approaching it and thought I was mean not to let the pup meet and greet everyone, but they didn't understand the process behind what I was doing, so I ignored them. My dog can now go for a walk in a fairly busy park without lunging at anything. I can now do basic obedience (sit, down, wait, come, go to place, down from a short distance) in this park when it is fairly busy. She is just over 1y.o. THIS PROCESS WORKS.
I wish this video will be viewed at least 100 times more! Clear, simple, logical.
You’re absolutely correct. I adopted a 3 year old Dachshund almost 2 years ago. It’s taken this long to build a relationship with her and she finally making correct decisions. I don’t allow her to approach or be approached by other dogs. We work together daily but short sessions.
Bravo! Another video filled with solid advise! I lost my beloved GSD as a result of a wounded game tracking incident 4 years ago but this video resonated with me because I had started taking him to a “doggie day care” under the pretense that he would be supervised and with only one or two appropriate dogs at a time.
He slowly became hyper around other dogs and the hyper mode quickly advanced to the aggressive mode as he was a large, strong male that always won the confrontations he was involved in and with each one, as is always the case, the aggression grew. I took him out of this environment and it took me a solid year to be able to track wounded game with him and any other dog because of his aggression and also to safely interact with another dog.
I will NEVER take another dog to ANY place with a group of dogs again. You cannot predict what will happen if you’re not there and unfortunately you can’t predict what someone else’s dog will do even if you are there and it’s a heck of a price to pay to have to undo a learned behavior like this.
*Yes... and often at dog parks it is almost always the wrong OWNERS showing up.* Yaking on the phone, texting, and usually CLUELESS about dog psychology. A nightmare waiting to happen. Most of the time, normal dogs can work it out between themselves when they are off leash. But often the owners do everything wrong. Yelling, screaming and not giving the dog confident guidance and calm CALM energy.Your dog bite pictures/stories are fabulously frightening and everyone should see them. Especially the wimpy, weak dog owners who think you can train a dog ONLY with treats and praise. Today, there are almost as many medicated, neurotic dogs as there are medicated neurotic owners.
Off topic. I just cleaned out my car today and realized I had a plethora of quality, *twenty-plus year-old Leerburg products* just in my car. Everything is still in great condition. Your leashes, collars and toys are the BEST money can buy. Anywhere! *People need to start liking, commenting and sharing your videos. My dog will act aggressively towards the occasional dog when on the leash. I am not sure how to anticipate and extinguish this behaviour. Should I muzzle him ? I am disabled and use a Walker at all times. I think he is being protective. We walk in the park daily with him off lead and he meets many different dogs and he ignores them . I worry about him getting into a fightThank you for answering this in the video.I will Ask Cindy!!

You need to be of more value to your dog. Start with house doors. When the dog pulls to go ahead, you calmly turn around and wait for the dog to get the picture: I pull, I don't get anywhere.
