Hard-drinking, ex-minor-league hopeful Morris Buttermaker (Walter Matthau) grumpily agrees to coach a Little League team at the behest of lawyer-councilman Bob Whitewood (Ben Piazza), who has a vendetta against the league for excluding his marginally talented son from play. After failing with his new team of misfits, Buttermaker enlists feisty and gifted pitcher Amanda Whurlitzer (Tatum O'Neal) to lead the charge -- but can he find the luck and patience to whip these outcasts into shape?
I was 12 when this movie came out, and played baseball. Kelly Leak was the coolest kid we'd ever seen.
I was only 10 but we also thought he was cool as Kelly Leak but what a turn when he was Moocher in Breaking Away.

Kelly Leak was one of the greatest character portrayals ever written into a movie.
After his career in Little League Baseball and gambling at the Arcade, Kelly Leak became the masked vigilante, Rorschach.

The last flick I saw him play in was " Little Children " with Kate Winslet. He played the character of this messed up guy who still lived with his older mom.
He also spent a summer in Indiana cliff diving into a rock quarry lake with a bunch of other guys, one of whom was a bike racer in Breaking Away a wonderful little movie many people never saw it's great with Dennis Quaid.

"Es un bandito!" It also cracks me up how a 12-year old can play a grown man in an air hockey game for money while smoking a cigarette and it's perfectly normal.

Facts I was "Kelly Leak" of my small town Cigarettes and all didn't give a damn. I played a Hella left field I remember my third grade teacher saying then I looked and act like kelly leak Damn those were the days
I miss the pinball halls - that special sound of the the 1960's and 70's electro-mechanical pinball machines.
Same I was 8 yrs old when this movie came out.
I worked at those arcades in the late 70's early 80's. What a magical time.

JEH’s return as a seasoned, excellent character actor was one of the best comeback stories of the last twenty years.
Everytime I see him I remember seeing him in this movie when I was a kid.

Jackie Earle Haley was seriously athletic. He especially had a wicked throwing ability, and deadly accurate. As he displayed in a movie he did after this one: Damnation Alley.
Tatum O'Neal was sorely missed in the sequel.
When she gets into the car, it reminds me of Paper Moon.

Kelly was a pretty good-looking kid but then you see him bad news bears part 3 he looked mad haggard and burnt out. Hard to believe this is Rorschach and the new Freddy Krueger
Young actors should learn from Jackie Earle Haley. He knew his days as a teen idol were short, so he reinvented himself as a character actor.

Kelly Leak was my favourite character because I was like that when I was a kid , cocky as hell didn't take shit from no one and did what ever I wanted and would go through hell to get the upper hand. I am still like that to this day

Stones tickets were $24 back then! And scalped for $80! I know, I scalped a pair so I could go see Johnny/Edgar WInter instead (for $10 and deaf ears afterward) and have $$$ left over for "recreational use". I was 13, and in love with Tatum like every other kid back then who saw this movie and wished they had a g/f like her ;)

Barely 15 YRS. Teens nowadays start smoking when they're 13.
@@fjoelprice There was no age limit to smoking back then. Teenagers could easily buy cigarettes. I used to by cigs for my mother back then.
@@jaycee330 Back in the eighties there was an age limit, but no one cared. My pop sent me buying his cigarettes for him when I was in elementary school. Sometimes I got some spare change for the errand. Also sent me to fetch beer from the corner shop while he stopped the car on the other side of the road with the motor running. If you were a known customer, you could send your kids to collect stuff. It may not have been legal but it was customary.
There were cig machines everywhere back then, too.

Tatum O'Neal was the best child actress of the 70s, bar none. Jodie Foster was good. Kristy McNicholl was good. Tatum blew them out of the water. She was just better.
