Hahaha….well the joke has been on me for about 50 years. A Vietnam vet (69/70), I got the standard issue plastic razors. I just didn’t know any better. Once in a blue moon I got a straight razor barber shave from a base barber (wow was that fantastic), but for the most part it’s been that plastic, multi blade crap ever since. Thanks to you and a few other CZcamsrs, I’m now deep into the safety razor groove and am loving it. The results remind me of those barber shaves I got back in the day. Trying lots of razor and blade combos and learning proper techniques. Thanks amigo.

I get the impression that the razor companies want it to appear like using their latest razor handle and blade configuration makes you a part of the in crowd. And using anything but their latest and greatest leaves you old hat and all washed up. Two words: Sales Pressure.
      Two better words: safety razor.

Double edge safety razors do often clog for me. I have two or three ways to try to manage this recurring problem: Wash the skin and hair before doing the shave; make the lather using soft water; try to make a wetter lather. Even all this, not always perfect.

I agree with the fear of safety razors 100%! I just switched to a safety razor this year and bought a Henson for myself after searching for the perfect razor for beginners. When I loaded up a razor for the first time and wanted to start shaving (after watching probably 3-4 different tutorials on youtube) I was shaking a little bit and I could not figure out why I was so scared. I'm hooked now and will never go back and love discovering all kinds of new brands, soaps, brushes, etc.

I went from disposables (because of military service), after that I used a 34C for years, then moved to 3/8 + 5/8 straights, later weekdays 34C and straights for weekends, then about 15yrs of not shaving. Now I am back to DE (my eyesight is a problem for straights now) and have settled on a Fatip Piccolo OC, a Rockwell 6S and if anything else needs a razor there is a Mühle Companion in reserve.
For blades I have Feather, BIC, Treet Carbons and some mild blades of unknown origin that sit between the Treet and Feathers for sharpness. With those I pretty much have all possibilities covered.
I won't go into soaps, pre-shaves etc. etc.
The reason I returned to DE was that no matter what I tried I kept getting dry flaky skin under the beard in specific places and the only effective treatment for me was a daily close shave.
Right now I probably have enough stuff here to last two years...

What you want to know about using Gillette Fusion Five cartridges, is clean the heads well after each shave. dry it, and apply a lubricant to the blades. You SHOULD be able to do more than 10 shaves per cartridge, but not too many more. The limit I recorded for my uses was 17 shaves on a cartridge. I no longer prefer to take it that far.

Not only am I done with the cartridge scam, I am done with spending ridiculous amounts of money on ANY shaving gear. I probably have enough artisan soaps to last me a lifetime and also blades. For soaps I am just going to use one, good old Stirling Soap Beeswax unscented. It lasts forever, is cheap, has a great lather, and has ZERO scent. I almost regret buying so many soaps now. Video seemed to cut off unexpectedly? I have two shaves in with a safety razor and my mind has been so blown. 40yo and feel lied to by the industry!! I never liked cartridges but figured it was the only way to shave aside from a straight blade like the barber uses but didn't want to learn that. Always had issues with irritation until I found the Gillette SkinGuard cartridges which worked well for me the last two years or so but have the same problem of being expensive and just good enough. Felt like after the second shave they were clearly wearing out. If that was the cost so be it but it was not like it was a great experience to begin with, just good enough which was frustrating. Now that the King Gillette razor got me in the door, I cant wait for my Syntesi Velvet to arrive. I am split on what blades to get next. This week I plan on getting the right soap and brush as I have still been using the same Barbasol Original I have been using for years. It reminds me of my grandfather who passed years ago so that part will be a bummer to say bye to. So while I basically stopped shaving regularly some years ago, only using my trimmers to keep things in control, shaving for client facing days, I am excited to now be able to shave 2-3 times a week. My wife loved my shave days too so she will be happy about that as well.

True. You can. How is about $15 for Lil' Brudder, a synthetic bristled brush from Stirling Soaps? You could find cheaper brushes if you look into some of the other online merchants.

Now you've gone and done it...time for me to think about my starting costs:
The first razor I got cost 75
Soap I got (got my Shannons this weekend and used it first today...holy beep is that stuff good), I'd say the average is 15
Blades I like cost 13 for 200 (Treet Platnium is turning into my go to), but say 15 for 100 as an average
    Brush - 20-30 bucks
Alum - 12 (think that's the parker price for the big one)
    Thayers - 11
Good post shave balm/after shave: 6-10 bucks
My start was 170. I'd say a solid average to get everything to go and last a year probably around 150.
The one thing to consider adding for future videos on the topic, after the first year:
Blades...10-20 dollars depending on use per blade
Soap: 15 maybe 30 bucks if you have use a 2nd soap.
    Thayers: 11
    Alum Block: 12
48-73 is much less than 150...if you don't dive down the rabbit hole first (good call out on that at the end).

@@OhioShaves It was a Henson AL...my bank nailed me with an outrageous international fee which brought it up to 75.

Not need to spend all that to get started. Just looking at soap and razor, a person could try Pear's Transparent Soap (~ $1.30 from Dollar Tree), and some Van Der Hagen razor (many drug stores, less than $20).

@@10floz30minutesIf I was recommending to a friend I'd recommend a King C Gillette or Parker 78r (The 2nd razor I ever bought) to start. None of the wet shaving products are in the dollar tree here which made it frustrating to hear about them on other channels, going to the local dollar trees and not seeing them there.
Your point is perfectly valid though that one can get a good reliable razor/pack of blades/dependable soap/brush/alum for shave feedback and be at the cost I spend on the Henson.

@@10floz30minutesApologies if this comment duplicates, tried replying in my notifications and not sure it took.
If I was to recommend to a friend a razor to start it'd either be the King C Gillette or Parker 78R (the 2nd razor I bought and is the one in my travel kit). I've checked the dollar trees around me and none of them have the wet shaving products mentioned on the various channels.
Your point is perfectly valid that for the cost I paid for the Henson one could get a razor/blades/soap/brush/alum and be set for a long time. While I get some of those aren't necessary that's what I recommend to the friends who ask me.

    Well…..you don’t have to buy more 😂😂😂
Most of us safety razor folks spend more than I would have staying with Harry’s! And I never had razor burn. So I don’t think you can generalize this.

I did the same thing at first. But then I've bought a separate DE razor for armpits(Gillette King C for like 11$ with a good discount). Now issues with occasional irritation and ingrown hairs are gone.
