It's a miracle it did survive considering the embargo (which still stands), the 'bay of pigs' invasion, and the near constant attempts on Castro's life.
With all that going on Cuba still managed to dramatically improve the health and literacy on the island with universal healthcare and education available to all.

Under Fidel they actually had a government of the people not rich elites and slave plantations . He greatly improved healthcare, education housing conditions for the average person despite the 70 years of oppressive US sanctions.
