Groundhog Day 2024: Wiarton Willie predicts early spring for Canada

- On Friday, Wiarton Willie, Ontario's famed groundhog, was carried out onto the stage at Wiarton Arena, to decide the fate of winter for Canadians.
South Bruce Mayor Jay Kirkland, who can speak Groundhogese, had a quick word with Wiarton Willie as the groundhog told the local politician whether he saw his shadow or not.
If Wiarton Willie saw his shadow, then we would experience six weeks more of winter. If the little rodent does not see his shadow, then Ontario would see an early spring.
After speaking with Willie, the mayor told the gathered crowd, “no shadow. Which means early spring!”

We didn't even have winter. I've worn my actual winter coat like 5 times this year in Toronto.
We had about 3 snow days in Vancouver and some -20 days, I broke out my Ontario winter coat more here than I did when visiting back “home” in Ontario

Same, I've been wearing my light winter coat or just a hoodie, for most of the winter.
The heavier winter coat only went on a handful of times.

Yes - the Wiarton Willie Festival is a big deal up here at the Bruce Peninsula. Lots of activities held on the day for the community and it has been celebrated for years and years! :-)

Well we don't even have winter up here anymore so not that surprising...it only snowed somewhat heavily maybe twice. It's actually scary.
Not that scary when you look at history. Weather patterns often last hundreds, even thousands of years and sometimes millions of years.
These milder Winters could be here for many generations to come, just as they have in the distant past for specific periods of time.
Not all that concerning. World food production across the board is at all time highs, Africa's population has grown 6 fold since 1950, there's no climate crisis, and if there were, food production would be in the dumpster and Africa's population would have fallen, not risen.

this is a tradition. People had hard times in winter in those years this far north. The hope of an early spring, even if 'predicted' by a groundhog, was meaningful.
It was a way to boost morale amongst the population, now in easier times you see it as meaningless.
