  • The popular restaurant chain Red Lobster is in the red, and could soon file for bankruptcy protection.
On Monday, the Florida-based company shuttered dozens of its locations, including here in San Diego.
The Red Lobster in Mira Mesa is one of up to 120 location closures throughout the nation. A restaurant supply liquidator plans to auction off their kitchen equipment.
While there are still a couple of other Red Lobsters here in San Diego County still open. What their future holds is uncertain.

Another casualty of private equity. They'd still be in business if they never were bought out in 2014.
_Golden Gate, which bought the chain for $2.1 billion in 2014. At that time, virtually all of the real estate under Red Lobster restaurants was owned by the chain, which has no franchisees._
_Golden Gate, a private-equity firm, then sold the real estate for $1.6 billion to American Realty Capital Partners, which changed its name and reformed as Vereit this July. The properties were leased back to Golden Gate._

The reporter says that one of the problems could be the all you can eat shrimp which he makes it sound like started last year. I have not been to a Red lobster in years and even then they had the all you can eat shrimp. We can blame the economy because food has had the highest inflation rate of all the things affected by inflation and the fact that covid shut down the businesses for over a year. I would guess there are many hundreds of businesses that are on the edge of going bankrupt because of the government policies. One of the people interviewed blamed the Thai company for not being very good at investment when it is likely that they could see the writing on the wall and there was no way to recoup the losses with the current government. The government must be included in the equation.

Private equity as noted above is mostly to blame in this case and many others. They always use "inflation", or the "pandemic", or "9/11" or something else to assign blame. Asset strippers come in, strip the best parts of the company, load it up with debt then take the money and run. This leaves the stripped company holding the bag. This practice should be outlawed.
