Spandau Ballet are one of Britain’s great iconic bands having sold over 25 million records, scored numerous multi-platinum albums and amassed 23 hit singles across the globe since their humble beginnings as a group of friends with dreams of stardom in the late 1970s. It wasn’t long before they became fully-fledged members of the iconic Blitz Club scene and established themselves as one of the super-groups of the 80s.
The band's classic line-up features brothers Gary and Martin Kemp on guitars, vocalist Tony Hadley, saxophonist Steve Norman and drummer John Keeble.
Spandau Ballet’s hits include Gold, True, To Cut A Long Story Short, Through The Barricades and many more.

Lyrics:
Soldier is turning
See him through white light
Running from strangers
See you in the valley
War upon war
Heat upon heat
To cut a long story short
I lost my mind
Sitting on a park bench
Years away from fighting
To cut a long story short
I lost my mind
Standing in the dark
Oh I was waiting for man to come
I am beautiful and clean
And so very very young
To be standing in the street
To be taken by someone

What a voice Tony Hadley has ..... Easily one of the best vocalists in the 80's and beyond
Totally.
Absolutely 😍
Dave Vanian from The Damned was good too
Yah
It was his voice that always put me off Spandau. He has the flattest vocal style I’ve ever heard!
My heart aches with sadness when I listen to 80s music, there is nothing like them these days. Time is flying by and I feel lucky I was an 80's girl.
Aye, favourite era tbf.✌
Respect to you Annie
Our 80's was the last decade where music was REALLY so Alive
100%
Felicidades Annie, eres afortunada como yo, como tantas chicas y chicos que vivimos aquellos años como jóvenes incipientes abriéndose camino en la vida.
Saludos😊
Tony Hadley definitely has a great voice. Someone I know knows him and said he's a really nice friendly down to earth guy.
Hard to believe it's 44 years ago this year, this was released.
truly incredible, different era
Bought the 7-inch single lol 😂 😂 with my pocket money, I was 14 lol 😂 😂
The 80s were Brilliant 👍🏴
Best song they ever did . 19 then 60 now. Jesus time sure does fly. Make it count people.
Yes a time machine would be good to go back
Chant no. 1 memories
Well said Liam , I fully agree 👍👏 make every day of being young count...
I'm about to turn 50. Kids listen to this man!!! Great song but where did the time go. It was the late 90's a couple of years ago 🙂Feels like that sometimes. Have a great 2022 and beyond.
I am 64 and still liking this in 2022
People used to mock the 80’s now you look back and realise they were bloody geniuses compared to today
Yup, even some of the songs we didn't care for back then have turned out to be examples of skilled songwriting, singing, and instrumental performance.
@@michaelalderete9622 exactly.
well said
he is crap now🤮
If I had a time machine I’d go straight there.
Tony Hadley, surely one of the finest male singers of his generation.
This is why the 1980s were different from the decades before.
Ouf, look at Martin Kemp! And Tony was just beautiful back in the day - I once saw him close-up in London and he was SO tall and gorgeous.
I'm SO jealous.
Tony Hadley is such a classic epic vocalist. Less is more. Guy could demolish brick walls with his voice, but his voice was part of the songs, and he knew what was needed. We love you Tony, very much so
Tony voice really crushes it here. Almost like the power of Steve Jones power chords in The Sex Pistols. In retrospect, many of Gary Kemp's songs were pretty average and without Tony's voice, they would be forgetful. Duran's Planet Earth and Ordinary World (lots of credit to Warren) were crackers of songs.
Spandau's songs were okay by comparison. It is like a fairly crappy movie but you throw Gary Oldman or Tom Hardy in it and it is good. Tony did that for Spandau. Steve's sax playing also helped.
One of their reunion new songs, Once More, that Steve wrote with I think Gary was one of their better songs. And again, Tony makes it great a great song. Hat tip here to John Keeble's drumming on this song and Martin's bass line.
I don't care!! Tony Hadley is HOT 🔥🔥🔥 AF! He's a classic Debonair. Such class & taste! And his strong Baritone voice. What a Man 💋💋💋
We need the bars and clubs and vibe of 80s all back !
……be stacked out I’m sure
🇬🇧🆘🇬🇧
Came across this song on one of my dad’s 80s cd’s and played it on repeat all day. Absolute gem of a tune!!
I love the Scottish garb in the video
This track was their best, hands down.
One of them. I really liked instinction, and for some reason Highly Strung. Im a keys player, and we play this in my 80s band.... right before Planet Earth and after Tainted Love..
great song 👍
I loved it back then and it still stands out, but it's not Blue Monday material to be honest.
Personally, I have Lifeline (or maybe Chant #1) as my favorite(s).
@@mortisxx5712 Stanglers golden brown, the Smith's how soon is now, bruce Springsteen dancing in the dark are my favs
Nope.
To cut a long story short, I love this band. 😁👍🇭🇲🇬🇧
So many songs I listen to now that were made before I was born. Was playing this on the computer at my parents house and I turned around to see mum and dad dancing - Mum holding a glass of wine in the air and dad dancing not worrying about the arthritis 😂
The Synth riff for this song is addictive and energetic.
It's the synth and bass playing together and entwined, not just the synth.
yup
👍🏻it is very good
@@wbertie2604 Totally agree, it's the combination of the 2 then add the drum break and it's clearly their most creative track.
So true
The 80's are still the best decade in my opion, such great bands!!!, all had their individual looks and sounds
An eternal Anthem of the early 80's New Romantic wave : Spandau Ballet with other bands like Duran Duran, Japan, Visage, Ultravox, Landscape, the Human League, all inspired by Kraftwerk, David Bowie and Roxy Music, a short but a great and glittering musical period !
A stunning list Stiofan.... its so easy to win the best decade for music debate if on the 80s team
You're absolutely right Stiofan. I think exactly the same.
Maybe a time machine will do the trick what do you reckon? Such a different world then to dance to music like this. Wishful thinking. Aug 2020 ❤eighties forever ❤😎😎👋👋👍👍
@@paulcrisp9861 yes.fantastic 80s.from italy.i was born in 80
@Star of Europa living in east coast uk nice to know you appreciate good music as it was then. 😎😎👍👍😎😎👋👋
They were ALL soo handsome! 💖
I was born in '85, and thanks to my somewhat older husband, I'm a little bit more familiar with this genre than most my age, but not much from Spandau Ballet. We have a gas station by our house that consistently plays good music and I heard this while getting gas recently, recognized the voice but couldn't place the artist, so had to look it up, and have had it on repeat all week. Great song.
So I was 7 .
I first heard this on my 16th birthday. It was November 1980 I'm sure. My mates parents were taking us out to celebrate at a local golf club and it played on the car radio of a white MK2 Cortina. Little did we know it was the beginning of a truly wonderful decade of music and fashion. How I miss the 80s. Great memories ❤
I passed the site of the Blitz club today in Great Queen Street, there is a plaque on the wall that says Spandau played their first on 5th Dec 1979.
This song is so edgy and the epitome of New Romantic style. Doesn't get any better.
The clothes, the hair, the sound, a time capsule of early 80s music in one awesome song.
uh...and the dancing!!!
I loved it so much and fancied all of them teenaged life in the 80's💞💞💞💞
@ Tom - What dancing?
The girls at the end?
Yeah, I liked that part too
They kind of brought to mind the Blitz Kids in Duran Duran's 'Planet Earth's video.
agree
So perfectly put, This was an awesome record at the time
Met Tony Hadley at Gatwick a couple of months ago. What a complete gent, posed for a selfie. Really nice bloke
Tony get back in the band !!!! You are the voice of Spandau !!!
No group had a sound quite like this. ABC, Pet Shop etc. had similarities and I like them too, but Spandau Ballet paid extra attention to the instrumentation and transitions.
Duran Duran were quite similar. Both had a similar sound, with the New Romantic look. They were hugely influenced by 70s/early 80s Roxy music as well.
They're great too, although a bit more on the rebel side, and less focus on classical format.
Wow!! What a huge difference to the song “True.” I never heard this till now and I’m impressed! The song really captures the new wave era!! Love this! I’m in America and I found out it couldn’t make the charts here which is unfortunate but I’m glad I got hear it now, on repeat for awhile!!❤
Check out Chant No 1 and Musclebound, they were my top three faves when I was a little girl, and I still play it when driving long distances or cleaning
I just stumbled upon this forgotten gem, I actually had this riff stuck in my brain for decades, never knowing who it was, it could have been Heaven 17 or Blancmange, or any of those early 80's bands.... saw "Spandau Ballet" and my jaw hit the ground.
@@mushumushushoe - "Chant No. 1" for sure but just about anything before "True".
Through the Barricades is their most epic song.
Always love the way this group dressed, fashionable and a tartan touch to make it stylish.
My God...I thought I would never find this song ever again! I heard it back in the good old days in Southern California, "Rodney On The ROQ", KROQ 106.7 F.M. but never knew who it was! Now I finally know. I can rest and enjoy!!
Is it just me or has this song/video aged really well? I had not clue it was made in 1980! Love the music, the hair, the outfits. Great stuff.
It's you
@@mattiemclean9882 rhetorical question. 😆
The video, yeah, the fashion, not so much.
They look amazing..
And they fully transcend time...
This aged terribly lmao it’s the most 80s thing ever
The best Spandau Ballet song ever!!!! The 80's rule!!!!
one of them..... Instinction was good, and for some reason I really like Highly Strung.
TRUE
@@Dunlaoghairepunkers which “True”? The song “True” or the other true? Either way, True was their biggest hit for a reason but this one is good too
I was a Duran Duran fan, so in the 'enemy camp' so to speak, but I salute this, the Span's finest moment.
Underrated
Yes,I didn't even know they did this, and I also forgot the song, perhaps the 80s wasn't so bad?
An absolute gem to be discovered by future generations, long after we're all gone.
Forget future generations. I grew up in the 80s and hadn't heard this song until today. Of course, I was also still too young in 1980 and this song wasn't a hit in the US.
It was a Hit for me
Definitely should have got more radio play
Remember when I first heard this tune & could feel change was coming in the 1980s!
Yes
@patsypatti990 Much thanks Patsy
2020.
To cut a long story short Spandau Ballet will never be the same without Tony Hadley.
Absolutely true!
@@raimundperz9828 Pure GOLD
Hi Tony :) :)
Any of their Songs, Tony Hadley is Spandau Ballet....)
Watch it they'll send the Kray brothers around
I was a “punk” in the late 70’s .. I was also a rocker in the 60’s I found the 2 very similar in attitude.. so I guess I was always a rebel. It was kinda fun to see people’s reaction to my red Mohawk studded belt & leather jeans, had a few tattoos all in good fun.. in Australia they rejuvenated the pub rock scene burying that disco crap.. I’m 72 now & here rocking on.
Many years ago I bought a sort of best-off synthpop album. This song was also in the list. The Cure, Animation, John Foxx, Soft Cell any many others. Then I rediscovered Spandau ballet. What a special music. The music of the 80's... brilliant.
The UK had their brilliant syntpop-bands. Italy had their Italo Disco bands and Germany had europop/German-pop.
Greetings from Belgium
I still dig into Spotify for music from this time. The songs really take me to a comfort zone.
For all their shortcomings, Spand knew how to have fun, and how to be beautiful. Gratuitous wielding of binoculars earns maximum glamour points.
For me one of their very best songs it blew my mind when I first heard it way back in 1980
My best friend and I use to dance to this like the 2 girls in the clip. The music of the 80's was awesome and the different genres that came from all the main bands was just great. I love the 80's and those were the best years of my life. I was a New Romantic, bordering on a Goth and a little Culture Club but Spandau Ballet were pure smoothness with a touch of classiness...
The two girls dancing in this video are my dear friends and we watched it this weekend after many years ..Anne the blond said I taught her those moves.. I don’t remember!!
These dudes are just outright COOL
So this went to #5 on the British charts. American radio withheld a lot from us, we didn't get to hear this. Reminds me of Human League, which we did get.
To cut a long story short, I am 48 and listen back with such excited enthusiasm 😀👍🏻😀👍🏻😀👍🏻 Tony Hadley forever

So camp so lovely mwah. Cracking melody.
And to think, we now have Roman presenting gameshows on tv. "Life is soo short and if you don't open your eyes and look around once in a while you could miss it", Ferris Bueller!!! 👍
Songs like "True" and "Gold" were both decent in my opinion, But this, My favorite song from them, most definitely.
I like this, but I discovered them with " Freestylers ", " In love with you " is one of my favourite :)
Calate
BetterSkatez / DepecheModeFan1999 [III] sorry , got to disagree. Through the the barricades is gut renching
I absolutely love the synth riff on this one.
This punk rock synth 2021
Every beat of the song is testament to the 80s, synth drum beats and perculated guitar. This is the epitome of what that era was all about. I love this song as it was the soundtrack to my age group.
perculated guitar, perculated hair style, perculated film score.
I remember this, one of my Spandau Ballet faves!
I thought they were a Scottish band wearing all that tartan and kilts 😂
In the Era of The New Romantics !
In 1980 it felt like there was a lull or a calm before the storm... Especially in the UK... The music from a lot of other acts that had been around for years was still good.. But for the exception of Ultravox or OMD... It was like the 80s had yet to start... Then in cold Winter of 1980 these guys came along and literally overnight every thing change... I know it sounds corny but this song was a game changer.. By the end of 1981...the music scene was so different... Duran Duran.. Adam and the Ants... Human League... Depeche Mode... Soft cell...Toyah.. Haircut 100..ABC...Suddenly the 80s went into over drive... It was new and fresh... It wasn't the 60s but all these bands were really competitive... We were spoilt.... Glad I was around to see it the 1st time round... Top of the pops each week was great... This song is not the best. Today that song would be number 1 for months as everything else is dire..but I do turn it up loud when I hear it...... This was a sign of the future of 80s things to come...
Imagine being in a nightclub when this first came out
I don't have to, I was there😊 xx
All time favorite Spandau Ballet song! 👌🏽🔥🔥🔥
FANTASTIC SONG!!!! Brings me back my teenage memories. Love Spandau Ballet ❤❤❤
What a baseline! What a band! What a voice. LEGENDS.
New Romantics era of music. What a voice Tony Hadley
Their first hit of course in 1980, and for sure one of their best. Like much of their work, still as great now then. Spandau Ballet were alright really up until their Parade album in 1984 I feel. After that they sort of went downhill in 1986 or so onwards, with Through The Barricades-which was not nearly as good really though. Thank you anyway!
Journeys to Glory was Spandau Ballet 🙌🙌
What a brilliant voice.
he sounds like he's trying too hard to sound like Ian Curtis.
Hony Tadley
Lonnie Booth ah yes Mr Hadley, great voice still I believe
emma duncan can’t hear that at all 🤷🏻♀️
That last note he hits... _damn,_ Tony. 💕
Saw Tony Hadley on his last tour. Brilliant. He can put a band together and still sound like Spandau Ballet. Without Hadley’s voice however, Gary Kemp can never again sound like Spandau Ballet.
And this was their first ever single' To Cut a Long Story Short' it's my favourite. I always preferred the music of Spandau Ballet over Duran Duran. Yes, the music of the 80's was special. A great decade to be a teenage to be blessed with all that great music.
This is definitely a candidate for a playlist of "Their debut single was their best single".
EASILY their best song!
+Steven A fuck NO
+Steven A NO ! it's "Chant No.1" ;-)

+Martynn 1969 - agreed!
+Arch Stanton Chant #1 was just the best thing they ever did, this comes a close second.
NEW ROMANTIC ERA GREAT BANDS,SPANDAU BALLET, DURAN DURAN, CLASSIX NOUVEAUX, GREAT TIME!
Popular music needs more tartan shawls and binocular accessories, and it needs them now.
Saw them in concert at Universal Amphitheater back in the early 80’s 🩵
This is the music of me, Colin and Andy hanging out and taking it easy at school. We’re all 53 now and still distant friends. Loved the eighties 😀👍🏻
I know, I'm 50 now and I miss these times. Brilliant music.
MEMORIES, MEMORIES....THANK GOD I EXPERIENCED THE 80'S.....SUCH WAY ABOVE AVERAGE INFACT GENIUIS MUSIC.....

I'm always fascinated that he sounds quite posh when he sings! U can't hear his accent at all, not that it's not sexy in it's own way.......
Baritone
baritone range, but his highest notes sound so powerful
Brilliant loved it 💗
Brilliant tune 🤠
What a voice by Tony Hadley... booming and powerful. I miss the 80's 😢❤
Punk was all about dressing down. The New Romantics were all about dressing UP. I am blessed to have experienced both first hand.
Classic!!!!
Magnificent new romantic epic. 1980,punk and post punk was dead, then along came the spandaus, the world was saved.
I was 15 when this was released , and I thoroughly lived and enjoyed the 80’s.

A very Happy 62nd Birthday Tony Hadley. June 2, 1960 Islington, London.
Your voice is so incredibly powerful, yet so smooth and calming..
Many more Anthony Patrick Hadley ...

At work the other day a colleague of mine (aged in his early thirties) mused that Spandau Ballet were the eighties equivalent of .. Ahem... Peter Andre! Whilst not a massive fan of Spandau, I explained to him the merits of songwriting, musicianship and technical ability, (all of which Andre lacks), and politely invited him to fuck off. Peace x
Mate you were politer than I would have been! WTF! Peter Andre...always suspicious of people who have a second name which is also a first name...! Lol! Good on you!
A second name which is also a first name.... like Steve Norman?
@Vee Kee Why wouldn't it?
It's called banter, we don't all work in sterile PC jobs y'know! 😉
GOLD!
Lol, Peter Andre! He had just one big (bad) hit back in the 90s. He even didn't sell a quarter of the records that the Spandau sold all over the world. I really doubt that outside UK many people know who Peter Andre is. If the comparison was with someone like the Take That then I could maybe understand (Spandau are way superior than the Take That both as musicians and song writers) but Peter Andre? Really? 🤔
what a blaster of a song!
IMO Spandau Ballet's greatest song. FIGHT ME!! 😂
Steve Norman is very talented, he started off playing guitar, then percussion, then saxophone and occasionally plays keyboards and sings backing vocals. ✌️😙
I met Tony Hadley at a dinner party in Spain and had a barbecue. One of the best memories I have!
In Spain..?? What City?
Sounds great
Early 80's hits is what reconnects me the most with the decade. This song is like a time portal. Priceless.
Time portal , yes ! Well said .

How did I miss this growing up? I love Spandau Ballet. This album came out before the first one I had. This song is hands down my favorite. So glad Spotify threw in my playlist.
Great song, so dark and goth like, great style, really new wave, so cool, and already such a great voice Mr. Hadley. What a fab talent though still so young.
Good God, a Spandau Ballet song I like!
